- This stairway to heaven is made of steel cables and it is the highlight of a climbing tour of the Donnerkogel, in Austria's Salzkammergut resort area. The 43-meter long sky high ladder is stretched over an abyss some 700 meters below. Climbers who've made it until the via ferrata at the summit of Donnerkogel are rewarded with a sensational view over the Alps.

suzy brookshire: Some people want that kind of challenge and rush which I can understand to a point, but I'm good with just climbing up a trail.
Those trails (via ferrate in english) usually end at a point where you just can walk down. If it was the same way down you would have to cross people all the time. That would ruin the fun. Also climbing down is most often more difficult than up.

It's a fair point. Regardless of how strong it is, once enough people fall/impact it/weather effects it, it will evennntuallyyy need to be replaced? Who has calculated that?
I wouldn't have built the ladder by the lowest bidder.............
Crazy to think that all those area were climbed free before the stakes & wires were installed. Amazing view.
Well, not really. You climb, install a bolt assembly, clip in to it. Rinse and repeat until you reach the summit. You’re only ever at a maximum of a couple meters above the nearest bolt. The only time you’d hit the ground would be from a couple meters up, falling while installing the first bolt. Falling from only a couple meters is usually minor. And falling while clipped in is not dangerous as long as your belay knows what he/she is doing.
Installing this bridge is more complicated but would never involved free soloing more than a couple meters off the ground.
@EricPeelMusic i think what he is saying, is 70 80 90 and even more years ago all that would have been climbed free hand ie NO equipment

This reminds me of a little place in the Sth. Island of New Zealand. On the West Coast called The 17 Mile. A steel rope was placed from shore out to a large rock where a few brave locals loved to fish. Tough-as-nails coal miners built it. The steel rope was over a hundred feet above the rocks and crashing waves and stretched about the same distance out to the rock. It was hand-over-hand on home made trolleys to get out to the big rock. My mother was one of maybe one or two women who ever went across. The cable has since been removed.

Being terrified of heights, seeing them on those steps had me feeling sick, but what a view.
Hey you need to face them, to get rid of this Fear. Every time I watch this, the very first thing which comes to mind is "Falling of it", but it shouldn't, the first thing which should come to our mind is "those stunning views".
There is nothing to be scared of, if you have faith in yourself. And while talking of heights, there is always some kind of Harness with us, and believe me, watching the video is more scaring then doing it by yourself. I saw same sort of Video which was shot close to my neighbourhood, I was very scared at the first sight, but when I actually went to that place, and saw other people doing it as well, most of my Fear was already Gone, I followed my fellows and did it. The very first step is the Last step, in both the senses, with the first step, you Gain confidence and if you have enough faith on your legs and Shoes, you would surely make it. You won't fear the remaining steps. In the other sense, you will get scared with that very first step and eventually, you would leave it. So in both the senses, first step is the last step. So hey, be chill, have Faith in yourself, and no height will stop you. Remember one thing, this process would take time, I started by siting on the edge of my roof and slowly, I am making it on Rocks. I am really excited for that day, when I would be fearless of all the heights.

As an American, the strangest thing about doing this climb for me was the total lack of liability concern. You don't need to sign any waivers, or even buy a ticket to climb this...you literally just walk up to the route and go. There's no gate or even a sign at the start either. One of the cooler climbs I've done, and an entirely different endeavor than any via ferrata route in the states--and there are hundreds more in the general vicinity of this one. 10/10 recommend.
Kuudos to you for doing something I could never😂
Liability for something like this is rather simple here in austria. If you fall because of lack of skill, its your own fault. If you fall because some gear was breaking, whoever put that piece of gear there is at fault. Problem is, you'd have to prove it was the gear's fault and not you "abusing" it. Also, while technically you could sue whoever is in charge of that but that won't get you much aside from maybe a spot somewhere towards the end of local newspapers. The general consens here is "you do dangerous stuff, prepare and take care of you yourself. if you die, its your own fault for even doing that stuff or for not properly preparing yourself. Oh and of course everyone else at the towns pub would have done better even though they never even have put one step into whatever hobby killed you." Greetings from Vienna-Austria and much respect for climbing that. I don't have the guts for something like that. I rater ride enduro or sail offshore.

