Epic final. The replay has still one of the biggest TV audiences ever for a game. And both matches were played in April because of the upcoming World Cup Finals in Mexico where many of these players were heading to.
I went to both games. Thats my Union Jack flag hanging partially over the Stretford end tunnel. What a Chelsea night. The whole Chelsea end sang , " ee, ay, addio we won the cup " non-stop for half an hour. Brilliant.
I was there for the replay - couldn't get a ticket for Wembley. I was behind the Goal where Osgood scored that famous flying header. Other than the '66 World cup final at Wembley the replay was the most exciting game I ever saw live mostly because it was Chelsea's first FA Cup win. Thank you for posting. Chelsea fan since 1955.
I was eight years old and brought up in an Everton family, but I wanted Chelsea to win so much (the cup final, many of you will remember was MASSIVE in those days) that I supported them for a few years, before starting to go to Goodison on my own in '75. I retained a great affection for Chelsea though, right up until Abramovich came in and Peter Osgood remains to this day, my favourite ever player. There was a sports shop in Liverpool that had a big poster of Ossie at the top of the escalator and my Mum hounded them until they let her take it and she gave it me that Christmas (71, I think.) I was made up and had it on my wall for years! I was gutted when the great man passed away and was actually with my Mum when the news came on the tv and her eyes followed me as I left the room in tears. I never got to meet my hero, but had planned to find his pub, near Southampton. Alas I was too late. There were some great players on both sides and in particular for Leeds, in these two games, Terry Cooper shone out as a superb footballer. Mum bought me a replica of Chelsea's cup winning shirt (the Wembley version) and I still wore it even when the sleeves were torn and frayed! One thing about the coverage in the replay though: does anyone else think the singing is canned, except just before the first half ends? Was 'Here we go' around in those days? Anyway, thanks for taking me so far back to recall great memories, by posting this. Paul Newton, Bootle.

Two absolutely epic ties. I was nearly nine and an avid Chelsea fan, my memories of the matches are a bit sketchy but I'll never forget the joy of the replay. It's the first time I've seen it in colour - we only had black & white telly! The tackles were hard but nobody rolled around on the ground unless seriously hurt, the matches flowed much better for it. That's how we played at school. Like the pro's we played on some terrible pitches - energy sapping mud baths! Best years of my life.
Such an honour to see comments by the real John Dempsey, Chelsea legend. I was a little kid watching you play on TV- too young to go to games. The FA Cup and the Cup Winners cup were so important for us. Gave us bragging rights on the playground with all those Utd and particularly Arsenal fans in North London. It was a great time to be a football fan with great players. I wonder if you ever thought of writing a book? I just read Charlie Cooke's biography. But thank you again for the kindness you show to fans. You gave us lots of joy, Mr Dempsey!

Yes, goals aplenty from those 3 on the cup run. Osgood (8), Houseman (6) and Hutchinson (5). The only match that wasn't televised was the 3-1 away win in the replay at Burnley where Houseman was said to have played his best game ever in a Chelsea shirt. Bonetti gone now as well. RIP to those 4 Chelsea legends.

