Agree… I have recently purchased an all original, white, 1991 VFR750 RC36 with 14k miles.. I always wanted one, and it looks superb. I trial fitted today a high level Delkevic exhaust, & removed the baffle. Excellent. My favorite bikes for sound is my 2002 RC51 with Sato exhaust, and my friends Kawasaki modified supercharged H2. Sounds like it is tearing the space/time continuum. Riding behind it is and hearing it is unbelievable!

Had a 916 with 45mm Termi’s, an Aprilia RSV Factory with carbon Akrapovic exhausts…..and currently a 1999 Suzuki TLR in my collection with Yoshimura exhausts.. It’s the TLR that sounds the best..in my opinion 😊
Many years ago when I was 16 my old chap took me to buy my first motorcycle. A 49 cc MZ Simpson motorcycles. From the local motorcycle shop . The owner Had his old factory honda from the late 60 in his showroom. A 350 Honda 6 , which he rode to victory, as a works rider for Honda On very rare occasions he would start it up !! To this day I can still remember the noise echoing around the town . Thank you so much you brought it all back to me .there is much more to this story. Maybe I’ll share another time Alas both my old chap and John have passed now . Cheers to the both of them .
I love the sound of those sixes that Kaplan shows. The Kawasaki amazed me, I didn't know they existed. Lol I've had some nice sounding bikes myself. A 2002 Honda VFR800 with a Staintune exhaust, 2008 Suzuki Hayabusa, and now a 2023 Yamaha MT 10 with the CP4 engine. They're all good bikes and lots of fun to ride.
well, you got a mention, and i thought the Crighton covered it, as really, it is the updated re engineered idea from the Norton, but it was always Crighton's design
Totally agree about the Honda 297... and I'm old enough@ 71 to remember Ago on the triples and fours especially at the TT.On the banking at the Creg, he passed me several times so close that there was a percussion type of physical blast and the explosive bark that made me flinch involuntarily ruining my panning and left me with photos consisting of empty tarmac, tarmac with fraction of Ago's helmet, tarmac with end of bellowing pipes...I was 0nly 17 so improved over the years to pin sharp pics of Bob Mckinly,SMBH ducati win, Mcguiness etc but I'll never forget I'll never forget the Triumph Slippery Sam,MVs as their revs peaked and crashed as the back tyre left the ground around the mountain. one tiny criticism is you very informative comme ntary can spoil the sounds we all want to hear..maybe subtitles could help. Excellent research all the same.thanks. One thing that is not covered by anyone is the on bike sound experience, my 2000 Ducati's 916 engine has a great exhaust sound above 6000- 9500 rpm ( no catalysers), but the induction howl/moan going down the box gets me everytime.😅

As person from ussr era would add jawa 350 and iz planeta:) they had no performance at all, but that sound was promise of adventure (when that bike was finally started) that 2 stroke low rpm popping sound in idle is just magic
Welcome aboard mate, I remember an old Jawa CZ i had for a short while :-), it had its flaws, but it was good fun :-) enjoy the ride and cheers for the support
Good video but to me the simple throaty sound of a big single four stroke single with a well chosen muffler also has a lot of attraction , especially set up to shoot fire and backfire when hard decelerating. Loved “singing the engine” through the tunnels and between the tall buildings of Seattle when I got off of work late on a Saturday night .

Listening to the loping idle is just as important. A moment of silence would be nice at these times. Good video though. Interesting and informative. Thanks!
i try and balance it mate but with this video its a bit different, and with many of them race bikes, you have the problem many just wont idle consistently

It's funny; I was sitting here thinking about the 69 BSA Rocket 3, and how magical it sounded to 16 year old me. Actually 69 was a special time: The Kawasaki Mach 3, Rocket 3 and the KO Honda 750. Even stock they were all new, uncorked and made a glorious noise. The fun didn't last. By 1970 bikes started getting quieter.

