It seems that the only main reasons why many or most people come to visit Hawaii is the Haiku Stairs, but I understand the resentment form the residents, but I’m wondering if an agency of a group or mainland agency would pay residents who lives at the close vicinity of the stairs money for all the trouble hikers cause that would satisfy the residents and keep the stairs open
A long time ago, before HFD upgraded their frequencies and "vanished" (encrypted...), I would have a scanner and listen in to dispatches for Kailua, Kaneohe, Air 1, Rescue 2, Battalion 3, to be dispatched to Haiku Stairs for an injured hiker call.......this is resources taken away if there was ANOTHER emergency that was MORE IMPORTANT!!!! A HS supporter told me once that there never once was a fatality up there.....I can tell you this much, anyone can have a stroke, heart attack or miss a step and FALL to their deaths.....one day it WILL HAPPEN.
The farmer that owned the banana plantation in Maunawili used to shoot trespassers with his shotgun that had rock salt packed shells if he caught you sneaking thru his property to get to the falls and everyone steered clear of that banana patch! 😉

I reside in the Kalihi area. A while back, in 2012, our community was being stalked by a burglar. Cops knew his name and they said he was sorta sneaky. He often would hide when the cops showed up and then come out when they left. Per neighbors, he did burg and ransack my mom's old house and he often would "stalk me" by parking across the neighbors home and would "smile" at me cuz he probably see me peeking, looking at him as he would go up the road to see his "chick". Few years past and my neighbors son has told me that C did pass away. So to those folks that trespass thru yards and property, you think you have the "legal right" to do so.....pretty soon you going end up like that micro kid who got shot and killed all because he and his "buddies" climbed over the fence and TRESPASSED!!!!..........btw, the cops/dlnr should NOT only ticket cars, they should TOW THEM AWAY if they are BLOCKING a hydrant or total driveway!!! especially rental vehicles.......call up your rental agency and they probably tell YOU its not on their hands, YOU PARKED THERE illegally, you pay the tow bill, and storage fees.
I want to hike the ILLEGAL way, but I RESPECT THE HOME OWNERS. (If I was the homeowner, I would be pissed too) Dogs barking, people littering, pissing and pooping.
This entitled millennial magnet needs to be dismantled once and for all and residence given back their privacy. However, I'm somewhat perplexed as to why the Navy isn't paying for the removal and land remediation. They built the stairs to install an antenna back in WW2 and should be responsible for removal since it's not an active facility.
Now you know how we Hawaiians feel. We can’t get to our beaches to our water, to our fishing and hunting places. Now you know how we Hawaiian feel. #FreeHawaii

Ridiculous it is being torn down. Never had a serious accident (except for one heart attack). Much, much safer than alternate, completely legal route without any improvements. State could grant an easement through its land so that homeowners would no longer be bothered (that’s really bad that ppl were going through peoples yards).

Feels like the same logic as blocking public access to beach. If there isn't a good public path to the hike, then yeah it is what it is. Those who trespass took the risk into account so it's nobodies business but the trespasser and the property owner. The state should not interfere at all.
Who pays or is in charge for the ijjits that require helicopter rescues or body removal? The state determines these things... and I believe the satellite dishes at the peak were navy or military owned, so... but it's NOT public access because it's not an open trail. Great Job KITV interviewing people breaking laws. These are the people responsible to why it is being taken down as we speak.

These trespassers give hikers a bad name. No shame in gloating about it publicly and the only thing you can relate to is a video game. Grow up.
