Wait, quick question, did the sound from the iPhone audio output transmit the data for the Tetris game, or is the sound used to navigate through the files in the computer to start the game? This sounds really fascinating for 80/90s tech
@@RFrappuccinoNot quite, the cassette encodings of 1975 to 1985 were simpler than what was needed on phone lines, because audio quality was better but speed stability weaker . Computer had to compensate if tape was played back slower or faster than when recorded . Each brand had their own system . Modems needed to talk to each other and deal with bad phone lines, but could rely on the other computer having a fairly precise bit rate (although RS232 would correct itself once per byte anyway) .
This is the first computer I bought when I was 16 years old together with my 14 year old brother (after 2+ years of jobs everywhere) And after 2 years we sold it for the same price! We played BOLO a lot. I became a graphics designer, my brother a programmer! Apple was always in our lives, and the older we got the more it became a love/hate relationship! This is now 40 years ago (we’re 56 and 54)
My parents got their first Apple in 1985 for University work I was 6 yrs old and thrilled to be able to made drawings and art on its graphic program and added short stories. I also remember playing Dungeons and Dragons with Monsters represented by letters and conquering them using the Enter Key and oldschool packman style dungeon levels.
Apple II WAS ahead of its time and the most successor PC for apple inc in 80s and end of 90s it was produced by one of the founders of apple itself stave jobs in early 80s 80~81 or late 70s
In the ‘old days’ almost all computers used standard audio cassettes for storing data and applications, including games. On some home computers, you had to have the audio level just right, or the game wouldn’t load… you could spend almost 10 minutes waiting for a game to load and then it might fail because of a fault on the tape, or because a mains electricity ‘glitch’ interrupted the audio slightly, so you’d have to rewind the tape and wait while it loaded again! Those audio tapes can now be saved as audio files on a modern device and played back into the original computer as shown in this video. Instead of playing the audio from potentially very unreliable magnetic tape, it can be played very consistently from a device such as a mobile phone.
@@InnesbIt would be cooler if we could still get fresh quality blank tapes and tape drives . Plus interface dongles/cards to load raw files from modern storage if just wanting file storage .
Tape storage is actually the reason copy protection was created Back then you could just dub a tape to share a game There was a walkman you could even do it with
Theres a channel called technology connections Wealth of information on everything I believe he covered it And I believe 8bit guy did too I know atleast one did where I learned about the double deck walkman

That's genius. A tape recorder that doesn't deteriorate over time!

The sound is the data, a type of FSK, where high and low pitches represent 1’s and 0’s.