This and the replay together was the most exciting cup final I have ever seen . Fantastic days and like you said , I remember it like it was yesterday .
Thanks for putting on this particular version - hardly ever see any action from the first game! Remember watching the replay live on BBC at home in Glasgow. Fitba' wis fitba' in those days, check out those tackles. If nowadays if you're wondering what happened to the flow of top Scots players into the English top flight - in those days with a live cup final we counted up the Scots on each side and favoured the team with the most!!! Gone Days!!!!
Thank you James for your words me and I scored 22 goals in my time at Chelsea not too bad for a defender. Peter Bonetti was a great goalkeeper and I was lucky to play in such a great team.
As a Gooner I have to admit this was an epic of its era. No diving to get players sent off, no over analysing. Just 100% blood, thunder and skill. How come the caption says BBC tv replay (Old Trafford) even though this has to be an ITV broadcast as Brian Moore commentated and I remember the original BBC broadcast lost sound just before Mick Jones scored?
Well Brian Moore was originally a BBC commentator, but you're right. The Final is an ITV broadcast I think, and the Replay is a BBC broadcast with Brian Moore's ITV commentary dubbed on top.
Tavy@ i didnt realise how big old trafford was in 1970. It was huge! A pal of mine whent down to watch celtic vs rapid vienna in 1983,84 and he said it was some stadium then. The best ground he had been to. 62 thousand at this great match here. A loved all the dirty strips and half of the white lines are coverd with mud. Great days!!!! But that referee is steaming. A played a hard fast game. But doing nothing to jack charlton for kicking that guy and couldv broke hes leg. is not on. A cant believe he just stood and didnt even send charlton off for that.
Superb presentation, thank you for posting this. Even as a long time Leeds Utd supporter I enjoyed this. The comments below about the violence in the game are very interesting. Yes Eddie Gray was neutralized early in the game by a heavy foul. Would have been interesting if all those red cards had happened, would have whittled it down to almost a five a side match.
I watched both games on the telly ! It was so exciting and marvelous ! It was then that Chelsea begun to be a great club of football. We went on to win the Cup Winners Cup against Real Madrid on a Final played in Greece .
***** ...so you think you you know a lot about football, do you ? Do you play it ? and so Bradford is a much better team than Chelsea then...never occurred to you that the blues were not very interested in winning that particular match, did it ?
Erik Carmel You hardly became a great club after this game. you won one more trophy a year later. got relegated in 1975 and only really began to reach the dizzy heights again in 1997
dlamiss Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Man U got relegated too, some time ago ? and aren't they one of the greatest clubs in the World at the moment ?
Two great sides in two great finals. Interesting in that two England international strikers of such contrasting styles both had fine games. The powerful, non stop Mick Jones & the cool, elegant Peter Osgood. Imagine todays darlings playing on pitches like that & being tough enough to handle the tackles!
Saw this game and the replay on TV at the time. I can't remember why the Wembley pitch was in such a poor position that day. It was generally slightly more draining pitch to play on than a normal league pitch apparently [except Chelsea's which was a swamp after each winter], but there was usually plenty of bounce in it [note opening almost no-bounce goal]. Here, they have spread sand everywhere, and underneath the sand the grass was in really bad condition. Perhaps someone still knows? Of course, pitches back then were never quite the billiard tables they are today. Even clubs in the top division.
Tavy@ that was the best game of football i have seen in years! What a game. The players with no shin pads and on a muddy pitch at WEMBLEY wich was very rare! But two great teams. No diving, no running about for 5 minutes after they scored. But leeds were hated by most if not all in those years gone bye!!! And just watch the tackles leeds did at old trafford in the replay. A mean those were ilegal at least. When did yellow and red cards come into football 1972? Lol
Ah! Thanks Alex. It still seems a strange decision though one would not want to criticise pomp and pageantry...even if we're not sent to the tower for it any more. :) All things considered these were two cracking games. I'm not a fan of either club so I had not seen either of these before, but credit where it's due for producing a good final.
I understand that Wembley used to be used for major equestrian shows. There had been a major showjumping competition immediately before the match. I also believe there was no time for the turf to be relaid, so the pitch was in a very bad state. There was so much criticism that this was never allowed to happen again.
@@chelsea7802 "They scored the fewest goals, of any first division club." wrong. I can tell you immediately that have no clue what you are talking about and are making up "facts". In 69/70 season alone Leeds scored more goals than any other first division club by a long way.
Before Abramovic took over Chelsea were already one of the 5 most supported English clubs in history, had won the FA Cup x3, the League, the European Cup Winners Cup x 2, the UEFA Super Cup, the League Cup x2 and were in the Champions League.

