They are not extreme for that area. It is snowy for the most part of the year. If they don't offer the service when it snows then they won't offer it for about 6-7 months every year.
I was born in there Johnson USAF Base 1959. My dad was stationed there. We went back 1965 . I went to the base elementary school. I will never forget how beautiful it was as well as the open air fish market. I would love to go back someday.
Hello from Germany, I watched your great video today and I'm thrilled. Because it immediately give me a tip about what I would do when I was in Sapporo for four weeks next year for work. I will definitely take this train ride and go to Cape Soya . Thanks for this video and kind regards from the German Alps .
Great video, Kuga-san! A part of Japan not usually seen, and I appreciate the geographical references - I knew that the tip of Hokkaido was just across from Sakhalin Island, but didn’t know it was *that* close. Beautiful backcountry, until you get near the sea - then it’s rather forbidding, even ominous. Reminds me of the Aleutian Islands off of Alaska. The deer are worth the two minutes behind schedule ❤️😁!
Hi. Happy to see you back. I always enjoy watching your videos. Thank you for taking us long your journey's. Stay safe and healthy. Love from Montreal,Quebec. 🥰
What a wonderful trip, arigatou gozaimasu! I really enjoy your humour, like the prospect of tasting the snow, then "Nah, I'm good", it made me chuckle. :)
A person doesn't realize how loud and fatiguing deisel engine noise is, until it is present in a setting where we're not expecting it. My goodness, five and a half hours of that would have given me an absolutely *whanging* headache.
You are a blessed guy. Now I know exactly how to visit Cape Soya by train and bus in one day. Next trip to Japan I'll try to follow your steps. Thank you.
i would love to see sakhalin! sakhalin was the origin place of a now extinct breed of sled dog. the sakhalin husky. the sakhalin husky dogs were the real life eight below dogs. there is a more historically accurate japanese film about them and of course there's the paul walker film.
I like what I've seen of Hokkaido. It looks a lot like where I live, except with trains, ferries, and taller buildings (although I'm just a tiny bit farther north than Cape Soya at 45°39' N).
Thanks so much for the video Kuga-san. I think I will need to devote at least a year to follow in your footsteps. Unbelievable amount of snow! So awesome! ♥️✌️🙏
Deer Deer .. No I-Deer.. yes saw them scampering. So much beautiful snow makes the scenery awesome. Loved the post with the words MAY PEACE PREVAIL ON EARTH. Pity the neighbors across the ocean don't believe in it. Thanks for such an informative journey to the north. Bushyboy Oz.
I lived in Sapporo for 15 years and I absolutely love Sapporo 💕. God the amount of times I have been to this Station , bringing back so many lovely memories now.
I live in Wales (UK) and we've had almost no snow thus far. I adore your videos, keep them coming, they'll help with my upcoming plans to visit your intriguing country.
I really want to visit Hokkaido in winter. Hopefully by next year Japan will reopen to individual travelers again. It's a lifelong dream I want to make come true.
Enjoyed this video. Quite a lot of snow. I live in Calgary, Alberta (Latitude DMS: 51°8'21.45"N) and this winter we didn't get a great deal of snow at all. However, it did hit lows of -32C.
I live in Kansas and we (at least the town I live in) don't get much snow at all, especially around Christmas when I most want it. We used to, but that was a long time ago. I miss snow, since it's my favorite after rain.
Australia. I really enjoyed catching that train in January. There was a later train so I got into Wakkanai after dark in winter using a Japan Rail Pass. The story about the train stopping for the school child was delightful too. I'd like to get to Cape Soya too! Thank for sharing.
Great train trip!..So much snow..😊. Its amazing to see from the train..Thank you for uploading this video..so inspire to do the same trip..😊. I enjoyed this video..😊
Love this video. I made the same trip about 4 years ago in the Spring. I'm hoping to get back soon to make the trip in the Winter. Wakkanai and Cape Soya is a beautiful area. I highly recommend taking the ferry out to Rebun and Rishiri islands. Thank you for your videos.
Another incredible video! Thank you so much! I appreciate all the information you share. Makes me feel like I am there in person. I am thankful RUclips put you in my suggested feed last year. I have been following your every adventure since that day. 😍😍😍 I am an old lady and do not get to travel any longer so thank you for including me in your travels... I live north of Seattle Washington USA
A 7-day pass sounds terrific and affordable. Yes, it is "bare bones" but you can hop out and spend a day sightseeing and shopping then, when you tire of it, jump back on a train for another stop. This is sort of like the Eurrail Pass in Europe, if they still have it. Very tourist-friendly.
With a colour scheme like that they should've called it the EVA-01. I visited Cape Soya on my first trip to Japan, safe to say I was not prepared for the wind. Had to lean the motorbike into it (crosswind all the way from Esashi) and by the time I reached Wakkanai I couldn't stop shaking I was that cold, not what I was expecting in late spring/early summer.
The nature in northern Japan looks so much like Sweden. The architecture is very different, though. Although I saw some houses with pitched roof that kind of looked a bit like Swedish houses as well. :)
Huh, the 45th parallel is a bit south of where I live...I have to drive 40 minutes. But I am a member of the 45-90 club thanks to visiting a farm field in rural Wisconsin USA. Deer usually don't move much in heavy snow, they prefer to hole up and take a nap. Thanks for taking us on your travels!
It’s funny that you posted this video today because I was literally thinking about this exact trip yesterday haha. I’ve always wanted to visit Hokkaido for some reason
omg I miss Hokkaido so much!! I haven't been to Wakkanai tho, hopefully when the border opens I'll be able to ride the train and enjoy beautiful Cape Soya!

