that scene in the 6th sense when toni collette and hjo are in the car gets me every time, the bee 😭 and then hit with that shocking image, so effective, fantastic movie
I had a film professor make fun of me for liking Signs once, so it's very validating to see you rank it at the top of your list lol. Thanks as always for the great content!
That’s too bad. Signs is very good. It’s difficult to get over the aliens traveling to a water planet when water is NOT their thing. But the movie is good enough to just let it be
I went to film school and it is overwhelmingly pretentious. It seem like anything that isn’t “The Matrix” that was commercially successful is shit to a film professor. Don’t let anyone ever make you feel bad for liking whatever films you like. Your opinion is valid!
Wow that professor sounds awful at his job. They should be encouraging thought and creativity. That kind of response shuts down confidence and individual thinking .
@@MarioLanzas. I wrote a paper about the movie and he emailed me to say that M Night fell off after The 6th Sense and that his other movies weren't worth analyzing. He didn't give me a bad score or anything, but he never emailed back responses for papers. Guy just hated the movie enough to go out of his way to tell me lol
the second twist makes sense. the first twist makes 0 sense unless u look at the deleted scenes. however deleted scenes arent canon so it just makes no sense
For me, it was the 4th M. Night film released and by then we were getting used to his twists. So when I watched this film, I picked the twists pretty early and as a consequence, it took me out of the movie and find it predictable.

@@spookyastronauts wow just finished The Happening and I really did not like this movie. Creepy Mrs Jones her creepy house and doll were cool. Will not watch it again or be recommending it to anyone
The Happening was made during 90s or early 2000s...the hot topic back then was "global warming and bees are in the verge of extinctions" ...Mr. Shyamalan was doing his part to bring awareness to this topic...without bees human beings will suffer. so not sure why people are so harsh when Marvel and DC makes movies with ridiculous storyline yet only this man gets the scrutiny like never seen before..
I got to see The Sixth Sense without having any idea of the twist. I'm always thankful for that, because I couldn't believe it. I think it gets taken for granted. It's in my top 10 movies to this day.

I love this video... I agree with you so much - Many of us discard these films in the back of our mind, but truthfully they all have an incredibly considered tone. I saw both the village and the happening in the cinema - the village had scenes that absolutely got me going, the confrontation with the monster was pure hell for me as hell in my youth we grew up by a small wood where there had been a few 5u1c1des and was protected by a local farmer, we used to visit it for dares and it was ALWAYS a total trip. The happening's tone actually disturbed me - I'd begun studying film and I sort of found myself spiralling as to why such a dark concept, and dark imagery, would be given such a weird and lazy feeling execution. It STILL feels nightmarish. I saw sixth sense on VHS rental, and I used to lay awake REPEATEDLY going for a pee because I desperately didn't want to awake in the night with a full bladder because of this film. THIS film during my pubescent years was the thing that followed me up the stairs in the dark. On my own personal journey, the only things that have hit harder are probably Event Horizon and Poltergeist 2 (in context - since those mentioned I've been on some terrible deep dives that have been hard work).
Would put Unbreakable higher than The Village, but glad you ranked The Village so high. It's really an underrated movie! Beautiful movie, great actors, and the music..!

I just watched Old for the first time recently and I agree with you take on it. I have not seen his trilogy yet but I would bet The Sixth Sense would also be my number one.
I'm honestly so glad you like The Village. I'm puzzled why anyone hates it so much, it's at least decent, and I find it beautiful, creepy, and has everything. I'd honestly rank them about the same as you, except I feel fonder about Lady in the Water, I'd probably bump that one up one. Great Video Emma! Here's My Ranking: 1. Split 2. The Sixth Sense 3. Signs 4. The Visit 5. Old 6. Unbreakable 7. The Village 8. The Happening 9. Glass 10. Wide Awake 11. After Earth 12. Lady In The Water 13. The Last Airbender
I've not seen all of Shymalan's movies. Only have seen Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, and Split and Unbreakable is by far my favorite! I love superhero movies and origin stories and there's something about it to me that's always made it feel a bit more rewatchable for me than the Sixth Sense.