Just to clarify , this was the Wembley game. The pitch was a mud pit as they held a horse competition a week earlier . The replay was held three weeks later because of leeds match fixtures, at old Trafford .
It was a great game at wembley. I have never saw the wembley pitch as bad as that before for a FA cup final, its always like a carpet. But the game at old trafford wasnt as good. Its great to see hard players playing good football on muddy parks again. You can see how much the old pass back rule has changed it now. But if it had been changed long before this the games would be brilliant to watch all the time!
gerald hills . They used to hold ‘ The Horse of the Year Show ‘ a big ‘ Showjumping event ‘ and various other events like that back in those days at Wembley , I remember it well . The horses hoofs with them galloping around and jumping everywhere really used to cut up the pitch . There was always complaints about it even then .
mizofan No, Osgood was also good in the return match. There was some hellacious tackling in this game, like watching the Vasquez-Marquez boxing matches.
The first match was at Wembley, where he was poor, but he was better in the replay at Old Trafford, and so scored in every round of the cup. The replay was a very dirty match, yes, and Osgood was involved in a set-to with Charlton who should have been sent off.
Yes, certainly by today's standards. The 2nd game was worse. Eddie McCreadie did a flying kick to Bremner's head in the Chelsea penalty area and the ref allowed play on, when of course it should have been a penalty and red card. Players had to cope with more dirty fouls in those days and just got on with it. Now, players dive at the least little touch or no touch at all.
The season Leeds were on course for 4 trophies. League,FA Cup,European Cup and League Cup and won none. Chelsea sorted their English cup campaign out for them and Celtic their european.
Intresting to note that Bonetti & Osgood of Chelsea , and Cooper , Hunter, Clarke , Meadley, were all in the England squad for the 1970 World Cup in Mexico
Leeds looked exhausted at Wembley. Each season they were involved in too many competitions which is probably why they were runners-up so often. In 1974 Revie told his team to go just for the league which they won easily.
To have the commentator say "firm affair" & niggly fouls" is classic example of the value of understatement ;0) What a game though, legends all. Also, I think Webb's winning goal was an OG, don't think he touched it.
Got to agree with you there, as soon as I clicked on this link and looked at the pitch I thought, wtf is that? Maybe it was a bad winter followed by a really wet spring, there has to be some reason. Then again in Scotland you get worse conditions but would not produce a pitch like that so it's still a poor showing by the FA.
Dear F.A, please could we hold on to cup replays including the semi final and final played at a separate venue? Surely your pockets are filled enough now? 😞
Somebody who knows a lot better than me might just confirm or deny this: For certain both BBC and ITV showed the match live in those days. It may well have been that ITV showed the BBC footage with their own commentary on it.
Good to see real footballers who try and attack when they get the ball, instead of being afraid to go forward so passing it backwards and sideways. Moneyball is a disgrace, I hope the the money balloon bursts in the lockdown, it ruined a working man's sport. The cup final was huge, now it's been relegated thanks to the money of the CL, disgusting...

was chelsea consider a big club in those days
Lucky enough to have been there as as a teenager , what memories
Chelsea had the support way before the modern era
Chelsea mug.
RIP Peter Bonetti 😭🙏
He recently died, what a legendary player though!
R.I.P!
Lol
This is the excellent Wembley final in the mud- highlights. And also the replay with lots of fouls, at Old Trafford- in full.
Ah! Thanks Alex. It still seems a strange decision though one would not want to criticise pomp and pageantry...even if we're not sent to the tower for it any more. :)
All things considered these were two cracking games.
I agree. It was ridiculous using a pitch, which had been used for an Equestrian Event. It was so uneven. We watched it on a Monochrome Television.
Excellent upload. Cmon the blues!. Vintage CFC side.
What a howler from Sprake for Chelsea's 1st goal
Poor Sprake. He could pull off world class saves but made the occasional awful gaffe that always happened on TV! RIP
This was the first match I ever saw on TV. I was only eight years old
Anyone here from watching leeds vs Leicester on bt?
Yep 😂
Leeds were the best team in the country at the time, fighting for the league, fa cup and european cup with about 12 players
well behind Everton in the league, Celtic too good for them, won nothing- and with more than 12 players
They had a squad of about 21 players you wally lol
@@diptastik5651 Prick.
They were not.
They were dirty.
They scored the fewest goals,
of any first division club.
@@chelsea7802 "They scored the fewest goals, of any first division club." wrong. I can tell you immediately that have no clue what you are talking about and are making up "facts". In 69/70 season alone Leeds scored more goals than any other first division club by a long way.
Old school football at its best
Why was the replay in Manchester??
When someone says that Chelsea doesn't have history, show them this.
Before Abramovic took over Chelsea were already one of the 5 most supported English clubs in history, had won the FA Cup x3, the League, the European Cup Winners Cup x 2, the UEFA Super Cup, the League Cup x2 and were in the Champions League.
Chelsea have 'History", starting from 1905.
Who said they have no history.
Stupidest saying in football. Everybody has a history - even MK Dons.
@@simonyeo3246 fun fact. stamford bridge was built for Fulham. when that fell through the stadium owner decided to start his own team to play in his stadium. so if Fulham had moved maybe there would be no cfc.
Magical times .
bonetti was world class
Yes and sadly underrated these days, maybe remembered as much for one bad day as so many superb ones.
Labone and Moore were at fault- Moore gave the ball away for the winning goal. The ref also played a big part and Ramsey's substitutions.
RIP The Cat 👍
Remember it well
Thanks mr Dempsey

