  • MPGomatic.com puts a 2019 Toyota Corolla XSE Hatchback to the test. [Get Local Camry Pricing: mpgomatic.com/1800/fyt.html ] This installment documents a pair of Highway MPG loops along with a 0-60 MPH acceleration run.
    Vehicle Tested: 2019 Toyota Corolla XSE
    Starting MSRP: $22,900.
    The Corolla XSE's Toyota Safety Sense-P (TSS-P) package includes a Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Automatic High Beams, and Full-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control. In addition, the XSE includes Blind Spot Monitors with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert and Intelligent Clearance Sonar with Rear Cross-Traffic Braking.
    The EPA lists two estimates for the CVT Corolla Hatch: 32 city / 42 highway / 36 combined MPG and 30 city / 38 highway / 33 combined MPG. The six-speed manual carries a lower rating of 28 city / 37 highway / 31 combined MPG.
    MPGomatic produces car review videos with a unique focus on gas mileage, in-cabin technology, and driveability. Yep, we're the folks that shoot those 0-60 MPH tests.

      Captain, what are you talking about, this is CRAP! This car's closest competitor, the Civic hatch, does it in 6.7s. Absolutely destroys it. That's because Honda doesn't force idiotic simulated gears on the CVT, which hurt acceleration, efficiency, and ride comfort.

      Carlos, you need to look at power and weight, not the simple existence of a turbo. The Civic has 93% the weight/power ratio, and 79% the 0-60 time. Here's an excellent video on the transmission in this Corolla; 5min in he talks about the steps: ruclips.net/video/HanImTejIVM/видео.html

    68 mph [110 km/h] is a great cruising speed!
    It seems that my Corolla achieves the best economy between 70-120 km/h [45-75 mph].
    My 2012 Toyota Corolla gets under 7 L/100 km [over 33 mpg] when at 110 km/h [68 mph] for long periods!
    An awesome car, fantastic fuel-economy, and great reliability!
    Great job, Dan-- and thank-you!

      I'm torn between this car and the new Camry XSE 4 cylinder, they get comparable mpg's which in reality they shouldn't...this car should beat the Camry by at least 5-10 mpg's based on it's size and smaller engine. I do love the styling though. FYI to anyone who's looking to buy, do your homework first...I heard there's a recall on the torque converter

    The Corolla hatchback's fuel economy is almost always understated. I've been getting 39 to 40 mpg driving around town, though not in rush-hour traffic, with my Hatchback SE model with CVT transmission. I haven't had a chance yet to get it out on the open highway for a long enough trip to accurately test highway MPG, but Consumer Reports' test results showed 51 MPG highway.

    I am deciding between this, a Polo (not the same class but I still really like this one), the new Ford Focus or the new Kia Ceed. A hard choice for me:
    - This Corolla is at 1st place design wise definitely, but need more info. Also the middle instrument screen's shape feels a bit cheap not nicely fit like in other cars (e.g. volvo v40, Megane, Polo)
    - I find the Polo really nice with the DSG(test driven) and the Active info Display. Also love the LED headlights on this one.
    - Focus looks really good and might be the most fun to drive
    - The Ceed, well, I don't know much about the Kia experience yet, but design wise the Kia interests me.
    For someone that comes from a 1.6 DCi Megane (2017) anything under 10 seconds is good enough. And also ANY gearbox will be better to use. It is not nice, the Megane manual.

    A different look at the Toyota
    More about how it drives and how effective the cruise control is plus the eccomics of the car .
    So many people are more concerned about it looking sporty but it isnt quick.
    Is how quick a car is really the most important quality a car has especially on a public road?
    Corollas are great cars and always have been as they are ultra reliable, virtually bullet proof and cost effective.
    This one looks sporty and handles well?
    Not really made for 4 adults but that is why you buy a bigger car.
    I must admit that the idea of having a small 1.6 with a turbo appeals simply due the very wide torque band they have but at this point in time Toyota do mot offer them either here in Australia or the USA.
    In Europe they have a 1.2 turbo Corolla.
    Im getting my Corolla in a three weeks, its on the boat from Japan.

    Have you calculated the actual MPG by filling the tank, driving until the tank is 1/4 full or less, then filling it and diving the miles traveled by the gallons put in the tank?
    I ask because I rented a Corolla sedan a couple of weeks ago and while the dash display showed 43.5 MPG for 350 miles of mixed driving (~70% highway), the calculated MPG when I filled the tank was about 38.5. Not bad, but a big difference from what the dash display showed.

    • @mpgomatic
      @mpgomatic  5 лет назад +1

      rts7500 That’s a good point! I measure by tank fills in my own car (keeping track with Fuelly), but I can control most of the variables (there are many). Did you start with a completely full tank in the rental? If it was anything less than totally full, that will show up in the average. The tank gauge may have looked totally full when you picked the car up, but it may have actually been short.

