I turn my jade plant into a bonsai tree. I will get this tree started down the path to becoming a bonsai. It will take years for this tree to become an interesting bonsai but today we will look at techniques we can use to get this plant looking like a bonsai.
Succulents typically grow in dry areas such as deserts and its leaves hold water for long periods of time. The jade plant prefers coarse, sandy soil similar to its native arid habitats like deserts. Jade plants are great plants for beginners because they are very forgiving and also low maintenance.
Jade plants grow successfully in light conditions ranging from full sun to part-shade. Full sun will produce tighter growth. Grown in shade the plant will become lanky. Day time temps from low 70s to low 80s are preferred and they prefer nighttime temperatures around upper 40s to lower 60s Fahrenheit. Jade plants are adapted to dry climates.
Less is more as far as watering jade plants is concerned. Their leaves conserve water so allow extended periods between watering. Depending on conditions, a watering schedule could be once every 10 days or once every 20 or more days. Do not water more than once every 30 days in the winter unless conditions are very hot and dry where the plant is kept. .
Spring and summer are the best times for pruning jade trees. This is when the plant is undergoing the most active growth, and the plant will heal faster after pruning. Using clean, sharp implements, Cut away heavy and/or awkward branches by clipping right above the node. The point where one branch grows out from another branch is known as the node.
Jade trees grow slowly, and keeping the jade plant in a small pot will maintain a dwarf size. If a larger size plant is desired, the tree should be re-potted into a larger container.
Jade plants take quickly and easily to wiring. Wires may be used to train jade plants into various styles, and within one month the new position will become set.

That's some fancy editing 😀 The jade looks good, I also think it looks good with the side branch at least for now. 👍

Thanks 👍 I'm really starting to like that side branch! I am thinking of making it a mini version of the main canopy right next to it. I have been using the quarantine time to watch hours and hours of video and photo editing tutorials!

Sounds good, and you could always take it off in the future and start a second one 😀👍 Maybe sometime down the road I'll play around with some editing, it looks like fun !

I like the secondary trunk. It would make a nice canopy look over time.

Wow I’m just starting to dip my toe into the world of bonsais and watching you trim away all those roots was painful. I know that that’s the way to do it, but it just goes against all my previous houseplant experience. I may be too faint of heart to upkeep my own bonsais 😂😭

gonna go against the herd here and say I think you should remove the lower branch! I think that you've got a beautiful trunk structure there and that the secondary branch really just distracts from the movement of the primary trunk!

Good point! The longer I wait the bigger scar it will leave too.

I wish my leaves would walk off like that 😂 it looks good I’m curious to see how the cutting the leaves works out. The test you did looked very promising. I would also keep that second trunk. I think it would look to bare with out it. 👍

The easy way to prune!! I did get some potting soil in some of the cut points so that darkened them up a bit but overall they're lookin good.

Just binged a bunch of your videos!
I love all the content and I’m excited for more.
I have a suggestion that might bring your videos to the next level, a simple clip on quality microphone!

    • @HerbandRoots
      @HerbandRoots  4 года назад +1

Thanks for the kinds words and the suggestion! I hope to make an investment in some new video/audio equipment soon. I just need to have the will power to not spend my extra funds on plants first!

Herb and Roots set up a patreon,
I would be happy to pay monthly and I’m sure others would too and make you feel more obligated to spend those funds on quality equipment before plants!