great ranking and in majority mine covers yours (I think), but just to confirm, here it is (from the best to the worst). I haven't seen Old and Servant yet, so (obviously )they're not included. 1. The 6th sense (jaw dropping genius) 2. Signs (aliens, man) 3. The Village (I liked the twist a lot) 4. The Visit (the old, insane people creep me out big time) 5. Split (James, man) 6. Wayward Pines (1st season only. 2nd was bleh) 7. Unbreakable (Bruce was not my man in this one) 8. Glass (Sarah Paulson's character agenda was not convincing for me) 9. Lady in the water (so so many confused people with awkward mimics. And they just STARE at this poor gal... in the shower... What is happening?) and as we speak: 10. Happening (wind and hot dogs man. And Mark Wahlberg terrified nostrils..Tas all, tas the movie..) Cheers Emma! Looking forward for your next video
I loved The Visit! Me and two friends went to watch it at the cinema because we had free tickets. We thought it would be baaaaad but we all loved it ! We were laughing the whole way through but there were these tense moment that scared the shit out of us (Like the one where they run beneath the house). Its an amazing experience and, if you haven't watched it, don't take it too seriously and you will have a good time!
My top 3 M. Night movies are 1. Split 2. The Visit. 3. The Sixth Sense I did want to ask: is there a reason Devil was omitted from your list? Thanks for all the wonderful content!
Well, I know my top ten list won't be too popular, but sometimes it just boils down to how well the film is made and if one is in the right stage of mind. I will admit that I have not seen "Old" or "Servant" and I only saw one season of "Wayward Pines", so I didn't want to include them in the list. So here's my list from ten to one: 10. LADY IN THE WATER (or as I think of it, M. Night's narcissistic film) 9. THE HAPPENING (or how to get a bad performance out of Mark Wahlberg) 8. GLASS (only makes sense when you see the full trilogy) 7. UNBREAKABLE (M. Night's follow-up to "The Sixth Sense" was destined to have a lesser impact) 6. THE VISIT (the twist was simplistic, but I was fooled looking for something more complex) 5. THE SIXTH SENSE (the twist got me, though I still feel the story was all to set it up) 4. DEVIL (I know M. Night only wrote the story, but it's a solid supernatural thriller) 3. SPLIT (a roller-coaster of suspense and excellent acting) 2. SIGNS (M. Night's best looking film, perfect example of "less is more" horror) 1. THE VILLAGE (I loved the story and the characters. The first twist was a shock, leading to the predictable second to bring the story home)
Emma Ranks. (An Aussie Ragamuffin Rapper.) Thanks for the M. Night rankings I've been re-watching him recently myself. I think The Village is my favorite. But Split is rising! And if I knew you in person I wouldn't say anything... because great mimes think alike!
The guy is a hack legend by now. For me, his best film is Unbreakable. Then comes Sixth Sense, Signs, Spilt and Devil (which is decent). The rest I don't care for but they do have some good moments here and there. The Happening works well if you watch it as a comedy. Haven't seen Servant yet, seems good.
I am in a minority who saw the "Malcolm is a ghost" twist in the Sixth Sense but held my breath until the end for when Cole finally tells his mother. Her reaction made me want to cheer, because that was the payoff I needed. Cole wouldn't be dealing with his gift/curse/burden alone...
Unbreakable is my favorite of all MNS movies with Signs second and Sixth Sense 3rd. Thanks Emma. Saw 6th Sense at the theater on original release with no idea. Same with Signs and Unbreakable. Here’s to 100k.
Definitely agree on the first spot! It is one of my favorite movies of all time. I still have to watch a couple of his, but I have to think about it...THe village , Split and The visit are definitely the ones that follow the first place. But I'm not sure the order really. I need to check out The servant also!
