When you opened the cowl, I said, "Is that a Ranger engine?" How cool is that? Kudos to that lady who knew her stuff regarding starting it. Awesome fun buddy!
She's a member of EAA Chapter 35 in San Antonio. A pretty amazing pilot... just a few years ago she took her first ride in an aerobatic airplane, now she regularly competes in regonal competitions; just finished her commercial; took a helicopter ride I think late last year, now getting her helicopter add-on. Regular Young Eagle pilot. Instrument rated. I was not expecting to see her, and just got an email from her confirming that it was her. I'm just bummed that Jimmy was in my neck of the woods, and I didn't know it, couldn't get over to rubberneck or photobomb a youtube video.... LOL
That's a Falconar SAL P51 Mustang 2/3 scale, with a Ranger 6 Cylinder engine. They were plans built. Never available in an actual "kit". The Mustang you have there is also in a RUclips video tilted "SAL P51D Replica". Previous owner was Jerry Sides. Check it out , it shows Jerry flying it.
Being Britsh and ex RAF I have to say I'm bias and love the Spitfire and the Hurricane but the P-51 is a thing of beauty . And this little P-50.5 has all that same beauty . Can't wait see this fly and I think this will be the first to sell . That's of cause if don't decide to keep it for yourself . I'm sure you could persuade your better half 😊😊
Jimmy always makes me laugh when he reminds us all the number 1 cause of fatal plane accidents is flying planes that have recently been repaired, exactly what he does every time he buys a plane that's been sat unused for years , gotta love this guy , fly safely Jimmy 👍
My younger Brother Dan belonged to the EAA. He lived and Breathed airplanes. Lost him in January to covid. I still look up every time a small plane is overhead of my farm. God I miss him. Always wanted me to go to Oshkosh with him. Regret not taking the time to be with him. Thank you Jimmy for the great video! Be Safe!
JIMMY! I just wanted to say on your most recent video that I did my first solo yesterday. A big thanks to you and your videos for inspiring me to get out there and get my license. Now if I just had a plane 🤔
Looks like the builder did a great job on your aircraft. This replica is basically a Fairchild Pt-19/26 firewall forward. 200 HP Ranger engine with the oil cooler mounted under the belly. Ranger Engines are smooth running and sound great. Pain in the butt if you have to pull a cylinder since the camshaft and housing have to be removed before you remove a cylinder. I owned a PT-26 for 36 years and did it more than once. I would love to fly this replica P-51! Lucky guy!
I remember years ago there was a fibrglass version of the P51 kitplane...it was a lot like building a model airplane or rc plane...That Mustang has a BIG NOSE on it!! Talk about being a rush to fly. I would love to see if anybody ever built a P39 Aircobra ( tri gear ) kitplane..that would be very popular to build and fly... Taildragers..are tricky.. 🐦 ..
I really love the content! I’ve been working on and flying for 40+ years and never get tired of seeing the variety of aircraft you get to play with. Thank you!
I had a lot of faith in the P 51 mustang I knew it’s gonna start is it is is in a good condition carpet it’s amazing clean a little bit of papa, gas and why she goes awesome job Jimmy😂😂❤🫵🫵🇨🇦
This is a Ranger engine. Upside down is the normal installation position. A friend had a Fairchild 24 E, the only one flying in the world, and it use the Ranger engine. When rebuilding it they had to use rings from a Cadillac. Likely from the 50's.
My flight instructor back in the day was a demo pilot for Fighter Escourt Wings and he demoed a Mustang like this for them. It was really neat to see this, it brought back a lot of memories
ask him what kind of powerplant. I remember development stalled on the F.E.W. 67% Mustang due to no suitable powerplant and they wanted an auto conversion. If one ever flew it was most likely with a conventional airplane powerplant and that must have looked hideous fitting that in the available space. Not sure if a customer airplane ever flew from the handful of kits that were delivered.
Thank you for the video. Now retired and old areo repair/crash recovery air plane gye, I truly get it. Just could not be far away from aircraft, now no choice. Still got my memories, they can't take that away!
Jimmy, you have got to keep that one get rid of all the Cubs and keep this one. It’s like a P 40 but I know you want to keep one of the other ones to train Silas. I would get him a Cessna 180 skyline or some thing you’ve got to keep the P 51B for baby just my thoughts that was awesome. I can’t believe it’s an inverted sex.
That looks like an SAL Mustang designed by Chris Falconar who sadly passed away four years ago at the age of 92. He was an aeronautical engineer with many designs to his credit. Chris offered plans, material kits and fabricated components such as fairings, belly scoops, cowls, wing tips etc. some of the metal weldments were also available. There are quite a few flying and the type may still be on the market under new ownership. I actually have a Ranger 6-440 engine which is what it was originally designed around. I will be donating the engine to a museum as a spares source for a Cornell that is actively flown. Chris was one of my best friends and his passing was a major loss for the aviation community. He spent most of his life in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada where he founded EAA Chapter 30 which is the first International Chapter of EAA.
12:38 that's where the old saying comes from. Going Balls to the Wall When they had to jam the tops of the throttle levers (rubber balls) right to the firewall during dogfights
🤔 Oh really, 😜 well let's see Jimmy get a fighter jet that's been crashed into the ocean flying again... That should be on the same level for him then lol 😆 or the Elvis jet flying... 😂
Nice little bird. That Ranger engine is a real jewel. I’ve got the same one in a PT19. Always starts easy and are really tough. Way to jimmy!! When are you going to start marketing your collection?
Yea... this Is a beautiful plane.. 🤤 If i was gonna keep any out of that lot it would be this one for sure. You're definitely gonna have to fly this one Jimmy. 😅
Love the Plywood-51 Woodstang! Always loved the look of those old warbirds, but the prices...wow. That looks like it "wood" be an awesome plane to fly, and dependable as well; thats a tough 6 cyl in there. Wish I had the bread to buy it, but probably won't in time.
When I was a kid living in Los Angeles, I remember going to Edwards AFB and seeing rows upon rows of P51 and P47 airplanes, engines removed and standing on their nose waiting to be scrapped. Even as a 9 year old, it made me sick. That had to be 1958-59.