Real football right there.
You mean dirty football, by Leeds.
Just to clarify , this was the Wembley game. The pitch was a mud pit as they held a horse competition a week earlier . The replay was held three weeks later because of leeds match fixtures, at old Trafford .
this is both the Wembley game and replay
It was a great game at wembley. I have never saw the wembley pitch as bad as that before for a FA cup final, its always like a carpet. But the game at old trafford wasnt as good. Its great to see hard players playing good football on muddy parks again. You can see how much the old pass back rule has changed it now. But if it had been changed long before this the games would be brilliant to watch all the time!
Great fullback play from both teams.
Cooper was outstanding. as was Bonetti, and Gray in the first match
Look at the state of the pitch !
gerald hills .
Osgood was sublime both games.
No, he was very poor in the Wembley final, whereas Bonetti was superb.
mizofan No, Osgood was also good in the return match. There was some hellacious tackling in this game, like watching the Vasquez-Marquez boxing matches.
The first match was at Wembley, where he was poor, but he was better in the replay at Old Trafford, and so scored in every round of the cup. The replay was a very dirty match, yes, and Osgood was involved in a set-to with Charlton who should have been sent off.
mizofan Multiple players should have been sent off in both games.
Great matches, but GODAWFUL refereeing. Amazing nobody got maimed out there.
The replay was played at Old Trafford, the first game was played at Wembley.
Check 2:02:58 for a high kung-fu kick! VAR rules “Bremner play acting” 😳😳
I don't think much of the 'keepers from 1970.
Fuck ...... yes.
@@EvoGoody
No ned for obscenity
@@chelsea7802 Yes c*nt. I agree.
Leeds looked exhausted at Wembley. Each season they were involved in too many competitions which is probably why they were runners-up so often. In 1974 Revie told his team to go just for the league which they won easily.
I love Chelsea ❤️
Amazing :)
Fifty years ago! Unbelievable to think that!
Look at the state of that pitch, fucking great
How many minutes of injury time and how many red cards had this game been played today?
The flamboyant and upscale southerners that were Chelsea versus the working-class, down-to-earth, middle class northerners that were Leeds United.

Football was fun then. You could get away with murder when you tackled, but that created so much space.
amazing game pity the pitch was in such a bad way..it slow the ball up a lot

To have the commentator say "firm affair" & niggly fouls" is classic example of the value of understatement ;0) What a game though, legends all. Also, I think Webb's winning goal was an OG, don't think he touched it.
Got to agree with you there, as soon as I clicked on this link and looked at the pitch I thought, wtf is that?
Maybe it was a bad winter followed by a really wet spring, there has to be some reason. Then again in Scotland you get worse conditions but would not produce a pitch like that so it's still a poor showing by the FA.
19:00 Smooth ITV professionalism at its best
I agree about ITV. Their Team, was much more fun to watch in the 1970 World Cup.
Quien aquí por the wild project con Maldini?
Dear F.A, please could we hold on to cup replays including the semi final and final played at a separate venue? Surely your pockets are filled enough now? 😞
Woops, cameraman stuff up with the 2nd goal for Chelsea.
this game was played at Old Trafford not Wembley mate
What's with the pitch? Rarely did we see that hallowed turf in such a state.

RIP The Cat.
ive never seen a Wembley pitch in such bad nick for a cup final - very unusual!
How comes it was Brian Moore commentating but the captions were BBC Action Replay?
I'm pretty sure that he was with BBC back then, he certainly did BBC radio commentaries many years ago
No, Brian Moore wasn't with the BBC then. He worked for ITV.
Somebody who knows a lot better than me might just confirm or deny this:
For certain both BBC and ITV showed the match live in those days. It may well have been that ITV showed the BBC footage with their own commentary on it.
They certainly both covered it but I'm pretty sure they had their own cameras
This is almost definitely a re-dub using BBC footage, as ITV's original commentary was lost.
Wasn't Bonetti badly injured in the first game, I seem to remember.
No, it was in the replay after a foul by Mick Jones, which is why John Dempsey was taking all the goalkicks thereafter.
Also, I'm assuming Brian Moore got himself a new watch after this game!
First match reminds me of a fifa match with all the crossbar doinks
