    Sean, since i first watched you in your Statcraft dailies, while still in college even, i always saw you as such a philosopher. You have always seemed to have your life on track and knew what you wanted.

    Hey Sean, I used to watch all of your videos daily, I stopped watching after StarCraft (not hating at all, you gotta live your life!), But I'm glad I watched this. It's good to see you're still the funny, kind person you've always been.
    I'm still subscribed and I plan on keeping it that way. Regardless of what you do on the channel, you've always got an entertaining personality. These types of little commentaries make our days better! Thanks!

    Dang, this was awesome. I've been watching Day9 for going on 8 years now (off and on) and I love when he goes on these little insightful rants. Glad you were able to find a way to "de-frazzle" because it certainly helped me. This was a gem, thank you.

    Oh, this hit close to home. So much of my day is just procrastinating with BS timekillers, I procrastinate so much that I even put off things other people would consider procrastination, like starting a new TV series, starting a movie and starting a new game. I'm always feeling exhausted and low on energy even though I never move or do anything stimulating. I should follow Sean's advice and set a schedule to find a balance between everything.

      exact same here, I have a huge watchlist of movies and a huge steam backlog, but I just keep playing dota and the binding of isaac for hours and hours, it's actually so depressing
      I gotta make a change

      @@jsatcok I've read about this and I have the same problem: our brain is in lazy mode; it takes energy to actively engage in something new. It's much easier to fire up a game of dota because you already know the rules and you don't have to spend energy for cognitive thinking which is needed even for leisure activities like getting into a new series or games.
      Being obsessed with just 1-2 games you grind out every day because it's familiar and doesn't require any extra thinking is a dangerous type of addiction that may lead to, or is already a symptom of depression; a twist of consequences that I'm also suffering from myself and I can only advise you to start changing for the better and at least start experiencing some new things.
      And thrust me I know very well how hard it is to break such a comforting habbit, but you have to try to at least shake up things a little bit if you want to make your life better.

      I've stopped playing my go-to games in the last 3 weeks and what I experience is really weird. On the one hand I've gotten around to playing a game from my backlog, which takes a lot of my attention and thus a lot of my energy. It's a hard game, and it's really really dense with content. New rules and new areas to explore every few minutes. (the game is Hollow Knight)
      So when I've used up all my energy I quit that game and I feel much better about it, because I actually experienced something new and exciting and I feel good. BUT then my brain basically SHOUTS at me "go play some mindless game, just play a bit of isaac", and I tell myself no.
      This is when true depression hits me. Because I realize that I actually have no idea what to do other than that. I WANT to do something creative, but I don't have the energy or the motivation to start it. But it is now crystal clear to me, that playing the time-killer games was just my brain escaping to a place where it doesn't have to cope with the aimlessness that I have in my life right now.
      But I'm optimistic, because now I took a huge step forward by identifying the problem. I started seeing a therapist right away when I realized my complete lack of motivation to do anything.

    I've been to a psychiatrist a few times because I got really depressed. I found out that there were too many things that were drawing a lot of energy from me, and there were too little things that I was getting energy from. I learned to balance my time and activities to feel happy, satisfied and rested. After some time I felt way better and kind of dropped that structure, only to fall into a depressed state again. I thought I learned something from my psychiatrist and I moved on, assuming all would be fine from that point in time. I recently started picking things up again, similar to what you described in this highlight, and things have been going pretty well. Learning to say no is hard for me too, but is part of balancing everything out. You can't keep doing everything which drains you; everyone needs some time to relax and to do silly fun things too. I've learned that it is okay to not always change and improve everything all the time. In the end all that matters is that we're happy, you will find activities that work for you, just make sure to maintain those to maintain yourself and everything will be fine :)!

      Could you share a little bit of the structure you implemented? I think I'm in the same boat as you were. I think these time wasting energy depleting activities are draining a lot of people, and not many people have started to address this fully.

    I’m glad you are taking some time to really calculate your needs. The better your understand your needs, the better you can tend to them. I appreciate your heartfelt sentiments within this video. I believe that you’ve shared an important concept in an effective and relatable manner - this is also quite a skill that you’ve sharpened over the years - even if it is expending some energy, it’s certainly brought you growth as well.

    I just need to say thank you for being so candid with your audience. There was a time when I couldn't bear the thought of dealing with the days ahead, to the point that I didn't think I would anymore. It was around that time that I stumbled upon your content, and I dove right in, wrapping myself up in your stories like a nice warm blanket. It helped me get through the day, and then the next one, and so on, until I didn't dread the coming days any longer. In some ways I credit Sean with saving my life. So thanks for being you Day9, you've likely done more for your audience's mental health than you can understand.

