Been looking for this one for a while. One of my greatest childhood professional sports memories along with the next Bucs win for the super bowl and the stars winning the Stanley cup in 99.
This marked -The final Philadelphia Eagles game at Veteran’s Stadium -The second of three straight conference championship losses for the Eagles -The first-ever conference championship win for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers -The first Super Bowl berth for Warren Sapp, Derrick Brooks, Simeon Rice, Ronde Barber, and Keyshawn Johnson
Yep. The previous year the league moved the Saturday playoff games to later in the day to maximize viewership. This was also the first year the conference title games alternated start times regardless of time zones.
@JerseyNYC83 I know that there's a pattern each year where the AFC game is first then the next year the NFC plays first. Are you saying that one of the conferences used to always be the first conference to kick off conference championship Sunday?
Felt like I was gonna cry after that opening kickoff and drive as a Bucs fan. I can still hear Joe Buck saying “Mitchell” over and over and my stomach dropping. And then the “Deuce” haunting chants as it is quickly 7-0. My aunt calls my Dad and passes the message to me that I need to just breathe. Lol
Love this game! Not really mentioned greatly was what Jurevicius was going through. His son, Michael William, had been born the week before, and was suffering from a rare, inherited metabolic disorder that he would ultimately die from two and a half months later. That catch, this game, and I think the Bucs' '02 Super Bowl run were all for Michael.
The Bucs were just better prepared mentally compared to the Eagles. The Eagles thought the Bucs would just collapse at the end just like the year before. With it being below 50 F the Bucs had only won one game when it was below 50 F. With McNabb still rusty after coming back from that broken ankle and he played like he was rusty. The big turning point in that game was that 3rd and 2 1:10. It gave the Bucs hope that they could compete in this game.
And the difference was Jon Gruden was the HC. Tony Dungy was gone. The Eagles had Dungy's number against the Bucs in the playoffs. Gruden knew alot of the schemes that the Eagles were running and had a smart gameplan to slow down the pass rush of the Eagles. Running the ball and playing stellar D. That's what Gruden had that Dungy didn't. Gruden was an offensive mind. Dungy was a defensive guy.
One of the most painful losses I have ever experienced as an Eagle fan. I'll never forget when Ronde Barber picked off that Mcnabb pass and ran it back for that clinching pick 6 the Vet turned into a church. It was the quietest I have ever heard the Vet get. And I broke down and cried the rest of the night. I didn't even watch the AFC championship game. Cause that's how crushed I was. The next day thankfully there was no school cause of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Day. And the crying continued and I was just crying my eyes out the entire day cause I felt that it was gonna be our year to win the Superbowl in San Diego. But instead the Tampa Bay Buccaneers took it away and broke my heart. It was brutal.
I'll never forget it, and when he was tackled, got up and screamed wtf as the Vet went to another level. For a few minutes, life wasn't too bad. And then soon it became very too bad.
McNabb total lack of accuracy became apparent in this game. This one wasn’t even the Bucs D stepping up as much as it was McNabb continuing his theme of being a total playoff disappointment
This was a historically great Bucs defense. They allowed 196 points in 16 games. Currently three HoF players from that D with maybe one or two more to go. McNabb had his struggles but let's not pretend he wasn't up against greatness here.
This was the worst loss of my life, especially harsh in the manner in which it was delivered. I was 23 years old at the time and had waaay too much of my well-being invested in the Philadelphia Eagles. I know many people hated it, and i understood why...but I loved the Vet. The emotional course, from less than 2 minutes in, to 4 minutes left, i learned you CAN freefall gradually. On the VHS tape I used to record it, i wrote "01.23.03 Nightmare Realized"
They totally shut the Eagles down all but that initial kickoff return and the short touchdown to start the game lol Fun fact Tampa beat the Eagles in the last Veterans Stadium game ever then beat the Eagles week 1 on Monday night at the opening of thier new stadium Lincoln Financial Field 😆 the following season.
DUDE I HAVE BEEN WAITING AN ENTIRETY TO GET THIS GAME IN HIGHLIGHT FORM TO COMPLETE MY PLAYLIST OF EVER EAGLES SEASON HIGHLIGHT REELS well mad videos got deleted and needless to say I hope you continue to add more videos
The story of this game was short, quick throws…or rather how short, quick throws burned the Eagles defense on pretty much every down the Bucs spent on offense
@jaboo82681 I think it was a defense almost perfect for the time-lots of teams still employed those dropbacks and didn’t have quick passing games yet because of the rules.
Hypothetical- would the Raiders have matched up better with Philly in SB 37? I honestly think so. Would Andy Reid have been able to simulate the OAK offense?
The Raiders would have beaten the Eagles. The Raiders decided to use Jon Gruden's playbook against Jon Gruden. Gruden played Rich Gannon in practice. That awesome Tampa Defense knew exactly what was coming and they blew them out.
@@TB-vz8xg On the flip side, if it was Bucs/Titans, I don’t think even that great Tampa defense would have known exactly what was coming if they had to go up against Air McNair
@@chrisuncleahmad that’s what I’m sayin know how good they both were of defense so with McNair and Co. Vs that Defense I think will could’ve pulled it off cause the Titans defense vs the Bucs offense know Mike Alstott was going to be able to just run while..the game could’ve been a classic
A very “symmetrical”playoff run for these Bucs: Steve Mariucci’s first game as 49ers head coach in 1997 was a loss to the Bucs. His final game as 49ers head coach was a loss to the Bucs. Donovan McNabb’s first appearance at the Vet was in a loss to the Bucs. His last appearance at the Vet was a loss to the Bucs. And of course, Gruden Bowl I. Also worth noting that these Bucs had been the last team Super Bowl champion go a full season and not give up more than 27 points in a game all year. They reached the Super Bowl by beating Andy Reid, who was the coach of course of this year’s Chiefs who matched that.

This is the most inexcusable championship game loss of both Reid's and McNabb's careers. A team that was historically bad in cold weather and this was the best you could do?
This was a historically great Bucs defense. They allowed 196 points in 16 games. Currently three HoF players from that D with maybe one or two more to go. And the Bucs offense averaged 27 pts per game in the second half of the season. That's more than enough when your D only allows 12 ppg. Philly ran in to the wrong team at the wrong time.
18 years later, the bucs beat andy Reid again.
in similar dominant fashion no less
In Feburary 2021, the stakes were even higher. I love how history repeats itself in this case!
@@marcus813 thanks in large part to their defense again. And this time they also had a HOF QB in TB12!

And somehow Dexter Jackson was Super Bowl MVP lol
Was it John Lynch's first berth too?
The Joe Jurevicius catch changed the momentum Tampa's way and it never swung back.
The Ronde Barber interception will always be engraved in my mind
Mine, too. I remember where I was when I saw it. That could be the most important play in Bucs history.
That half hearted chase by McNabb was way worse than "for who, for what"?
Me too. At the game and from start to finish a complete whirlwind of emotion. Tough walk back to the car.
This was the first time conference championship Sunday started in the late afternoon rather than around noon.

I know Philly lost an NFC-CG last year to St. Louis, but this game and that Rams game were total polar opposites.
