    Great information! I would add the cost of the caution label to that example as well any potential additives or coloring. When factoring the rest of the price please consider your OVERHEAD COSTS. This includes your labor, electricity, shipping fees, event fees, cost of gas to events, shop rent, etc.
    Once you have your product COST just as described in the video, you will then add your LABOR AND OVERHEAD COST PER PIECE...this is your TRUE COST> multiply this by 4 and you have your Retail Price....multiply the TRUE PRICE by 3 and you have your WHOLESALE COST 😉

    • @StandleyHandcrafted
      @StandleyHandcrafted  6 лет назад +18

      I forgot to add in the caution label on this one.
      As for the overhead costs such as electricity, gas to the markets, shipping to customers, I left off those other costs you mentioned intentionally for this one because I wanted to show JUST the candle itself.
      The remaining costs are hard to determine for everyone and will fluctuate quite a bit depending on each individuals set up, location, house size, additional products aside from candles, etc.

  • @samanthahardy9903
    @samanthahardy9903 5 лет назад

    I used to add up the cost of all materials (wax, wicks, jars/moulds,fragrance,dyes), then add the cost of labels and packaging. Then I divided by the number of candles I made from all the materials. I forgot to factor in the time it took to make them because I just enjoyed making them. I didn't make much of a profit either. When I start again I will remember to factor in my time plus shipping, labeling and packaging as well as I want to develop a business and not just a hobby.

    Hello Jeff! Always, thank you. I am working the math for 1 formulation and would like you to inform me if I am accurate regarding the wax and FO (shipping is included):
    10oz net product with 9.2oz wax and 0.8oz FO (do I calculate wax based on amount I plan to use or based on the net product weight?)
    Wax Price 49.66/10LB = 4.97LB = 0.31oz = $3.10 per candle
    Can this be broken down further like your wax example? How do I calculate this when 1LB will only fill 1 candle and 6oz of another?
    FO Price 45.67/16oz = 2.85oz per oz
    Can this be broken down further similar to your example as well?

    Hi Jeff, I was wondering, you say to divide the shipping equally among all the items that I order in one shipment. What if I order a bag of wax, containers, lids, and 6 different bottles of fragrance. Do I count each bottle of fragrance as an individual item, so I would divide the shipping by 9 items, or do I group all the fragrances together as one item, so then I would divide the shipping by 4 items. Depending which way I do this it makes a huge difference on how much my candles costs.

    My huge question is.. when buying say half of this order and paying a higher price per item (working on bulk =cheaper) how do you keep your prices consistant? Because each order will give you a different total cost per candle depending on what you ordered in quantities. Obviously its to your advantage to order larger quantities and make the total cost less, but for those of us who are too small to buy big, do we simply endure smaller profits until we grow big enough to buy in huge bulk, or do we price ourselves out of the market/under a good profit margin until we suceed - which make it harder to suceed!?

    • @StandleyHandcrafted
      @StandleyHandcrafted  4 года назад

      You would fill Each glass jelly jar to just under 6oz.
      Since wax is more dense than water, it has more volume to fill the jars. 16oz of wax + about 1.2-1.6oz of oil you end up with ~17.5oz of total liquid split three ways equaling ~5.8oz

    • @StandleyHandcrafted
      @StandleyHandcrafted  4 года назад +1

      The wick stickers could of been figured in but people use all sorts of things like glue, dots, red RTV so I left it off. It might be a penny.
      As for electric I left that off on purpose as this is just the candle cost itself.
      Electric would be figured out by the person making them as those prices wound be all over the place and no way to really narrow it down to an average for everyone.

    Hi
    Your videos are great. Please can u let me know why the candle creates a tunneling while burning?
    There is so much wax on the sides and it just burns down through the middle. How can i prevent this
    Plz help

    • @StandleyHandcrafted
      @StandleyHandcrafted  6 лет назад +1

      Tunneling usually happens from a wick that is too small, you might wick up.
      The second is caused when a candle doesn't get to full melt pool the first time it's lit. If the flame is blown out too soon, it will continue to burn at that same pool.