    • @rts7500
      @rts7500 5 лет назад +1

      MPGomatic Completely full tank. I picked up the car, drove it to work and for a few errands, then topped off the tank and reset the dash display before setting off on the 350 miles of driving noted above. I had a similar experience with a Honda Fit I rented, a difference of 3 - 5 MPG between what the display showed and what I calculated by using the "fill the tank and divide" method. It wouldn't stop me from buying a Corolla Hatchback, but I'd expect maybe 45 tops on a long, steady highway run - and I'd be quite happy with that.

    • @mpgomatic
      @mpgomatic  5 лет назад +1

      rts7500 Interesting! That’s a significant variation. I found out that my ‘99 Civic’s gas tank will take more fuel when it’s parked on an angle. If there’s a significant drop off from the service station’s concrete pad to the asphalt and the car sits with a slew, more gas fits in the tank. That made me obsessive about filling at the same exact pump.

      BTW, why is it a "good thing" when a CVT transmission acts like a regular transmission? I thought that the benefit of a CVT was that it kept the power to rpm at an optimal place, so the fake gear shifts seems to be counterproductive for using a CVT, I would think. Why not just use a normal transmission at this point?

    It is nice to see that Toyota is taking steps back toward building fun cars, but the fact is, this car is not a good value. For a few grand more, you can have a Focus ST-a car that is way more fun, way faster, and handles just as well if not better.

    • @mpgomatic
      @mpgomatic  5 лет назад +1

      GyroPyro12 The Focus ST is awesome! Sadly, its days are numbered here in America, as Ford will not be selling them for much longer. This Corolla Hatch is not intended to compete with the ST. Hopefully Toyota will offer a performance version in the future.

    • @GyroPyro121212
      @GyroPyro121212 5 лет назад

      MPGomatic Yes the Corolla is in a different class. It gets better mpg than the ST as well. However, I was just comparing values. There are other cars in the class that I think deliver better value. That said, this car the 6 speed manual should be far better than any of the corollas produced since the last XRS. With any luck, Toyota will take the XSE and make an XSE-T or something along those lines. This car's engine with lowered compression and stronger internals and fitted with a turbocharger would put Toyota back in the game.

      Personally I think adding shifts to a CVT is like adding tines to a spoon. CVTs shouldn't have defined shifts and it's a shame automakers caved to please the people not willing to change with the times.
      There are conventional automatics out there for those who hate CVTs.

      Scott Kinda like a spork? 🤔 It’s crazy how much higher the CVT MPG ratings are than the six-speed manual. I want to test the stick, but they didn’t have one in the media fleet. Knock wood they add one.

    • @tails300
      @tails300 5 лет назад

      That’s because they added a physical first gear to the cvt to help with accelerating. So the first shift isn’t simulation it’s an actual gear. The 2020 sedan has the same cvt.

    Wanting a CVT to feel like a traditional auto is your mind making you think something far worse is better because of familiarity. CVTs should not simulate shifts, it defeats the purpose and engineering advantage. It should be either at peak power for people who are flooring it, peak efficiency for those eggshelling it, and the compromise in between for various amounts of acceleration requests in between. It irks me that they shift these days, a lot. It is intentionally making them worse, less efficient.
    Imagine your next airplane trip, they throttle up and down the engines to simulate gears so it sounds more like your car; all because you had come to expect a certain experience while accelerating ... or imagine if generators operated like that ... varying rpm vs a static load.
    That is what your car is; the load of accelerating or maintaining speed of a multiple ton box of steel and glass If your goal is 0-X mph, why would you vary output the entire way? Do you turn the heat up and down on a gas stove until your water boils?
    Just jokingly try to share (poorly) how flawed the logic is of making a CVT pretend to shift like an automatic.
    Appreciate the video; nice to know I could get 50 give or take out of it. I've gotten over 50 in a auto BRZ, could get over 40 regularly in it, my friend gets mid 30s without trying. EPA estimates keep going lower to mimic average drivers and conditions which means I beat their numbers by a bigger margin. I've gotten in the 90s mpg in a 1st gen Honda Civic Hybrid. 48 mpg in a late 90s Accord sedan loaded to the teeth with 3 people's worth of stuff that made the rear springs squat. It is fun. My goal here is trying to figure out if I want the manual or CVT; how they both feel to normal people, not enthusiasts, what their efficiency is like to each other, etc.
    Car seems really quiet, smooth. It would be quick enough for me, My late 80s RX7s had about the same power ;) but I could only get about 30 in them.
    Take care

      also, did you actually floor it for 0-60? Pretty sure during my research during a launch it is supposed to redline the real gear then shift over to CVT and hold at 6800 rpm until you reach target speed. Now I have to do more research. If it NEVER operates like the CVT it is, I will be too annoyed with it :p 6 speed it most likely is for (stupid) reasons lol

    I test drove this along with the civic hatchback, and let's just say test driving the Corolla hatch set the bar real low, and the civic hatch blew it out of the water!! This car is cool looking, but the transmission with its 1st gear launch is a gimmick waiting to cause issues in the long run, no one can fit comfortably in the rear seats, and the trunk is trash compared to the rest of its class competitors, also wtf is 3.49% interest for a finance rate for 48 months?? Wtf I'm not buying a Lexus here!!! Civic hatch is so good I bought on out of the gate, last week, and I'm 18 years old