Not as versed in motorcycles and models, I’ve heard of most all these bike. But it’s still enjoyable to listen and learn. Two of my favorite motorcycle sounds is the Yamaha MT 09 and a Triumph Daytona 675. I can’t leave without mentioning my own 75’ Kawasaki Z1b with it’s 4/1 header. I can recognize it’s sound with my eyes closed. I can pull up to any car meet and heads turn to see what sounds so mean and nasty.
we all have our own favourites 🙂 and I do love triples. I have a 955 Daytona with a Race pipe on, being honest though, the sound of the old Trophy 900 I had was better. sounded like a Lancaster bomber coming in to land 🙂 It was a very hard list to thin down
From the old "Bike" magazines... Last page... Ogri! I am an official, honorary member Of the Ogri bike club first started in BFPO Germany and sanctioned by the Ogri artist! We were the only people allowed,by him, to bear this honour! And was and still proud of that Honour!
Honda's whole history makes perfect sense when you realize that Mr. Honda's first great product was a piston ring whose spec and metallurgy was head and shoulders above the competition. He had to build his own motors to use them to their capacity!🙂
Excellent auditory treasures every one. Great video yet again. Well worth the wait. For me, the Britton V twin has a quality reminiscent of the Rolls Royce Merlin: raw and untamed, yet with a definite brutal purpose. As Clarkson pointed out, Aston Martin V8s are “poetic violence”, but New Zealand’s rarest export, and the engine that won the ‘39-‘45 air war both stand alone in their own realm. Thank you for sharing. No need to apologise for the output delay. Peace
About the 125-5 ...in an article I read at the time ...Mike Hailwood was testing it ...the mechanics said to him we don't know what it will rev to so take it to 18,000....after the test as he was walking away Mike casually said to them....by the way it revs to 22,000.....

So many sixes on this list. Kinda makes me sad that manufacturers are being forced to pare down to fewer cylinders for emissions regulations. Cheers and thank you for the wonderful video!
Let us be clear, the manufacturers are building twins because they are cheaper, not because they are more efficient with fewer emissions. IMO that is :-)
@barebonesmc I completely agree that the twins are indeed being produced for cheaper. The expense of meeting emissions standards has forced out many Supersport four cylinder 600s from production. Engines with fewer cylinders typically produce less internal friction, which can be more efficient and more easily pass emissions standards without costly investment. The cheaper option is also the easier one to pass bureaucratic mandates. Maybe low sales figures and an aging demographic combined with a cost of living crisis has also pushed motorcycle design into this direction. I know I am unlikely to see or hear anything "new" that is as exciting as the motorcycles compiled into this video. I have to admit I am jealous of your experience following Honda racing sixes from the sixties around a track. Glorious is a fitting word to describe it.
@@Cobblestonerton it is interesting, i know of no other industry that at the same time as moaning all the time that sales are down, invest nothing in advertising to get new customers. they seem content just to squeeze higher and higher margins out of the existing customers, and show little interest in creating new ones. yes politicians and regulations play a part, but i do think the big players have a lot to answer for to be honest
So smaller cc bikes have worse throttle response but at pitching cornering speed that's an advantage and a better learning curve. Less chance of over shooting and if there are other riders it's just the hope that they have the corner speed right so you can add a tad more with throttle adjustment that does less ie less chance of losing the back
I love the sound of the R1 racers, but as an MT10 owner, I prefer it's sound. It is absolutely brilliant and I'm besotted by mine. I agree with your assessment of the best sound. I was on the Strubben Tribune bend at Assen for (what we called) the 500 cc Motorcycle Grand Prix in 1980 and Mike did a few demo laps on his old RC174 and as he pootled past us, he just kept pulling in the clutch and revving the B0ll0cks off it. Wonderful sound.

Great video, and of course there is the question of personal taste, but I feel the big V-twins are underrepresented. My Moto Guzzi 850 le Mans with Rex pipes is still one of the greatest sounding bikes ever, if not the greatest of all time. That the BSA 750cc Rocket 3 made 12th place was satisfying, but I would have rated it higher. Mine was a love-hate relationship. Great to ride (once the stupid cow-horn handlebars for the US market were replaced with clubman bars), ate all the bigger Japanese bikes for breakfast on the open road, and sounded great - but leaked oil and the electrics were atrocious until I sorted them.

Oh my. Oh my. I rode, at break-neck speed, my Laverda 3CE (predecessor to the Jota - which I later owned) down to the Bol D'Or at the Paul Ricard circuit in Southern France to watch the Laverda V6 race. As they say 'I was there' !. It was a hot week-end. At the end of the official racing the track was opened for approx. 30 mins (I suspect unintentionally) to spectators with bikes to take a blast around. I remember putting in 3 laps with my buddy who was on a Honda 900 Super Sport, before they closed it down. Such fantastic memories. I really like my current Moto Guzzi V7 850 but this has me wanting to go out and buy a more powerful bike !. Even at my age, once speed gets in the blood ... it is hard to shake.

I was riding to work last week and a bloke came screaming past me on a CBR250RR. I couldn't hear the engine sound for the manic laughing and screaming from the rider. When I caught up to him at the lights, we had a quick chat. Turns out he has a few litre bikes, but said the little 250 was the most exciting machine he has ever ridden. I'd give a left testicle to own a tricked one. Time to start saving.