    • @aandmscentz
      @aandmscentz 6 лет назад +1

      Standley Handcrafted that is good to know. I think I may have blown my candles out to soon on a few wick testing. Cause when I wicked up that wick was too big

      Lubna Shaheen To get a full melt pool after tunneling you will want to dig the candle down so the top is flat again and relight then wait for the full melt pool to develop again.

    I am confused about the math for the wax, you can get 3 - 8oz jars per lb but theres only 16ounces in a pound. Are you factoring in the subtraction of the amount of wax because of the fragrance oils added? TIA

    • @StandleyHandcrafted
      @StandleyHandcrafted  3 года назад +1

      The 8oz jar actually only holds around 6oz of wax and oil. So the total weight ends up being 17.6oz / 3 which equals 5.86oz in each candle.

    Thank you for your detailed and excellent advice. I was interested why you wouldn't have factored energy costs for your gas and electricity into your spreadsheet. I suppose you could say the same about your fuel costs and depreciation for the use of your car to get a true and highly detailed unit cost for your product.

    • @StandleyHandcrafted
      @StandleyHandcrafted  6 лет назад

      For this video I wanted to keep the cost to just the candle itself since those other costs will be very different for each individual and their added costs at home and shows.
      At some point I will have to come up with those costs as well for the entire business because they definitely add up as well and play a huge factor in the business.

    Ok so I bought the Igi6006 wax and it had no scent throw. I feel like something was wrong with the batch because I normally use a wax that is I think 48 soy and 52 paraffin and have excellent scent throw but I was assuming that’s the igi would be stronger. So what could have made it react this way. I used 10% oil

    This might be a dumb question but here I go anyway . . . Is it necessary to put a lid on the candles, is there any options to not put lids? I have a certain type of jar in mind but don't think there's a candle lid for it and afraid of the scent fading away.
    I'm truly thinking about getting into the candle business but also afraid it's not profitable enough. Just started doing my research and Thank you Sir so much for this information.

    Hi Jeff, I am new to your channel and to candlemaking and you have been a wealth of knowledge!! I do have a question regarding your math for the fragrance oil. I dont understand how you got $1.40 per oz. Maybe it's my math that is wrong lol. I'm having a really hard time calculating the breakdown per candle.

    • @StandleyHandcrafted
      @StandleyHandcrafted  3 года назад

      Dependig on how much oil you buy, I broke it down basically per ounce and I add around 1.1 - 1.3oz per pound of wax. So a $21 16oz bottle of oil would be $1.37 for 1oz

    I have a question. How do y'all handle customer complaints (if you guys have had any)?

    • @StandleyHandcrafted
      @StandleyHandcrafted  6 лет назад +6

      I've been lucky not to of had many at all but just last week I had a shipping issue that I had to take care of for a customer.
      I sent a package a different way than I normally do and it took too long to get there with no tracking number. I apologized to the customer, sent a replacement and refunded their payment. She didn't ask for the refund but I figured it was only fair since she had to wait so long.
      I always try to take care of the customer no matter what. I'd want them happy with the product and if I can help that I would. Luckily I haven't had any real issues this far.
      I did make an entire batch when I first started that had no scent throw at all! Thankfully they were all sold to coworkers that I could easily replace a few days later.
      I would always ask them a few questions to see if the problem is the product itself or if maybe they were doing something that aided in the problem like improper lighting or burning.

      Hello Donnetta, I just saw someone else with the same question.
      What he did was to determine the cost of the fragrance oil for a 16oz candle, considering that he does 10% of fragrance oil for the candle (it's 1.6oz of fragrance oil). So for 1.6oz of fragrance oil used at a cost of $1.4 dlls per oz (1.6*1.4) he gets the $2.24 dlls.
      Hope it helped you
