The game is not only bad for new players, but it's also bad by Riot's fault for not matchmaking properly. They have also notoriously not punished players for intentionally ruining games. It's a tragedy.

    • @YokiraOkada
      @YokiraOkada Месяц назад +85

Not trying to defend Riot or anything but at the point where we at, when the game is almost 15 years old it's pretty much impossible to arrange a somewhat decent match making. You have brand new players, you have brand new players who are top 1000 in another MOBA, you have smurfs, you have smurfs who intentionally soft int to stay on the same elo, you have returning players who haven't played for 10 years, you have returning players who were challenger 5 years ago and on top of that you have people duo queueing, getting offroles, having too high/low mmr, some of them truly belong to this MMR, some got an unlucky/lucky win/lose streak and so on. Add things like champion/meta inflation where people might get higher than they should be, because their champion got overbuffed. Plus a lot of people one/two tricking who perform way worse when they don't get their champion.
The players skill level even within one tier of the rating is too much of a pure chaos for the system to arrange players properly.

@@YokiraOkada I mean literally every other competitive game manages to put new players with new players meanwhile League somehow can't?
I'm sorry but that's a bunch of BS. Not saying Riot can make the perfect system where only new players play vs new players and every match feels fair, but they damn well can make a infinitely better system than what we have. The issue is League was written with absolutely zero foresight about the longevity of the game and so any changes they make to league in any regard are challenging because 1 change can randomly cause the shop to bug or causes a bug with matchmaking lobbies dropping, etc. This game is literally held together by duck tape and glue. The age of the game and the playerbase being so large isn't the issue. Riot could damn well make significant improvements to the quality of matchmaking especially for new players. They just don't because League isn't a priority for Riot anymore. Their priority for a few years now has been Valorant + the MMO development + the fighting game development + TFT. They have absolutely zero interest to improve League in-game or out. The client itself has a million bugs that cause issues. The matchmaking lobby system sometimes bugs and you can't click a champ to ban or lock in and you are forced to eat a 5 min wait and -5lp. I don't want to hear people defending Riot. I'm not expecting them to magically fix everything and make the perfect system for everything. The reality is though they don't even care to make improvements or talk about systems they are looking to improve like the matchmaking system and why is that? Because they do not care about League anymore and are not looking to improve the experience, they are looking to maintain it.

'buy items, push lanes, win game' is all it gives without any other information that is considered fundamental knowledge like jungle objectives, the jungle in general, vision, other stuff that wouldn't be hard to implement at all and could easily raise the skill floor. Yeah match-making is shit (and league toxicity continues to grow by the day) but outdated and effectively-useless tutorials don't help new players either. They're all problems that need to be addressed to provide a good experience for fresh players hitting that download button for the first time.

    • @YuYuYuna_
      @YuYuYuna_ Месяц назад

@@kyleb.5560 You are beyond delusional if you think the tutorial in League isn't a serious issue. You literally learn nothing from it. Other games have intelligent bot AI that tries to dodge your shots or can try to mimic real player movement. The reason league has low new player retention isn't because of the toxicity. Sure it factors into it but it's not the main reason. New players literally have no guide, no learning tool, no way to practice core fundamentals other than playing live games where they try stuff, it doesn't work out and they don't even understand if it was good or bad or if it was their fault or if it was a teammate's misplay. They know nothing and League isn't a game where things are intuitive in the slightest. I was watching Doublelift coach this CoD youtuber who was on his team for some content creator tournament and she was having a hard time knowing what her role's job is, how her role relates and interacts with the other roles, how each stage of the game should be played out, and million other things and that's not even including ACTUALLY playing the game and knowing what your champ does, what the enemy champs do and how you want to play vs them, how you should position, etc. New players try stuff, die and then are just left to think "well I didn't think I would just get 1 shot, what do I do now?"
      - League's tutorial doesn't teach you shit
      - the Practice tool is so barebones you can't actually practice vs even half of the champions in League. There's 168 champs in the game and practice tool only has like 20 champs you can set as bots.
      - New players are taught nothing during the leveling process to 30
      - the Runes system isn't explained, they just throw it at you and say good luck figuring out what is actually good on even 1 of the 168 champs.
      - the Item system isn't explained - "when should i buy boots? when should I upgrade them?" "what items should I buy?" (the Riot suggested items half the time are going to troll you)
The game does an absolutely horrible job of onboarding new players. I go look at a game like Apex Legends and that game has a practice mode where it has literally every gun, utility, equipment, gear, etc. everything you can pick up during matches for you to test out. It has practice dummies to practice your snapping and aim. It makes perfect sense, why would you even have a practice mode in a game if you aren't going to allow players to test real scenarios they would encounter during live matches vs real players. In Heroes of the Storm you can test out literally every champ in the game for free before you buy it whereas in League you are and you are limited in refunds so if you dislike more than 3 champs you try well go F yourself now because you only get 3 refunds. Like jesus christ even f'ing Halo Infinite which has been treated like trash by the devs lets you practice vs bots that actually try to strafe and will try to mimic real player gameplay and it lets you practice aiming in a way that can translate to real games. League bots are ancient AI, you can literally stand right on top of them and they will run away. Practice tool is ancient and hasn't been improved since I started playing in 2017. Riot doesn't care.

