- Tennessee Volunteers center fielder Drew Gilbert was ejected after leaving his position in the batter's box to curse at an umpire over a strike call during the NCAA postseason. Article: www.closecalls...
Crew Chief Billy Van Rapphorst released a postgame statement regarding Gilbert's ejection: "Tennessee #1 Drew Gilbert argued several pitches during the top of the second inning, steaming in from centerfield. To begin the next inning I talked to the player between innings, warning him to direct his comments only to his team, not our crew or the other team. He said O.K. and that he just gets excited.
"During the fifth inning following strike one, Tennessee batter Gilbert yelled an expletive, followed by another expletive as he walked out of the box and was subsequently ejected."
In other words, Gilbert had previously been warned regarding unsporting conduct. Regardless of this warning, however, a batter in college leaving the batter's box to confront the umpire about a pitch call and using profanity to do so runs afoul of two other NCAA rules: the unsportsmanlike conduct/ejections rule, and also the batter's box rule.
Gilbert was summarily ejected for cursing at the plate umpire and Frank Anderson, a pitching coach, was ejected for coming onto the field to argue with the umpires. NCAA rules state that assistant coaches (any coach that isn't the head coach is considered an assistant) can not come onto the field to dispute an umpire's ruling.
