Thanks for an excellent explanation. I have attic foil above my cellulose insulation. It works quite well. On hot days there's about a ten degree temperature difference between the top and bottom of the foil That ten degrees of heat my insulation does not have to deal with.
with this product both sides are reflective.. you're thinking of foam board.. and the reflective side would go in the direction you want to send heat.. so if you're in a warm climate you would point it towards the roof to try and send heat back out the roof.. in a cold climate you want to point it towards your house to radiate heat back into your house
I just got this foil from Amazon, from the manufacturer. So its not a chinese fake. I lit it up with a lighter and it burns like paper, even faster. Isnt it supposed to be SOMEWHAT fire retardant? is that something people actually installing in their attic next to all the electric wires and furnaces? Thats a fire hazard
You always call the city and verify with their inspector/manager for building codes. Pull a work permit, don’t let contractors say it’s ok and just waste of time and money. There are as much cowboys as certified contractors in the Wild West.

You still don’t say if the reflective side faces in or out for a very hot climate.

I would recommend to you to use fully aluminum foil, not with babble (PE). That is fire resistant.
there is no product like you describe unless you mean a kitchen grade aluminium foil from walmart. all insulation foils have a plastic base. @@voramuj

Can you use this under drywall as a vapor retardant. Like the foil back drywall

You're asking for mold with this method. Always use loose blown in insulation in the attic. Insulate but breathable.
