Adding brick to the outside of a house complicates insulating the outside of a slab. So Insulate inside.
One of the cold spots on a house is where the edge of a slab is exposed to the outdoors. Because outdoor air is a lot colder than the ground in winter, and hotter in summer, this thermal bridge is really more like a thermal runway.
We have covered two ways to Insulate monolithic slabs-for hot places and cold ones- but when you add brick the the picture, things get a little more complicated.
Basically, you need a shelf to support the brick. This can be either a piece of angle iron bolted to the foundation, or it can be a cast in place step.
But let’s start from the beginning.
A bed of compacted gravel caps the ground under the slab as a capillary break and solid base for the concrete.
Lay a plastic vapor barrier atop the gravel and Wrap the edge of the plastic up to grade as a barrier to ground moisture.
Pour that slab, adding a shelf to the outside. It is best to slope the shelf away from the house. Also, make sure it is deep enough to support brick, at least an inch of drainage space, and room for ANY exterior insulation you'll add.
Install a drip edge flashing, preferably stainless steel or copper. It is best to tuck it behind the wall sheathing if possible, but it at least should be lapped under the house wrap.
Install the exterior insulation. If you are not adding exterior insulation, add another layer of building paper.
Call in your brick layers. As they lay that first course of brick, make sure that they add weep holes every couple of feet along the bottom course. Otherwise, water that gets behind the brick won’t be able to escape. Weep holes and flashing with a kicked out edge give it a place to go.
This should be all you need for a dry slab, but before putting down a floor, it makes sense to use a waterproofing membrane or masonry paint.
With the water management system in place, turn to slowing heat flow. Lay sleepers on the slab every 24 inches with strips of rigid insulation between them. Cover it up with subfloor panels, and you are on your way to a slab assembly that ain’t scared of the weather.

With the insulation on top of the concrete, the concrete will be cold (in the wintertime). Warm, humid air from the interior will migrate to the cold concrete surface underneath the insulation and condense. I don't see a vapor barrier on top of the insulation that might prevent this from happening.
An alternative to this is to put the insulation underneath the concrete slab with a vapor barrier in between. This keeps all the concrete warm and prevents long-term moisture problems.

Yes! You exemplified a true understanding of cold condensing surface issues in masonry!

Actually no. The one showed in the video is a cvonstruction standard. What you tell, is a different story. This is double insulation.

@@454Casull usually, air migration is not the case. The case is, when we heat up the room, we don't want heat to be loss from the bottom of the concrete slab, that's why, we put a good rigid insulation over the concrete slab and under the cement screed . Other thing is, that for better performance, you can put heat insulation under the slab itself, but this is an extra. Too costly

You left out one important point. How do you expect to install forms with a membrane that goes under the footing and under the slab???? Also, insulation should go under the slab, not over.

Great informative video; however, our brick porch was built as part of the original construction of our home in the 1980's. We are the third-(3rd) in the line ownership of our home in northwest Florida. To the best of my knowledge the porch sits atop the solid concrete slap; the porch has one interior brick-wall which is shared with the family room; thus this wall is insulated and wired, the remaining three brick walls are just brick walls. Approximately 12 to 15 years ago my parents installed a nice tiled floor and double pane windows on the porch. The utilization of the porch is according to personal comfort or toleration; however, I am researching how to best insulate and ventilate the three exterior brick walls. Please advise - thank you very much.

A great place to start would be to send a note to the architect listed in this video, Steve Baczek. He does work all over the country, so your climate zone should not be a mystery to him.
Tell him you saw his video on protradecraft and he will be extra nice to you.

Great Video. I have seen cases also when the rigid insulation is placed under the concrete slab. What do you think about that option? Thanks

Leaving thermal mass on the outside of the insulation is not the best option. Depending on your climate you will save a lot of money in heating/cooling costs by installing foam under the slab.

I agree. Insulation underneath the slab. 1 1/2 inch of extruded polystyrene with insulation between the edges of the slab and the foundation

Thanks for the video, just a couple of questions,
    1) I have a precast concrete foundation without a brick ledge, how do you recommend I install a brick ledge?
    2) What are your thoughts on TEC Hydraflex? I was going to use that to paint the foundation floor prior to installing the sleepers and rigid insulation.

You can bolt brick ledge onto the foundation. Not sure about that particular brand, but we are generally fans of liquid waterproofing. Though, the foam ought to provide all of the water protection you need.

I'm in a cape cod style house. The upstairs is unbearable in the summer, it's already insulated what could I do to stop the radiant heat from inner roof to the actual roof and walls on the sunny side

Probably not enough insulation to stop the heat gain.