This exact trip has been on my to-do list for years. I am so happy right now to see this. Can't wait to do it myself soon
You have such dedication to your work on this channel. I really admire it. Please keep doing what you're doing. Really enjoying the content!
I was there! I tried from falling snow to taste when I reached the station. I loved it. Im coming back Jan 15, 2023. 💚💚💚🌍
I think, I would never be to Japan so thank you very much for taking me with you 👏🥰
Wow that's a lot of snow. I'm impressed from the service under these extreme weather conditions. Well done. JR is a great example ☺️
They are not extreme for that area. It is snowy for the most part of the year. If they don't offer the service when it snows then they won't offer it for about 6-7 months every year.
I lived in Hokkaido and they deal with snow and ice beautifully. Sapporo gets something over 30 feet of snow each year.
@@Geoplanetjane They know how to live with it!

Wonderful trip! I agree with the monument on Cape Soya 'May peace prevail upon the Earth'. I always enjoy your trips and learn so much.

That was a very nice ride, thank you. I enjoyed hearing the diesel engine accelerating.
Thank you

Great video, I've been to Asahikawa many times, but never further north. It was nice to see.
Watching from Canada! Thanks for giving the latitude reference for Montreal, really helped picture how far north you were.
We love watching your channel! From NC, USA
Welcome from Poland
In the UK, it is well known that leaves on the track can stop entire rail networks. I’m watching this video with envy.
... tell me about it, friend! The wrong kind of snow, the wrong kind of rain, technical problems. Japan Rail etc. impresses me every time.
Hi. Happy to see you back. I always enjoy watching your videos. Thank you for taking us long your journey's. Stay safe and healthy. Love from Montreal,Quebec. 🥰
Good job 👍 👏 👌,
Hello from Sakhalin 👍👍👍👍
Love your videos!thank you! Greetings from Italy! 🇮🇹🥰
Beautiful, got to see the northernmost point of Japan through your video. Thank you.
What a wonderful trip, arigatou gozaimasu! I really enjoy your humour, like the prospect of tasting the snow, then "Nah, I'm good", it made me chuckle. :)
Thanks, wonderful to see Cape Soya! I’m from Cape Cod Massachusetts

Most helpful Video. I plan to do the exact same trip next month 👍
Thanks for taking us along. It's a beautiful cape. 😍 I loved the scenery. I enjoy your videos very much!! Sandy, from Indiana, USA
Wakkanai has been on my travel list since the anime Honey & Clover. ❤️
Someone that doesn't have kids. A baby locker. Lol! That's a changing table! I think that is great that it is separate with a sink.