If you want to work up to something like that, there are many ways to gradually build your tolerance for heights and improve your fitness level.
For those who wonder how we via ferrata enthusiasts go down from the summit , it is thru the hiker’s trail is a way to go down because if you’ll go down the same way you climbed up…you’ll only block the way for those people who are climbing up…I had several experiences before which I had to go down to make way for climbers who suddenly decided to discontinue their climb and I didn’t like it…the only way for via ferrata is to climb up that is why you should be sure that you really want to climb up to the summit and you know your own ability before you start via ferrata if you don’t want to be a hassle to your fellow climbers.
As I have seen in the video, Donnerkogel Himmelsleiter is stable in compare to Felix Himmelsleiter in Wegscheid ( also in Austria ) but I highly recommend Felix Himmelsleiter to people who are into adrenaline satisfaction.
I have hiked to Donnerkogel before …I supposed to climbed up there thru Himmelsteiter but I have seen there were a colony of via ferrata enthusiasts, so I decided to hike up there thru footpath but the footpath is not easy either as you still need to climb up to rocks without harness.

WOW! My hands are sweating just watching you Axel! Amazing video!
Been climbing and caving for several decades - did it professionally as a soldier and as civilian. If there's one thing I've learnt, is that it's not the height, it's the idea of falling that scares people. Practice falling safely; remove the fear of what happens on/during a fall.
Agreed, though I wouldn't practise falling on a ferrata set (and certainly *never* on static rope!), as those aren't meant to be reused once you take a good fall. Best to sign up for a climbing course and get the experience there. The bit of general climbing experience you then get can't hurt either.
I agree about the "fear of falling" vs the "fear of heights". I have a fear of falling, but routinely earn good money climbing sailboat masts for maintenance. I can get paid $125 for climbing to the top of a mast to replace a light bulb. What sets my mind at ease is having two halyards (primary and backup), a five-point climbing harness (not a 2x10 plank on a rope), and my own safety line I wrap around the mast. I'm confident in my skills and gear and enjoy the view from 80' up.
Last time I checked, falling 700 meters (2300 feet) cannot be done safely. Even 700 feet would not be survivable since 100’ has a 100% mortality rate. But your experience sounds interesting, and most importantly, critical in surviving lesser falls than this one. It must have taken a lot of courage and tactical skills to make it through this training intact.
@@yosemitegirlCA A whipper at 100m is extremely dangerous. Yet you're going to fall during climbing, learning what and how to act during the fall, will help prevent injuries.
Absolutely. I do trekking and as long as I'm "safe", which means I'm walking paths relatively wide or I don't have to jump and rely on rocks I'm not sure are safe, my vertigo doesn't activate, I'm not going to "fall" so I'm good.
Now, the moment I have to jump a 1 meter jump, 15 meters drop. (I still don't know how i did that twice) I'm scared.
I once climbed rocks next to a waterfall, they were dry but the fall was really really high and definitely deadly if something went wrong. I cried after I reach the top and the waterfall because of the anxiety built up.
Or my legs go weak when I have to cross a really small path to both side implying death or broken bones if you fall.
My brain just doesn't like it, so I tend to accept my limits, I love going into nature but if my legs go no, I go no.
Can't say you can practice falling for this kind of thing tho.
I have fallen while walking, or from top beds, I am pretty calm when it happens, I let myself go, automatically put my hands in the right place, nearly no scratch. But does are not high risks activities

"This ladder is NOT for Beginners"
Or for people with functioning self preservation instincts.
Not everyone wants to live their life in a card box.
@Immortal bruh what part of enjoying mountain climbing makes your existence empty
@@amazon7891 cardboard* box.
@Immortal Sorry you live in a basement all day and don't know the concept of hobbies.
Amazing Video. Nice Guys, they speak about realistic feelings.
Is there a behind the scenes on how you built that ladder? That would be fun to watch.
Sat on my sofa watching this I’m feeling anxious!!
ok, whoever edited this video chose some good ass music. Undercover Martyn and feels like summer? bruh mighty fine choices even tho he did blue ball me with the Undercover Martyn song not having that break into the song.
wow amazing adrenaline
Go work construction like industrial iron worker or building plants and stuff scrapers and bridges and especially factory type plants you get to climb up very sketchy structures only sketchy due to the way your footing has to be get all the adrenaline you want then for me I'll stay a safety guy
I love that you have the exact same music tastes that I did during that time, even though we're living on different continents.
They built very beautiful mountains in Austria!
