They stopped being Led Zeppelin when drummer Jon Bonham died. He was the heart of this band. Drum solos were integral to every album and concert. There is a Led Zeppelin tribute with Heart playing Stairway to Heaven. Bonham's son is the drummer. Fabulous!

When The Levee Breaks is one of those old blues songs that they "rocked up" really well.
People tend to have favorite versions of Zeppelin songs because the group never seemed to play a song the same way twice, so every versions has something special about it that people gravitate towards.

When they wrote it, they were about twelve to fifteen years away from the rock and roll of their youth - 1950's Chuck Berry, Duane Eddey, Eddie Cochran, and by their fourth album - 1971 - the were the undisputed Rock and Roll monster. A shout out to the music that motivated them earlier in their lives - like the song "Book of Love" that they reference in the song.

This concert at Knebworth was after the band hadn’t played for 2 years. Singer Robert Plants 5 year old son passed away while they were touring the US. They performed from (1968 to 1980) sadly when drummer Bonham passed away. Singer Plant still preforms to this day, winning music awards & gold records. Yes they may have had some stinker lives, mostly strains on Plants vocals, but they still put everything into every performance. Their concerts were 3 to 4 hours nonstop, selling out all of them & most being the only act preforming. Any songs you pick will be great, but we each have our favorites. Thank you & a whole lotta more Led Zeppelin PLEASE!

I'm loving John Bonham's powerful percussion intro! So good!!! John Paul Jones' hair is classic!... These days he looks like a Wall Street banker. This band is the best by far!!
Another by Led Zeppelin you'll love is "When the Levee Breaks". Slower beat, more bluesy... and all amazing!!

Led Zeppelin played 2 shows at the Knebworth festival in England in 1979... Sadly, it would one of the last shows Led Zeppelin played together... It came 2 years after Led Zeppelin canceled dates of their 1977 US tour after singer Robert Plant's son Karac died unexpectedly from a viral infection. After months of seclusion, mourning his loss, Robert Plant finally agreed to work on a new Led Zeppelin album in late 1978 (which became their last studio album 'In through the out door' in '79) ... However, guitarist Jimmy Page was struggling w/ he+++n addiction and was absent a lot... So, the album was composed mainly by bassist/ keyboardist John Paul Jones.
But there was concern for drummer John Bonham, whose drinking was affecting his health and well-being.
With 'In through the out door' slated for a 1979 release, Led Zeppelin announced 2 major comeback shows at Knebworth festival... Jimmy Page (guitar) had cleaned up somewhat and was in top form... Police estimated 200K people showed up for each night... Led Zeppelin triumphed and 'In through the out door' became a #1 charting album without a tour.
Plant was reluctant to tour again after he welcomed another son w/ wife Maureen in '79... Led Zeppelin only played a handful of shows in Europe between 1979 and 1980... After their disastrous 1977 US tour (the crowds were huge... but the backstage problems, drugs, alcohol and assaults made the tour problematic)... Led Zeppelin finally announced a Fall 1980 US tour.
The band rehearsed in England in preparation for the tour... but John Bonham's drinking finally got the better of him. After a disastrous rehearsal where John Bonham was too drunk to play... rehearsals were called off and John Bonham went drinking at the local bars again. He returned to Jimmy Page's house that night and passed out in one of the guest rooms... In the morning, he was found dead from alcohol asphyxiation. Without drummer John Bonham, Led Zeppelin announced quietly in late 1980 that the band would not continue.
Jimmy Page did not play guitar for 2 years because it made him sad being reminded of John Bonham.

Most concerts have opening acts, the majority of Led Zeppelin concert didn’t have any other bands playing. Their concert were 3 to 4 hours nonstop, most bands only play about 90 minutes. Led Zeppelin’s (1979) concert at Knebworth had between 210,000 to 218,000 in attendance.

It has been said; "The blues had a baby and named it Rock n Roll", This the band that made me wanna play Bass, the great bassplaying of John Paul Jones. This is also on the first 12' vinyl record I ever bought. Led Zeppelin 4 Stairway to Heaven is also that album. In Jr High I only wore led Zeppelin Shirts, I had dozens of them.
The on Stage sound and off Stage sound are way different. Often the stage is the quietest place. Our Drummer was also our main singer he needed the mix in the drum monitor to be right or he could not hear his voice.

We arrived at 8pm and there was already a huge queue, great atmosphere, everyone was so excited and happy! The tickets were sold out that night ( 100k) and they announced a second show the following week, which also sold out quickly.
I’ve still got the concert programme too!

"lonely lonely lonely lonely time"... ooh yah, ooo ooo yah, I love LED ZEP!! It's awesome to go back and check out the beginnings of this band and how they all got into music. This band is absolutely at the top of all time amazing singer/songwriter/musicianship and definitely deserve all the kudos they get!! I love Jimmy Page and if I could be as musically intelligent as he is I would be definitely going places. He is brilliant. It's one thing for musicians to copy their music and play it today but it's totally another thing to create as they did. They were definitely ahead of their time! Thanks BP!

    WHAAAAAT WHAT!!!!
My pops loved himself some Zeppelin. When I was a kid in the 80’s was after they had done all their great 70s stuff, but Robert Plante did have some solo stuff my dad would have on the Datsons tape deck. One specific song and memory was Little By Little. I just remember him always smelling like a fresh shave with his bruit cologne and singing along to LITTLE BY LITTLE. Man, if I could go back in time for just one day, I’d spend it just observing my young self enjoying life, free of worry, free of debt and just living in the moment with zero worry. Imagine if there was a world where there was no worry as a parent/adult. I took for granted way too many things over the years, but NEVER did I take for granted music. It takes you to that place in life where Nothing else mattered. If time travel exists, im almost certain music HAS TO BE involved. It’s really something how a song can put you right back. I can smell my father’s cologne at this very moment ❤

'50s nostalgia was popular in the 1970s. "Rock and Roll" was an ode to those early days of rock with lyrics like "It's been a long time since the 'Book of Love'" being a reference to a song from that era.

This song began as a jam session. John Bonham started it using the drum intro from a Little Richard song called Keep A-Knockin from 1957 and Jimmy Page added a guitar riff in the style of Chuck Berry. They were recording the session and after about 15 minutes they basically had the song finished.

If one had one they'd call and go over the person's house who got the new Muddy Waters or whom ever. They all did ,the Stones, Led Zep, the Animals, ALL of them were influenced, LOVED AMERICAN blues.Led Zep did take from a few and made it their own in a great way!....

That got so much grief and negativity over their 3rd album being so acoustic and laid back, that this was their finger in the air reply on Zeppelin IV. The drum intro was inspired by the intro in Little Richards "Keep a Knocking but You Can't Come In".

Bonham was getting frustrated trying to play 4 sticks. He took a break & started pounding this out, the others jumped in. They wrote & recorded this in 20 minutes. We got 2 great songs instead of just one.

Having played in a few bands I learned it's about where you stand on stage in regard to your amp and the others plus the monitors, There's a sweet spot for every band member to return to if the sound gets muddy while on the roam.

Robert Plant, the lead singer has been in many other bands over the years. But, most recently, he's been collaborating Blue Grass artist Alison Krauss. Everyone is amazed that such different singers can do so well together. Please Read the Letter is a great song and video. They also do a few old Zep songs in their live shows. One example is what many commenters want you to listen to....When the Levee Breaks. Plant and Krauss do it as well live at Glastonbury 2022

Great, thanks! They'd already been rockin' for at least 10 years by '79. How about looking at "Foxy Lady" from Jimi Hendrix? !!!