More 3,000 km of perfect railway - just unbelievable!
"Japans northernmost gift shop... and northernmost vending machines." I enjoy your understated humor.
Thank you for the nice video! I can‘t help- but I like that Diesel sound 👍
Amazing video as always :) Thank you for this agreable trip !
You are brave! Thanks. For the video.😊

Used to live in Obihiro. Love your videos... They make me nostalgic for my time there 😥 I hope to return one day...
Beautiful scenery.
Snow everywhere.
We don't have it here.
Thanls for sharing.
Lovely video Kuga, really enjoyable.
Interesting spot. Thank you.
Aloha 🤙 from Honolulu!
This was an excellent post capturing the long journey, but also the rugged beauty of the northern coast - thank you for sharing and making the effort
Hokkaido is still beautiful in the winter.
When we lived in Alaska you had to beware of moose on the tracks, they like to stand in cleared spots.
But then the train only went 25mph.
Thank you for taking us where most of us will never be able to go. Fantastic ride!
I lived in Sapporo for 15 years and I absolutely love Sapporo 💕. God the amount of times I have been to this Station , bringing back so many lovely memories now.
Really salute you. Go all the way up just to look and feel and go back on the same day.
Beautiful! Its my dream to travel on a snowy day in a train. I can sleep peacefully tonight after watching this. ❤

I live in Minnesota in the US and we are known for snow. Despite that, even I am impressed by the amount of snow!
So now I finally know where soya sauce comes from!
I really want to visit Hokkaido in winter. Hopefully by next year Japan will reopen to individual travelers again. It's a lifelong dream I want to make come true.
All of it was so beautiful! Thank you for sharing it!
Extraordinary camera captures
Super cold in Japan
SWEDEN LOVES JAPAN !
Thank you for braving the winds and cold. Very interesting! Especially since I got to see Japan’s Northernmost Souvenir Shoppe!😀
Quite an impressive journey!

To be honest, there are many mountain areas close to Tokyo witness even more snow than in the video, while the temperature being over a mild -5°© at night.
There are areas in Japan that get 4-7meters of snow which is crazy, snowiest part of the world.
Wow!

Wow so much snow and another great train journey
A baby locker? Sweet! **stores baby until later.** 😆
What a great trip! Looked so cold, I'm surprised you didn't get something to eat. Really good video, thank you!

17:22 the last thing I expected to see was Russian language. Wow!
And overall - soooo snowy, I could feel the cold
In Hokkaido you’re surrounded on 3 sides by Russian territory

Thank you, Kuga! Another wonderful experience!
Another tremendous journey, thank you for sharing it with us!
The colder it gets the more noise snow produces, in -20 to -40 snow will squeak when you walk on it.
A very long day of traveling, ありがとうございます。
Watching from Michigan, USA. Love your videos can’t wait to visit Japan. Hopefully soon!
Thank you for sharing another pleasant journey ⛩🚄🌨
Watching from Denmark 🇩🇰

The snow is beautiful, but I’ll bet you are ready for spring.
beautiful landscape...DEER!!!

My favorite band, Galileo Galilei, comes from Wakkanai. They make charming songs, just like the charming town of Wakkanai.
Splendid ride. I would love to travel on this track. Good work.

2 minutes of late with kilometers in highness of snow
Here in italy 2 hours late every single day due to everything
Wao train is moving even in snow. May we visit here some day

Brrr! -2°C on a windy cape! I got cold only by watching. Although you were lucky it wasn't raining/snowing.
Thank you for the great guide.
By the way, Wakkanai is only a little further south than the northernmost point of the island of Iturup (Etorofu). About 3 kilometers.
Your videos make me calm and balanced. Thank you.