    I've slowly been learning the same things over the past year or two. I now know most of what makes me happy, and i'm developing myself to be better at managing my time to do those things. Thank you for making me feel like i'm not the only one who doesn't quite know what i should be doing all the time. It's genuinely hard.     I honestly want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your thought through positivity and yummy knowledge bits like that.
    Also I just recently decided to quit online gaming, because it just became a frustrating time filler (your 4th category) and stopped me from developing myself as a person and projects that are important to me (a little like an addiction even). Like you helped me with a lot of good advice this video also reasurred me with my decision! ^_^ Also i liked sharing it with my friends to help them with and talk about their problems aswell and making them understand my situation.

    This is exactly what I needed to hear today. I've had a few really "blah" days this past week and I just couldn't for the life of me figure out why. I had things to do for school and around the house, and instead I ended up staying up way too late mindlessly playing Stardew Valley and scrolling through social media. Not even being super engaged in it, just continually doing it because I didn't feel like doing anything else that I knew I needed to do. I'm going to try paying more attention to my schedule and the things I do with my time and see if that helps.

    I dunno how Sean does this.. But every time I watch him or listen to him.. It feels like this young uncle kinda guy.. He's older than me and knows shit and has these cool advices and at the same time I can relate so much to him because of the nerdy side of him. Sometimes I feel like I listen to a real good pal, a friend.. And even though I'm definitely not a sub that watches every video it's just like I come back every now and then and have these cool, layed back moments with uncle sean

    The more energy you expend the more your body will produce, that's why exercising gives you more energy (This builds up over time, if you are not used to constantly working out, you will feel completely drained out, but as long as you stay to your routine it will become easier by the day, you will end up doing more working out or having extra energy for other things eventually). Also exercising right when you wake up activates your body for the day, gets your blood pumping. Drink a lot of water early in the morning because your body is dehydrated after sleep. (BTW, coffee dehydrates you, so if you are one of those people who wakes up and grabs coffee straight away, you are just making it worse.) Replace coffee with a small workout routine and a lot of water, you will be at a higher mental state than you would be with coffee with no drowsiness and crashes afterwards.
    Food is also very important for energy productivity; fats provide constant energy for a longer period of time & carbs provide quick burst of energy but gets you hungry and exhausted a lot quicker. Eating more fats will allow you to remain energized for a long while and also don't provide as much calories, making it a lot easier to eat less and lose weight.
    After going through all those things (Optimizing your mental and physical energy), the last thing to balance is just your work & relaxation times. Both are equally important.
    For relaxation times, it depends on the person, Day9 sounds like he's an introvert and after all the hard work, he just wants to be alone in his own mind, where as a big majority of people enjoy going out and socializing, it's about realizing if socializing drains your energy or gives you energy as an individual.

    That's called being an introvert Sean. You can still be outgoing and introverted. It only means that to replenish your energy, you need solitude, leaving your thoughts to yourself or just not thinking at all and process whatever your mind presents you.

    Sean...yet again you blow my mind with another revelation, a spark of epiphany if you will.
    What you describe in this video is a problem I have faced too often just in my day to day life, mostly filling my time with BS activities in the hopes that I "Feel better", whilst leaving truly enjoyable side projects left by the wayside. Incomplete game prototypes just thrown in a folder to be forgotten over time.
    Yet somehow, over the last 2/3 days, I have been dusting off an old Pokémon simulator game and an inventory/crafting prototype. A new project has arisen with wondrous potential.
    Of course I don't have you to thank for those however, I am very thankful of this new perspective you have given me.
    This Video reminds me to look at old and new projects alike and use them as a frequent source of joy in my life. This video reminds me why I subscribed to you like....5 years ago lol

    If it is physical, look into your nutrition.
    Some quick tips maybe: more zinc and magnesium in case exercise is making you tired. Hydrating is a good idea.
    In case it is mental; ask yourself if you are missing rest or inspiration. They do not necessary go together, but sometimes may have similar effect (life feeling blank...empty...repetitive...boring).
    For inspiration, just shake things up :) Cliche advice but sometimes we do not realise how boredom sneaks up on us resolving in low energy :)

    I think we've all been there. I get super into my art and drawing, but I also have a creative job. I want to spend more time with my art and draw something amazing, but it burns me out there is only so much I can create in one week.
    To get away from it I play games, but it gets sooo harder to wake up in the morning. Wasn't until I started watching TV or reading before bed I started waking up before my alarm. (I still stay in bed though).
    I still want to work out and go to the gym, but finding the energy to go to the gym is haaaard, I feel like it either art OR gym! I guess we can't all do everything. (Especially with the overwatch event atm, been doing waay to much BS timekillers this month).

