Old Chisel Plow Gets New Chisel Teeth!

- It's almost time to fire up the tractors for spring planting on the rice farm. First though, there old chisel plows need new chisel teeth. In this video I explain how to install chisel teeth. I also give an update on how our rice fields are draining of winter water.

Like brand new good job, for planting corn the chisel with the wings at the bottom is the best for descompacting the subsoil than some good passes with the discs and for a better soil bed always trying that the organic matter get not covered at no more deep that 3 inches or instead of build and decompose in a organic matter will convert to carbon
For the best bed for planting the rotary tiller does an amazing job

Chisel Plowing??? Back in 2011 when I attended a service school for Argo Group (McCormick/Landini Tractors), I was ridiculed for bring up chisel plowing. The service manager from Doncaster, England claimed that no one chisels anymore. “Really?” I asked. A guy from Australia said, “Who chisels?” So now I am watching this video of you changing the chisel plow teeth. I live in Kansas. I see people using the chisel plow before the wheat is planted. This video proves that Mark Twain was right. “It ain't what you don't know that gets you into trouble. It's what you know for sure that just ain't so.”
Have always used chisel plows i live in central Wisconsin every farmer around me uses chisel plows it's faster than plowing and doesn't leave a furrow
In Saskatchwan, we only use chisels for breaking prarie. Narrow knock ons can be used for breaking or seed bed prep.

I always believe and practice starting nuts by hand and then using the power tools. This prevents cross-threading.
When I was farming we elected to always use those twisted and reversable shovels rather than spikes.
They were great for shredded cotton stalks and for soybean stubble.
What pattern did you install the twist chisels?
I'm super nervous about how little rain we got up here in NorCal. Hope we get more soon.
Long range forecast for Central-Southern Ca is nada zip rain for this season.
We are north of Sacramento. Often times we get rain most of California doesn't. Big thing is making sure Shasta has good snow pack to feed the Sacramento, and Oroville dam is full. This has been a dry winter up here sadly.

We would grind a new point on them. But we are very small to your but we do have lots of clay. Tobacco, Soy Bean and corn for farm use.
Man, that would take a long time. But I suppose you’d make up for the time lost taking them off, rotating them or buying new ones. How many acres you farm, Jake?

Hi William! You’re right we should. I hate dragging that air compressor around. And that’s all we use it for-aside from airing up tires and blowing out air filters.

How do you decide what pattern to install the twist chisels?
I noticed that your tractor tires are pretty worn down, or at least appears to be. Do you guys prefer worn tire for you farm option or just waiting for the right time to swap them out for new tires?
Not sure the cost of each of those chisel teeth but could they be resharpened once or twice to save money and then drop down a hole on the bolt?

The teeth are self sharpening. They have to be replaced before they wear down to the shank.
Hah! First view :) I was looking around the used bookstore and found an old lost treasure book by a guy named Penfield. He had a story in there you might be interested in.

Wht are you using chisel points instead of swept shovels?
While sweep shovel do a good job turning dirt over-we use the chisel shanks to rip the soil open about 8” deep. This deeper rip allows us to air out and dry down the soil.

Yes we farm in South Georgia mainly peanuts and cotton and a small amount of corn
Going back to the other vid when you took the old ones off theres no difference the only difference is the new ones have paint
Haha! Aaron, again, tell that to Pops! I’m with you man. The older ones definitely do not have as straight of an edge to them. They’ve rounded off and not as wide. Sharpen them and they’ll become even a bit more narrow. Could the go another season. Perhaps. Would they do as good of job? Perhaps not. Are they more likely to break? Yeah. Do we want to stop tractor work to replace one? No. But I’m with you, dude.

@@Ricefarmingtv and also not as thick as they originally were but you guys run in a more sandy environment up here it's clay black dirt and rocks we use a drag to level our fields and we get 6 to 8 inch teeth in the time we use it we burn through teeth like there nothing cause of the rocks and my grandfather don't wanna spend the money for a rock rake picker cause he seen one go for 2500 and our neighbor is selling one for 5500 but he don't wanna spend the money cause of see that one for 2500 he thinks he's gonna find another one around the same price not he'll never find one that cheap and condition ever again same with our disk chisel plow we have 13 shank 14ft wide brillion disk chisel plow being pulled by a case ih 9380 400 hp and honestly thats a waste of power
when do rice farmers actually take a vacation from rice farming? It seems like there is a specific task to cross off the rice farming "to-do" list every day. If you are not in the field then you are working on tractors and equipment. Learning so much. Thank you Matt you're the man.

Yes!! I do luv that stuff especially when I revisit that bolt in a few years and it comes right off!