My goodness, where have I been ? Not just my favourite motorcycle channel but pushing others out of the way for first viewing rights. What a ride I had on that Triumph triple !
Not to disrespect Giacomo in any way but I feel I should mention the context of MV's domination of the 500/350 classes between 1967 and 1974, 1967 was the year MV's main rival Honda pulled out of GP racing and there was no other machines that could challenge them until the advent of Yamaha and the two strokes, in 1972 the rider who provided a portent for the future was the late great Jarno Saarinen when he finished second to Ago in the 350 world championship this prompted MV to replace the 3 cylinder with a 4, which incidentally was another great sounding bike, tragically Jarno was killed at Monza along with Renzo Pasolini in 1973 a very sad day.

Many years ago when I was 16 my old chap took me to buy my first motorcycle. A 49 cc MZ Simpson motorcycles. From the local motorcycle shop . The owner
Had his old factory honda from the late 60 in his showroom. A 350 Honda 6 , which he rode to victory, as a works rider for Honda On very rare occasions he would start it up !! To this day I can still remember the noise echoing around the town .
Thank you so much you brought it all back to me .there is much more to this story. Maybe I’ll share another time
Alas both my old chap and John have passed now .

The Crossplane R1 engine is a peach
In this list i miss the Norton Rotary racebike.
Suchva special bike.
well, you got a mention, and i thought the Crighton covered it, as really, it is the updated re engineered idea from the Norton, but it was always Crighton's design
One thing that is not covered by anyone is the on bike sound experience, my 2000 Ducati's 916 engine has a great exhaust sound above 6000- 9500 rpm ( no catalysers), but the induction howl/moan going down the box gets me everytime.😅
glad it jogged some good memories mate, and i am editing out a raw sound compilation as we speak lol that is why i left the gaps, but the one im doing is just the best clips with no voiceover at all, no subtitles even, just the bikes and the music that they make 🙂Cheers for watching. Ride Free 🙂

For your merch my friend.... "Who needs therapy, I ride a bike!" End of! No explanation needed! Anger management and "Executive relief" every time anyone throws their leg over their bike in one session, no matter the size of that/their bike! Keep up the good work my brother!
Thanks for your support mate 🙂 the feedback does help me and i do appreciate it
As person from ussr era would add jawa 350 and iz planeta:) they had no performance at all, but that sound was promise of adventure (when that bike was finally started) that 2 stroke low rpm popping sound in idle is just magic
What an amazing video, and quality audio archive of some of the most glorious sounds made by man. It brings tears to my eyes along with joy to my heart, for which I cannot thank you enough! Please keep 'em coming Good Sir - these are treasures beyond price.

Listening to the loping idle is just as important. A moment of silence would be nice at these times.
Good video though. Interesting and informative. Thanks!
i try and balance it mate but with this video its a bit different, and with many of them race bikes, you have the problem many just wont idle consistently
@@barebonesmc The idle inconsistency is what makes that beautiful engine sound I'd like to hear. I've been around race engines all my life. Thanks again for the information!

The sound of a bike is a very important part of riding. That's why I think it will be a very long time before electric bikes really catch on.
I think that is one aspect, range and range anxiety is probably the biggest issue for me though
@@barebonesmc Okay, I'm not familiar with the range of e-bikes. I'm a singles- and twin guy myself, I think I'd miss those explosions too much. But luckily we're not all the same. P.S. Really like your videos!
@@svendtveskg5719 indeed mate, our differences are what make the world interesting 🙂 to be clear though, i am not a big fan of the electrics. the battery tech just isnt there yet as far as im concerned, and yes, i would miss that sound and feeling too. which is why i spend much of my time rescuing and keeping the old ones going 🙂

Honda's 6 cylinder 250 was a delight.

The RCV213V is one hell of a V4 engine...
So smaller cc bikes have worse throttle response but at pitching cornering speed that's an advantage and a better learning curve. Less chance of over shooting and if there are other riders it's just the hope that they have the corner speed right so you can add a tad more with throttle adjustment that does less ie less chance of losing the back
A good point well put mate 🙂Cheers for the comment. Ride Free 🙂

Great to ride (once the stupid cow-horn handlebars for the US market were replaced with clubman bars), ate all the bigger Japanese bikes for breakfast on the open road, and sounded great - but leaked oil and the electrics were atrocious until I sorted them.
glad you enjoyed it mate There were some hard choices with many amazing bikes left out 🙂 Theres plenty more on the channel and the website, let me know what you think. hope youll climb aboard. Cheers for watching. Ride Free 🙂
Oh my.