Interesting homebuilt 2/3 P-51D. Mixture on the right side, throttle on the left... ummmmm... different. Small fuel leak? Ehhhhh, it'll be fine. The 2/3 P-51 is definitely an interesting experimental aircraft.
This plane is exciting! Jimmy, I really look forward to seeing this one fly! The P51 is my all time favorite airplane, even a replica is very cool. You always deliver great content and you are getting to do the stuff we all dream of doing. Good job man!
The P50(1) is a beauty, and anyone would be proud to own her imo, great work guys & it shows getting the start sequence right and she fired on 2nd turn but on the 1st correct sequence.
Hey if you need to keep water from coming in the roof vent on the RV when mine broke I used an umbrella just poke it thru the vent hole and open it up. Its not permanent but it works great temporarly. That way you don't get ant more water damage before you fix. Would not suggest while in motion. Btw just started watching your channel and do far so good! Keep up the good work!
Great job bringing these planes back to life. Look forward to seeing them flying again in the wild blue yonder. I love seeing all the cool stuff happening in Jimmy's World
It's amazing, sometimes you have to hold your jaw to the right for engines to start. Working on cars for over 50 years, and on some engines, you just have o figure out the combination of things to do to get them to start. Good Job Jimmy.
As a boy growing up in the farmland of North Central Nebraska we had a neighbor who had turned his big hip roof barn into the Garage Majhal of home Shops. He had been an actual Aircraft Mechanic in WW2 and worked almost exclusively on the Packard Powered Mustangs in England that flew bomber escort missions into Germany during the war. When he came home he poured most of his spare time into building Drag Racing Cars as a Hobby and also did some racing of his own. However it was in the late 60's that I got old enough to drive over and visit him daily after school so naturally I became like the Son he and his wife never could have. They had 3 Daughters that were all married and moved away to both coasts so I kinda got adopted. Anyway he had many old photos of the War and he kept telling me he was one day going to find a Packard /Merlin powered Mustang and buy it ....and he was a man of his word. He wound up buying a Fully Functional Mustang with the Packard Merlin engine from some country in South America, He and his wife flew down and actually got the Plane going and flew it all the way home making stops several places along the way of course to fix leaks, things breaking and what not but they landed on our little country crop duster grass air strip about 10 days after they left home. Then he called my folks and we all went to the airstrip about 9 miles from our home and my folks took his wife home and he had me fly the last little hop from there to their home. It wasnt really a 2 seater but he knew how to modify and move stuff so his little wife or me a 14 yr old skinny kid could ride quite comfortably behind his seat ...see he wasnt very tall either at 5'4" so it all worked out quite well. I spent the next nearly 2 years helping him rebuild and repair every little tiny piece of that plane and we got it right back to its original shape and colors....she was the most beautiful thing I've ever seen and it ran so good and sounded amazing, there is no mistaking the sound of that 12 cylinder engine under power....man it will vibrate your innards standing 15 feet away from it..He took it to several air shows and flew it frequently then his wife passed from cancer and he seemed to loose all interest in life period. He sold the plane to some collector from Northern California who put it in several movies I was told by his one Daughter who lived out there but as to where its at today I don't have a clue but my name and his and the date we finished its rebuild is inside the cowl in yellow enamel paint. I wound up being in the will and inherited all the tools and shop equipment from Old Military Metal Lathe to bolt bins...from brass hammers to German and Swiss made measurement devices for measuring bore sizes etc. And every tool and piece of equipment in between that a man could ever want and I treasure them all....they are in my version of his Garage Majhal in my yard....I found out about 6 months later from the lawyer that the Daughters who each got a equal share of the sale of the Mustang had all gotten together had a meeting and took the money from the Mustang sale and even some of their own and pooled it to try and buy the Mustang back from the guy in California because they knew their Dad really wanted me to have it but wanted also to leave his Girls something too, so they decided since they were all quite well off from the sale of the farm and what they had already....that if successful they all voted to buy it back and give it to me believe it or not but the Collector in Cali wouldn't budge even though he was going to make a sizeable profit...he wasn't having any of it. So thats the God's truth of what happened to that Mustang....I've tried many times over the years since to at least track it down but no such luck. Last time I have any verification it still exists out there someplace it had transferred hands 3 times since the Old Man sold it to the guy in California, and then twice to people who have a lawyers office as an address so....what does that tell you.
That screenshot cracked me up 😂 You're a dag Jimmy but i love ya mate. Been watching from Melbourne Australia since you had roughly 60k subscribers. Love your content brother.
I’d like to know who built it and how old it is. Some 40 years ago when I was I kid riding my bike through our neighborhood I saw one of these being built in the garage behind a man’s house. I stopped to check it out because I was already consumed by anything to do with aviation. The man was a WWII P-51 pilot and he was building a 2/3 scale Falconar P-51 from plans with an inverted Ranger 6 engine. I was mesmerized! I went to see him every chance I got. He let me help with some chores, like sanding the wings. I never saw it finished and I never saw it fly. I’d love to know where it is now. His name was Elmer Farris in Lexington, KY.
This one was built by Jerry Sides, TX. Falconar reported that at least 16 SAL P51Ds were built and flown. Interestingly, a 2/3 scale P51 built by Farris does appear in the FAA database but it does not appear to be currently registered.
@@buckmurdock2500 I am sure Mr. Farris (Ferris?) has long since passed away. I think I remember reading that he may have crashed it but not badly damaged ( maybe a forced landing) but have no idea what happened to it since then.
SOOO COOL! That prop looks So Small compared to the actual plane size and the real one has the four blades of course which look much longer than these. But SO COOL!
The dedication of one bloke building that plane from scratch.