      @@civnopesgg3889 I do alsorts, Im literally walking back from a life drawing class as I write this. I do mostly digital painting (Im a graphic designer so I have all the right tools) and sketching. Ive been on a mission to go as many museums as possible and draw! What about you, what do you paint? Its nice to know Im not alone :)

Right now I'm in a cgma course for figure drawing to improve on that. Going to museums and drawing there seems really cool as well!

    thanks for the vid, i can kinda relate to that because im currently in some kind of mood and dont know why i dont have the energy to do stuff
    but Fitness related, for me Training doesnt give me Energy instantaneous, but its the energy ive still got after 2 months of straight training and running for 1 hour straight, that is the goal for me
    i dont wanna lay down after sport and be finished with the day, i want to be fit. After some time Training (mainly running and Sprinting) i got to that point, mind you im 19 and playing Ultimate Frisbee and i love it, so there is another motivation but right now my fitness degrrades because i cant keep up with the Training cause ive work to do und dont use my time accordingly and just kill time watching youtube :(

    The human organism is weird. Showers give me energy for some reason and I have no idea why. Going out by myself and being around people does as well. It really does depend on the person as to what random little things give them energy.

      I have found myself super tires at work and when a manager says "good job" I get a super strong second wins. It honestly freaks me out a bit. (Worked at a summer camp for years and for I bit I had little time for sleep often but had endless energy...so odd.)

      I find getting a haircut gives me an energy boost and it's just about being able to relax and let your guard down for a little while
      and for me it's a fresh start, you put a full stop in the current sentence and start a new one

    Thanks, Sean. Neat ideas. But I don't mind admitting that I'm quite a bit older than you, and I still don't think I have a real idea on what my 4 things are... and how to stop (as you say) my brain telling me to do X for that dopamine hit, vs. things that are going to recharge me, or relax me. Anyone have any advice to help me identify these things for ME? What am I looking for? Thank you Sean, and everyone once again.

      idk if this will be helpful, but for me personally, i struggle to think of any "energizing" activities for myself. but basically im trying to think through what i do during times that i have the most choice, and how i feel doing those things. for example what do i do during my breaks at work, and do i feel more energy or less after break? or how i spend my time off, what activities give me energy? i dont have any answers for myself, but maybe my process will help you haha good luck

      I struggled with this for a long time as well, heck, I still do. But from my experience, you should think about stuff you do and how you feel immediately after you done that thing. Do you feel better or worse? My depression and anxiety addled brain would turn most activities into a grueling chore in retrospect, so it wasn't easy picking anything I actually enjoy or what gives me energy or relaxation. To my utter surprise, I found that I like exercise. Which is weird, because I'm a sedentary IT guy and quite a bit overweight as well. But when I really think about it, every time I had to do some impromptu physically strenuous activity, like hauling boxes, furniture, change a tire, etc, I always felt great right after. I felt buff, charged, like I could take on the world. Of course I always regretted the next day with aching joints and muscle strain, but that's only because I'm outrageously out of shape. The other thing is housecleaning. No young bachelor in their right mind would consider cleaning and chores to be anything but awful. Depression makes you even more sedentary and sometimes even outright unable to do maintenance activities. It takes me a LOT to bring myself to pick up a mop. Nothing less than turning my apartment into a veritable biohazard, when I kick aside pizza boxes and empty bottles to get to the kitchen and getting a coughing fit because of the dust, and people avoiding me because I literally smell like fermented garbage. But when I actually get up and start cleaning, it's....relaxing. I put on some music, and just go to town on the absolute disaster zone. I suddenly find my brain actually turning on, filling with new ideas while I sweep, mop, take out the thrash, etc. And I love the clean air, the faint smell of citrus, the clean sheets, it just makes my day. Especially the fact that now I can proudly have visitors over, without handing out hazard suits and gas masks. The worst thing about depression is, that you forget all that immediately after it's over, and your brain only remember the bad shit. The work, muscle ache, the sweat, the chemical burns, etc, and you have to exert conscious effort to remember the good parts.

      Remove anything that you would normally do for that dopamine hit right now for a week or two. Uninstall/block reddit, youtube etc. Uninstall the games you'd play or if you can't keep them off your computer try to put the entire computer away for a week. Being bored is one of the best ways to find things you're interested in and that make you feel good.

    I'm really REALLY bad at resting. Like, I habitually cut time from sleep to try to do other things. Just ends up with me feeling drained and trying to slog through work.

    Stick to working out, it's gonna "give you energy" eventually =). I feel great after every workout, even with DOMS, even after a heavy squat/DL day. I think it is partly addiction and partly just chemicals being released.

    I don't know if Day9 will see this, so I'm asking anyone what he meant by "maintenance" when listing his four activities (Maintenance, Energizing Activities, Restfulness, Time Filler). From what I gathered, I'm guessing maintenance is working out. But what would be other maintenance activities rather than working out? Thanks.

      6:00 "Eating healthy, going to bed on time, drink enough water, showering, being hygienic, keeping area around you clean" - basically housework and .. well, maintaining yourself and your surrounding.

    I find this is a huge issue and a trap that I've fallen into. Just surfing reddit is so toxic to the brain's reward systems. Having constant access to novelty and therefore constant dopamine hits is really really bad for you. I feel so much better on the months where I manage to quit reddit/facebook/etc. in favour of actually doing stuff.

      I think he prefers to play OW off steam while relaxing a bit. :) Streaming is an entirely different experience from gaming imo.
