Very entertaining series - sad to think this was so many years ago and these guys have aged that much and some passed on since this was done. Very nice that a bunch of these stories have been imortalized in the videos. I am sure some later and current Nascar personalities could tell some good stories and have fun too - but pretty sure they couldn't top these old legends! Most of these guys weren't just drivers, a lot were crack mechanics that knew how everything on the car worked. Stuff like this is a lost art in the big leagues today. Can't blame the drivers, it has just become too complex and hi-tech, amazing stories anyway!
The Ned Jarrett story at the end was the best. This is a great series, any racing fan not just NASCAR fans would have a great respect for this form of racing after watching this!
so glad you uploaded this , sadly so many of these greats are gone now...I love stock car auto racing but I much prefer listening to these guys and watching old races on RUclips than watching the current season races every sunday.. Sad commentary on the current state of the sport
I wish I had a chance to speak with buddy Baker,my dad Zane Watson use to race when Daytona was half beach and half A1A but I have a picture of my dad and buddy Baker standing by a race car,but my dad passed away when I was 8 so I missed out on learning a lot about his history and things he done
Listen to the part of this at the beginning of the video were Darrell Waltrip is talking about the spoilers and too much horsepower if you know anything about NASCAR you'd know that he is exactly one hundred percent right
Nobody can eat like Dave Marcus! He can pack it away I’ve seen it! Lol! I sure do miss these guys! Great bunch! And Little Bud Moore was a riot! Funny guy!
This is the greatest. This is the NASCAR that I feel in love with and made me a fan. These guys are so real and you could relate to them. This WOKE BS racing they do now is horrible. Hard to believe that 2 generations of France's built it and only took 1 to destroy it. Hell Daytona and Talladega was not even 1/4 full.
You have to be functioning in the real world when you're growing up, like these guys did, in order to develop a personality - not staring at a screen all the time, lost in pretend land, like the last few generations...
22:35 Amen! Spot on point that is even more relevant today! Daytona & Talladega are performance capped tracks, you just need to endure until 10 to go and hope you survive the final wreck that will happen. Nobody can do anything before that anyway to get an edge to win.
Im 25 i would love to learn from these guys and uts 2019. Drivers today all the same. These guys drove real stock car. Just with a roll cage welded in. Stock seat stock. Everything bt running gear. And such
It’s interesting. This is a time when drivers didn’t know anything about dirty air. Because in theory what Darrell said would work. But dirty air kills it
In our dirt track late models a legal motor is making 850 to 900 hp but most of ours over a 1000 hp,but our gears and transmissions are made for fast short bursts,I figured NASCAR was making twice as much hp
@@dylanwatson1287 the show was taped in Nashville. Cale flew in from Timmonsville, Junior said Cale's plane was faster than riding home with Ned Jarrett. Poor ol Ned had to drive home alone.
The show was actually in Daytona during speedweeks in 98. Cale and Junior was still involved with racing. Both owned cars. I was surprised to see Darrell still there. You can here testing going on in the back ground while they are telling stories.
The greatest thing about half these racers is the fact they put so much into things that required them to WIN just to break even. They all managed to come out on top.
Amen Dave Marcis! They never talk about cubic inches at Teladaga (and other super speedways. Daytona. Indy.)! All these NASCAR engines are custom made. Every one! Why can’t NASCAR simply say super speedway engines are restricted to, say, 300 inches, or 265 inches, and abandon the restrictor plates and just let the crews be creative and let’em race⁉️ Let’em use any carb, any diff gear for instance. Bring innovation back‼️ Back off NASCAR‼️ You’re the problem‼️ Stop micromanaging every aspect of the cars and the fans will come back‼️ Stop the “demolition racing” or “pack racing” where “the big one” is the star of the show style of racing on these stupid 2 1/2 mile monstrosities. The rest of the time you’re watching the Megatron. Stay home! Watch your own TV!)
Mike Hagen based on ratings and money earned it peaked in 2005 and has been going downhill since. The 80’s-early 2000’s were definitely the biggest growth. Wish there was more tv in the 50s-70s to watch. Would’ve been amazing to see.

Ned Jarrett appears to be an absolute gentleman. Eventide you see him or hear him. He never has a negative word to say about anyone. Such a class act
He is. Loved that he got to call his son Dale winning the 500.
He was pretty cross after a Busch race when he thought Jimmy Spencer spun Dale out.
Even a gentleman gets mad sometimes. Generally when other people are not being one.
The Ned Jarrett story at the end was the best. This is a great series, any racing fan not just NASCAR fans would have a great respect for this form of racing after watching this!
Thank you for sharing. I watched them back in 1999 and really enjoyed seeing it again.

Can I just say it’s incredible hearing Bobby Allison talk about being in my hometown 40 years before I was born! That’s pretty damn cool
So very cool to hear some of the pioneers of the sport tell us about the humble beginnings.
Nascar today really needs to listen to these days....

Excellent! I loved these guys!
loved listening to the great stories they had to tell and DW still rambles on
Kimberly Pijnappel That's why he's called the mouth of the south.
That's why he is called JAWS.

I live right by Cape Lookout.. I just spent the weekend there.... That's an awesome story
They should do this again with with the 80s and 90s drivers
If NASCAR would only listen to Darrell Waltrip on this tape they may gain a few fans back
Nobody can eat like Dave Marcus! He can pack it away I’ve seen it! Lol! I sure do miss these guys! Great bunch! And Little Bud Moore was a riot! Funny guy!
Dave, along with Buddy Baker & Michael Waltrip, could close down a buffet in just a few hours!

Glaring omission, where was Richard Petty?
Fantastic

Watching this now in 2024, and realizing that what is wrong with NASCAR now is, we don't have these tough folks with a bullshit mentality,
Just a generic question, honestly what is the difference between the Bush cars engine and the NASCAR Sprint Cup car engine?
funny they didnt have any stories about dale or richard petty
In Wisconsin we bring Cemis out on the ice and everything, if a truck or a person goes through the use knowing really cares
hayden Harley and no ruufs to work on dem
Help at the front
Why did Cale and Junior leave before the end of the show?
Junior had to get home and feed his chickens and cows.

Dick Brooks was a really good stockcar driver some people these days don’t know that about Dick !
Dick was a trip!
What year was this made ?
Well, Beatty died in 98, and they said it happened a few weeks after they'd taped these programs, so...1998
Darrel waltrip was still racing when this was made because I think this was made sometime in the 90s, correct me if I’m wrong
1999 when it was released so prolly taped in 98
taped in Oct of 1998

Twenty years ago... DW said exactly what the 2018 all-star race did.. It was the best all-star race ever
This series would been greater had Richard Petty, Dale Sr. and Benny Parsons had been there too.
they were still running the 1998 season at the time of taping so I am sure they were both too busy for a race week

It’s amazing that they say they wanted downforce. And in 2019 we pray that NASCAR pulls every bit of downforce off
Cars back then needed to downforce. Big wide heavy cars. Today's cars need less downforce. Same driver different car, different requirement.
America....wake up....these guys were in it to win...in a deadly sport!.......feeling any hate here?