That’s exactly what I just said! Look at us airplane nerds freaking out. I love it.
Bucket list item.........Spend a day working on planes with Jimmy........looks like so much fun.

five cranks ought to do it. Wow only two did it! You just needed instructions on how to start it. Great work Jimmy! I really like that P-50!

Please keep the p51 Jimmy I really want to see it flying
This is why i love ❤️ Jimmy's world!!! God bless Jimmy
HeHe. Yaaaaaa Baaaaaby. You two are GOOOD. Can’t wait to see some of them fly. Mustang, SE5 , Jenny. Oh yes, please.
That's the one I'd keep out of all of them!
Congrats Jimmy and crew on getting the mini P-51 Mustang running.. sounds great with the 6 cylinder engine..

The P50 looks like it's interior and parts are in better shape then any of your other planes. 😂 atleast they are cleaner and free of dirt and oil.
And spiders 🕷 😬
Looks like it was in a better hangar.

Even though not a genuine p51 it is still really cool.
I’d definitely keep the mini pony ! 😀
A few years back I saw a 3/4 spitfire replica with a Jaguar V12 sounded fantastic
YESSSSSS IVE BEEN WAITING SO LONG FOR THIS LITERALLY CHECKING EVERY DAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY I LIVE YOU JIMMY LETS GOIOOOOOOO
I am not a pilot or plane guy but your attitude and enthusiasm is great to watch. I love watching your show - thanks for sharing your passion with us.

