I have an A. O. Smith hot water heater that was had to be reset almost daily. Water would be super hot for a few hours then go cold . This video helped me change the element out. Thank you for the great video. Very good instructions.

I've changed several blown elements. The u shaped ones can turn into a pretzel when they blow and are really hard to get out. I much prefer the straight ones.

The cold water pipe supplies the water heater.

Some heater element threads are so corroded they will not come unscrewed. DO yourself a favor and TRY that $7 socket and make sure it CAN be removed BEFORE buying a replacement element (and check for a new water heater availability in your area because you would be surprised how inventories can vary). The best advise I can give is to toss the old one, and buy exactly the same unit if possible as it makes reinstallation a LOT easier if the unit is old.

sherrcon Yes you would need to drain the tank. The water would come out if you don't.

I just changed mine without draining it. There are a a few tricks but it was not difficult.

that's great...but every so often, i need to drain it for sediments clogging the tank...the last one had so much garbage coming out of the tank...

You do realize it's not a "HOT" water heater. If the water is already hot, why heat it? It's just a water heater.Good video though - thanks!

12-25-18) yes this happened on Christmas day ) i know this video is few
years old, but i have a question, the element(used only a few weeks old
long story) that was tested before it was placed in out 8 year old hot
water tank, he has done this before , any ways the one he replaced is
the lower element , so the tank fills up , the upper element clicks off
after a time , so i was wondering how long will it will take for the
lower element to click off ?, 30 min, 45 min , or more ?...... the one
he tested before putting in, was tested fine ......

sorry for the same comment on both of these videos

I’m not sure how long it would take for it to click off, it may depend on how many gallons the tank holds.

@@HomeownerRepair , its a 50 gallon tank, i took a shower today at 9:56am got out of shower at 10:14am, i set the shower at warm at first for 5 minutes showering , then turned the shower knob alittle more so the shower was kinda hot, so i was roughly in the shower for about 20 minutes give or take.... while showering, i did not have to change it all, it held........ so i guess i will know more till he takes a shower and then goes down in the basement to check on things....... any thoughts ?
