Firstly, it's a song about revolution, and was a popular march for the armies of the First French Republic and remained popular throughout various revolutionary groups ever since. Such was it's widespread popularity that purportedly, the bands of the Finnish Red Faction would play it on the march during their civil war, and a Russian Bolshevik version was commissioned entitled 'Workers Marseillaise'. Lastly, given the theme of the video, and the fact that the other tunes in the medley correspond to famous foreign columns in Republican Spain's service (Warszawianka for the Poles, Thalmanlied for the Germans etc), La Marseillaise could also be a further allusion to the Frenchmen who served in the International Brigades.