Whenever someone new plays league, i always advice them to play the game solo instead of playing with their high level friends. That way the person gets a high chance of playing with other new players instead.
Coz by having high level players on the team, theres a bigger chance of you getting matched with other new players with high level friends as well. At least from my experience.
Your friends also making a new account wont help as the game will detect that this guy has been stomping games and will intentionally try to match you up with players with the same skill matchup. So youll be facing off against lvl 12 smurfs instead of newbies instead.
And 9 out of 10 times, their friends- who should have been teaching them the game, will only give them flat statements like "buy that" or "level that up" and "oh you shouldnt do that" or "its okay" as you die over and over again, while they're celebrating getting over 20 kills and having fun by themselves.

The problem is I didn't start with the game back when I was a teenager, but as a busy 28-year-old and through my first 50 games I was like at 27% win rate or so. Now though I made it to Silver 2, I still have problems with controlling and my APM, reaction time are low as hell.
Thank god the competitive side of me didn't give up, because I believe 95% of people would have left long ago because they already have easier choices, why would they even choose a hard game to start with. Almost no one, ever, joins a new game to get beaten up while most just wanna relax. Also for the relaxing, I am pretty sure the community toxicity, especially towards new players who are soft-int in their normal games doesn't help at all.

if they just moved everyone up a rank or two, it would easily create enough room for new players. it’s just it’s insanely hard to get to iron, and you have people that are anywhere from iron-gold mechanics wise sitting in bronze for this or that reason. but instead of fixing matchmaking they just tweak champs and keep breaking them.

To be fair, Roit should have more info on making new players start playing against bots for a while. Most of the time I am being placed in match where players' skill exceeds mine by a milestone and even though I'm midlaner I almost never get a change to shine with lots of kills or massive damage dealt (Compared to others). If that happens then I'm automatically thrown into lot harder game next time. I just got my rank and placed iron 2 but I don't even know what half of the champions in this game does... try to explain that to my teammates who expect me to know every single champion and item in the game, always land all my skill shots, keep decent farm pace while ganking lanes and who knows what. Half of the players in iron bracket are either smurffs or old veterans that are level +100 but for some reason have not managed to climb out of iron, so the ranked is pretty merciless place for newcomers.

There are 2 issues for new players, bad matchmaking (why are we getting matched against masters when none of us are even close to masters and we got 1 guy with a lvl 1 account?) and also the abundance of smurfs, back when I started playing in season 7, smurfing wasn't as big of an issue and if you had a new account or played with someone with a new account you would get matched against equally inexperienced players, but now, even if you don't get matched against masters players in normals or arams you are getting matched against obvious smurfs and you can't expect a player to want to get their ass whooped for 500 games until they learn how to play better

League gives access to custom mode, coop vs ai and practice tool and even arams, wchich are more "forgiving" in a way than summoner's rift. Before I started playing drafts I've played at least 30 custom games with my friend in order to understand mechanics, champions, roles and still think that was not enough. Does game explain anything to new player? Obviously not, tutorial is fucking hilarious and this is one thing that Riot has to improve if they want new players not burn out after few first games. If I had nobody to explain game to me and I would have went 2/19 in first game and had teammates who wished me death I would just uninstall this shit

Do you meet the same pattern in real game? Of course not. Human at least have some instinct of self-preservation. In all actuality it sucks for old players as well. In autumn last year I stopped playing SR altogether after a 10-matches loss streak (a week+ worth of my "relaxation" games) after I witnessed ever since September the matchmaking algorithm being utterly butchered. One match I even had a Master player on my team and the opposing one got brutalised nonstop (I played normals exclusively, prior to the summer though the matches were fine). Since them I played ARAM, solely for getting the "free" Hextech chests.
And when the time for Vanguard came about I had about 2 more chests to grind out...well, I decided to call it quits then - even the idea of ARAM was too insufferable for me to take a step into. I won't be returning to LoL, the game is simply no fun - either I sign up to brutally unfair matches or I sign up to not being able to pick my champ, no thank you! Not to mention - since switching to Linux, my PC is less of a monster to deal with, I ain't going back to Windows even if by some miracle Riot would turn LoL into a magical experience as Vanguard is the condition to play.
For those meaning to write "Yet here you are"...I was merely looking for interesting videos in the recommended column - the only LoL videos I watch nowadays are the sub-20 minutes Pink Ward Shaco dailies, out of habit.