Even in the films of his I don't like he ALWAYS has some interesting filmmaking going on. The shot selection and editing is always purposeful. And when he collaborates with James Newton Howard he gets some of his best soundtracks as well. So even when it sounds like the writing isn't quite there, I'm always going to check out his films for his little filmmaking idiosyncrasies. Also Congrats on 90k!!!!
Lady in the Water is a masterpiece. Not only his best and most creative work, but it obviously took way longer to write than any of his other stories. Paul Giamatti alone makes it worth the price of entry.
The sixth sense , the village and signs are my top 3 - and I find it hard to decide which is the top 1 as I loved them all differently and really got me into films more when I was young
I hate The Village and Lady in the Water with a passion...but you liking The Village reminded me how my beloved late mother loved it and my heart melted. Split got to be my favorite of M. Night´s movies, followed by Unbreakable. The Happening is just embarrasing so I am with Mark with this!
Fun fact:: The Happening was made in the late 90s or early 2000s...the hot topic back then was "global warming and bees are in the verge of extinctions" ...Mr. Shyamalan was doing his part to bring awareness to this topic...without bees human beings will suffer. so not sure why people are so harsh when Marvel and DC makes movies with ridiculous storyline yet only this man gets the scrutiny like never seen before.. BTW...Marky Mark is not actor to me! He sucks!
I love m night. I live near a living museum that exactly resembles the village. I would have out it at number 2. The twist was shocking to me loved it unexpected
Much love to you Emma. I love your videos. I just watched coherence and Gerald’s game thanks to you! I’m gonna re watch the sixth sense and signs. But I gotta say, the happening is closer to the top for me, same with lady in the water. I would have moved all the unbreakable movies to the bottom. I gotta check out Servant!! Thank you so much Emma
Oh interesting, I had no idea Shymalan was involved with the Wayward Pines series! I read that trilogy for some daft fun last year, and although I didn't love it, I'm definitely intrigued by the show despite its cancellation. I also got Twin Peaks vibes from it! As for TV though, still holding off on Servant for now until I can cope with it a bit better :) Of the films I've seen, my ranking would probably be: 1. Signs (I've seen it so many times) 2. The Sixth Sense 3. Split 4. The Visit 5. The Village I'm DYING to see Unbreakable though!
Signs is the most underrated Shyamalan films. The character building is amazing. The tension is palpable. It's just the ending that stinks. Probably my number two after The Sixth Sense as well.
Signs might be my favorite movie of all time. Watching it many times over the years has been like peeling an onion, with new layers discovered each time. And for me, the biggest discovery was that it really isn't about aliens, it is about demons. That realization opened up the movie in new ways. The Happening is much better in black and white. Just turn down the color on your TV, and it has much more context and relevance. The vague "thing" that just happens reminds me of The Birds in some ways. And I like the idea that while people will try to pin an explanation on everything, some things just happen for no good reason. The Village is good, but I have to admit that I guessed the end as soon as I saw the trailer, before the movie was released. 😁
Unique is definitely a word you associate with his narratives, there are some great movies in his catalogue and some not so great but when he hits his stride boy does he hit it
i've been in the US since 2004 and really enjoyed the village (the ending had me gagging & gooped), signs, & the 6th sense (the twist had me SHOOKETH)... and had no idea they're his movies lmaaaoo that said, i think now i'd enjoy his movies more if i didn't know they're his lmao
I always loved how you explain it with detail but still leave it vague and spoiler free!

Great list! I love that you enjoy The Village too. That's a shame about Old, seems like a solid premise for a horror movie.
great ranking and in majority mine covers yours (I think), but just to confirm, here it is (from the best to the worst). I haven't seen Old and Servant yet, so (obviously )they're not included.
1. The 6th sense (jaw dropping genius)
2. Signs (aliens, man)
3. The Village (I liked the twist a lot)
4. The Visit (the old, insane people creep me out big time)
5. Split (James, man)
6. Wayward Pines (1st season only. 2nd was bleh)
7. Unbreakable (Bruce was not my man in this one)
8. Glass (Sarah Paulson's character agenda was not convincing for me)
9. Lady in the water (so so many confused people with awkward mimics. And they just STARE at this poor gal... in the shower... What is happening?)
and as we speak:
10. Happening (wind and hot dogs man. And Mark Wahlberg terrified nostrils..Tas all, tas the movie..)
Cheers Emma!