Liking the Airfix Mustang , just the machine for your son :)

Yah BOI! Hope we get to see the P-50.66 in flight, maybe with the SE-5a? To quote a friend of mine- "lotta work", good job fellers!
Well done Jimmy from NZ...🎉🎉🎉
P51D. The most beautiful creation since the beginning of time!
The P50(1) is a beauty, and anyone would be proud to own her imo, great work guys & it shows getting the start sequence right and she fired on 2nd turn but on the 1st correct sequence.
There are a few 3/4 or 2/3 Mustangs that fly over DF-Day Ohio at the August event. They add so much the the battle.
What a shot! Bet you would like to take that thing for a spin.
this P-51 is just to darn cool and this is a plane you should keep
Great video jimmy i love the mini mustang ya definitly gotta take it out for a spin before you sell it.
What kinda engine is that?? Merlin mini? Thats no fare you had help from professional engine start Lady 😂👍👍👍
Jimmy needs to hire that lady IMMEDIATELY!
I like that seat better than the boat cushions most aircraft have. I might go for a super light race seat like a Kirkey and a race harness.
Love the P-50 startup.
So great to see you start it right up. ✈️✈️✈️✈️
Jimmy, you make everything about airplanes exciting! Love your videos!
Thumbs up 👍 3 cranks and ready to go 😀
I wonder how many P51 mini home builds are in existence? Maybe this is one of a kind? Great video Jimmy. Love your content. Take care.
Look at Gnatsum we have quite a few in Europe
Got one at my local airport here in NZ powered by a V6 suzuki vitara car engine, cool little plane. Keep the adventure goin Jimmy.
Looks to be a Falconar SAL Mustang, not one of a kind....but not a whole lot of them kicking around.
Is it a Legendary Mustang from Ed Hullinger ? If it's glass fibre it might be
It is possibly a W.A.R Replicas P51 Mustang. Cuz of you look at the gear there’s no cover. The intake also looks the same.
I love this channel, so much enthusiasm! What a blast!
Very Cool Jimmy .
Congratulations Jimmy!
Holy cow! 2 cranks after how many years? Shows it pays to know the 'secret' in starting the old girl.
I really miss the good ole days of #savethe310 the longer format. Be safe clear prop
Suggest chock mains before pulling prop through

This Lady knows what she's talking about WTG !!
That Airport looks like Hondo Texas...The Woman giving instructions looks familiar too does she have a Pitts Special and Hi 👠..lol
I was gonna send this to her before I realized it was hers...
Love watching you Jimmy you always brighten up my day keep up the good work 👍👍👍save the 310 👍👍👍👍👍👍

Whoo hooo, been waiting on this one!!
Been looking forward to this one.
Still think you should keep the p51, Hands down the coolest one out of the bunch.
My grandfather Glen McIntyre he flew jugs in ww2 and a mustang for the marines in Korea. You know what he did.
Amazing!! Now you should try it in the sky!!
Man, you HAVE to fly that Baby Mustang before you pass it on! I'd LOVE to see that in the air.
I can understand it being a mock up version but in reality its a beautiful thing all on its own.
I guessed 20 and that still wasn't enough. Congrats
Like buying an old car, it is easy if you know all the secrets! Cheers from Texas.
Wow nice bird. Is this one of the ones included in the sale. I would keep this one 100% over the piper

@@kyflyboy965 No hits with Ferris and Falconar/SAL/P51 etc.
SOOO COOL! That prop looks So Small compared to the actual plane size and the real one has the four blades of course which look much longer than these. But SO COOL!
You're such a character. Wanna see a strafing run from this one, bro. Mad props (pun grudgingly allowed.)
Crazy that jet sat in rosewell for long time would see it all the time
Saved the best for last. Awesome!
The fuel pump was running fast and that means no fuel, just air. When it slows down you know it is pushing fuel and pressure.
I’ve flown in a real P-51, “lil horse” together with “the Dakota Kid” over Galveston Bay in 2012. Absolutely a high point of my life
At the same time in 2012 I was flying in the B-24 Witchcraft and P-51 escort along with the B-17 Nine o' Nines!
The minimust is the coolest of them all
VICTORY !!!! Ya did it Jimmy!!! Another awesome video. So, what's your next project?