It's the community that demands you be good at your champ, but doesn't want to give you the time to learn.

This is not a League of Legends only problem though. It's every single online multiplayer game out there, and especially those where gold income and snowballing is a thing. I remember starting league in 2010, I played bot games far into being level 30 [max rank at that moment] and only much later went into my first pvp match. It went horrible. I was used to carrying games with Janna Tornado's against bots that did not move away from them, not actual brains dodging skillshots.
And like every game that's been out a long time, people improve. Diamond in 2010 is probably silver/gold in 2024.

i am someone who started playing a week ago) who would like to play jungle and thinks the character that feels best is riven this game is much work. i literally cant play jungle and don't get what characters to play where. I like the idea of mid but i don't know when to roam and all the ranged characters just make it hell for me i feel like i need to practice against bots just to get the idea of the game. // i think i like the game but I'm actually actively avoiding the game

If youre trying to do Jng, you wont really learn much in bot games as there is no competition vs bots in the jng. I do suggest doing draft pick over quickplay so you can ban champs you dont particularly care to see or play against and you actually set your role for it instead of being thrown in a lobby for a free for all for a position.

Idk i came back after 2 years into the game. Took Vel'koz since i like playing him on top. lost the first 2 games only performing rather average. Suddenly got a pentakill in the third because my opponents walked straight into my beam. Then after they respawned i immediatly got another penta kill because the previous one gave me A LOT of gold for a huge power spike, and they came at me one by one... . Suddenly i get a bunch of hate and get called a smurf. I didnt even know wtf a smurf was. Then i got downvoted by everyone in the team, even my own side because they didnt believe i didnt know what a smurf was and riot timed out because of it. So yeah, the toxicity was at an all time high and i'd seen enough league for a while. Haven't logged in for years.

The problem with lol is quite simply that it relies too much on teamwork. You could be the best player in the game if your teammates have bronze player iq you can't win. You play tank? Well you need your adc to participate in team battle (which most likely won't happen because the low iq adc is in the jungle farming), you play adc? Same deal you're gonna get one shot if your tank and support don't help. You get a good teammates as often as a full moon.

The guy is so chill, I respect that. So unfortunate he encountered that Bel Veth, she was super toxic. I remember one time I had to create a new profile to play with my friends on other server, so I had to walk through the beginners' queue. Mark my words: beginners and vs.-bot players are the most enjoyable League community ever. I felt so guilty playing among them after a few hundred hours on my main account, so I picked only supports-enchanters or the like, so I couldn't impact much. My favorite pick was full-heal Moonstone Ezreal, it was the pre-rework Moonstone, so every time I landed a Q, it would do little damage but heal my adc a bit. Another funny thing is to pick Yuumi and let the beginner pilot you, supporting even their bad decisions.
The bottom line is, guys, be nicer to each other, especially with the beginners, they still remember what it's like to play for fun.

Yesterday I had a new player in my game. I only learned they were a new player AFTER the game was already over and I had to do a lil bit of looking at them and their DUO who is most definitely a smurf playing with them.
I felt really bad afterwards because my friend and I should NOT be getting matched up with new players. So I thought they just played bad and fed early and then proceeded to troll and grief the game which is the one thing that frustrates me. When in reality, they literally don't know the game enough to know how to try. I didn't say anything bad, I'm not that type of asshole. I just pinged a lot watching them literally sit around and do nothing.
In the end this is Riot and partly the duo's fault. Not me being an asshole, that's on me. But a new player having this kind of experience. Before our game which was a travesty. Them and their duo had a massive winning streak because the duo was smurfing his brains out. This of course kept pushing their MMR higher and higher. So now even if the person decided to play solo their MMR is going to be wildly inflated.
And the real tragedy in all of this is that these are just 2 people that are friends and wanted to play together. And as it stands right now if that duo played with them on not a smurf account. It still ruins the new player's game experience. The only way for that new player to be able to play with their friend and not have their or other people's game experience ruined, is to just play solo for a long while to try to learn this game the hardest way possible. Just figuring all of the shit out on your own and having to bring up the wiki, watch videos, and talk with moderately knowledgeable friends just to get enough game understanding to just know how to play the game ENOUGH.
They'd probably still feed. But at least they would have enough knowledge to know how to TRY.