Split 2. The Visit. 3. The Sixth Sense
I did want to ask: is there a reason Devil was omitted from your list? Thanks for all the wonderful content!
Well, I know my top ten list won't be too popular, but sometimes it just boils down to how well the film is made and if one is in the right stage of mind. I will admit that I have not seen "Old" or "Servant" and I only saw one season of "Wayward Pines", so I didn't want to include them in the list. So here's my list from ten to one:
10. LADY IN THE WATER (or as I think of it, M. Night's narcissistic film)
9. THE HAPPENING (or how to get a bad performance out of Mark Wahlberg)
8. GLASS (only makes sense when you see the full trilogy)
7. UNBREAKABLE (M. Night's follow-up to "The Sixth Sense" was destined to have a lesser impact)
6. THE VISIT (the twist was simplistic, but I was fooled looking for something more complex)
5. THE SIXTH SENSE (the twist got me, though I still feel the story was all to set it up)
4. DEVIL (I know M. Night only wrote the story, but it's a solid supernatural thriller)
3. SPLIT (a roller-coaster of suspense and excellent acting)
2. SIGNS (M. Night's best looking film, perfect example of "less is more" horror)
Was recommended to your channel by Marianna from Impression Blend. Enjoying your reviews. Especially this one. I am now a subscriber.
Thanks I love Marianna!
Hack legend is a perfect description 😅
I am in a minority who saw the "Malcolm is a ghost" twist in the Sixth Sense but held my breath until the end for when Cole finally tells his mother. Her reaction made me want to cheer, because that was the payoff I needed. Cole wouldn't be dealing with his gift/curse/burden alone...
Unbreakable is my favorite of all MNS movies with Signs second and Sixth Sense 3rd. Thanks Emma. Saw 6th Sense at the theater on original release with no idea. Same with Signs and Unbreakable. Here’s to 100k.
I STILL adore The Village. I watched it in the theater and was horrified, saddened and deeply impressed. I gotta revisit The Sixth Sense!
Definitely agree on the first spot! It is one of my favorite movies of all time. I still have to watch a couple of his, but I have to think about it...THe village , Split and The visit are definitely the ones that follow the first place. But I'm not sure the order really. I need to check out The servant also!
Unbreakable is his best film in my view.
Can't wait to see how you rank his films 🙂
The Happening is so much fun. I love that movie. Hilarious
Oh interesting, I had no idea Shymalan was involved with the Wayward Pines series! I read that trilogy for some daft fun last year, and although I didn't love it, I'm definitely intrigued by the show despite its cancellation. I also got Twin Peaks vibes from it! As for TV though, still holding off on Servant for now until I can cope with it a bit better :)
Of the films I've seen, my ranking would probably be:
1. Signs (I've seen it so many times)
2. The Sixth Sense
3. Split
4. The Visit
5. The Village
I'm DYING to see Unbreakable though!
Signs is the most underrated Shyamalan films. The character building is amazing. The tension is palpable. It's just the ending that stinks. Probably my number two after The Sixth Sense as well.
Will you make a top 5 horror directors list?
I feel like I’m the person who loved Old. I heard so many terrible things I went into it thinking that I’d hate it but I really enjoyed it
Unique is definitely a word you associate with his narratives, there are some great movies in his catalogue and some not so great but when he hits his stride boy does he hit it
i've been in the US since 2004 and really enjoyed the village (the ending had me gagging & gooped), signs, & the 6th sense (the twist had me SHOOKETH)... and had no idea they're his movies lmaaaoo that said, i think now i'd enjoy his movies more if i didn't know they're his lmao
What about Devil??
I am backed logged with your videos and just saw this today.
Do David Lynch! Blue Velvet is GREAT!!!
I might be the only person who has never seen the sixth Sense but I love signs and split
