Hope you enjoy our 3rd epic running video on the slopes at Mont Tremblant! For the best viewing experience, please enjoy the higher resolution 1440p60 version in Google's Chrome browser. We’ll be back soon with regular outdoor adventure trips and vlogs, but we wanted to share what we’ve been doing for fun during our winters - this was actually filmed a year ago (just haven’t been able to edit it until more recently)… when we decided to try filming another epic running video on the downhill ski runs at Tremblant in the snow. To our surprise, it turned out to be wildly fun and incredibly exhilarating running through the moguls! I tend to get a lot of questions about my gear when I make these running videos and I wanted to mention that no drones or motorized vehicles were used in the filming - just me awkwardly running up the hill next to Julia, with a Hero4 Black Edition on a 3-axis gimbal at the end of a long counterweighted pole, which took lots of practice to hold smoothly at the balance point while running, and then skiing down beside her. Afterwards, the shots were warp-stabilized in After Effects, where I painstakingly rotoscoped 10,000+ individual frames of video at 60fps (more if you count the shots that didn’t end up in the video), to remove the tracking points on Julia and other foreground elements, so I could get the absolute smoothest track possible on the background. Yeah, kinda crazy, lol… but I wanted viewers to think they were smooth drone shots right next to her. The clips were then round-tripped back into FCPX where I did a lot of rotational keyframing to either hold the horizon level or smooth the roll axis even more. Thanks for watching, and looking forward to more outdoor adventures coming soon! :)
(Technically) Nicely done.. 👍🏼 Here's some food for thought though.. I have just finished rendering a (lousy, compared to yours) video in 25 fps because I noticed Sir Neistat now renders his in 24. And as it seems.. Filming in these rates seem to positively affect my experience of viewing moving objects. But frankly, I can't see (too) much of a difference of moving objects in 25 fps and 60 fps.. However (as I am watching the internet on a 4K monitor), I *do* spot the difference between (HD) 1080p on the one side, and (SHD) 1440p or 2160p on the other. So to make a long story short.. it's (now) my experience that _a great looking video has nothing to do with frame rate_ but it has *everything* to do with the SHD/UHD format/dimensions the film was shot in. Despite of moving objects in the video.. The only time I would probably consider shooting/filming in a higher frame rate is to afterwards render to slow motion scenes.
Hey Rudy, thanks for your thoughts. I tend to shoot native 24p when I'm storytelling or vlogging, though I shot and delivered this piece in 60p for a lot of specific technical reasons. Filming in 60p effectively reduces the amount of camera movement between individual frames of video, and also increases the shutter speed, both of which result in more clearly defined image detail, giving me more accurate tracking information to work with per second, and a cleaner track in After Effect's warp stabilizer (the raw clips straight out of the camera are actually a little jittery / shaky because I'm running so fast with it over uneven terrain). Early 24p test shots stabilized in AE resulted in smeary looking edges, and more wobbly results in the image, so 60p was definitely the way to go for this project. Most pro cameras that shoot 60p allow you to adjust your shutter speed accordingly to account for your use in post whether it be realtime playback or conformed to slow-motion... however, because the GoPro's shutter automatically speeds up to account for the higher frame rate (particularly on a bright sunny day with changing light which makes it difficult to use an ND filter), converting those frames with really high shutter speed into realtime 24p afterwards gives it a really harsh "staccato" look, that looks unnatural, almost as if it's flickering or stuttering when there's a lot of subject motion. It would be different of course if I was conforming the 60p to 24p for creating slow motion, but my goal was to make these shots look as smooth or "drone-like" as possible using lots of detailed stabilization in post, and my eye could see a huge difference between exporting in 24p and 60p. Long story short, it really depends on your camera and how you intend to use it in post :)
Thanks for answering.. 👍🏼 I guess I forgot the wobbly effect of (software) stabilisation.. I am still trying to learn how to deal with that.. It's probably best to have a good hardware stabiliser but that's still too much €/$ for me, for now.. Decreasing this effect by pumping up the fps sounds smart as you have effectively more frames to work with / ignore in post.. But apart from software stabilisation I guess I will stick to my previously comments.. 😋
Thanks Sean! Yeah, Julia was a trooper - I had lots of warm layers, though she kept going through the cold winds while wearing just a few, and it dipped down to -35°C at one point! She certainly has a lot of grit! :D
I have to say that was incredibly impressive, on the way down, for Julia to avoid just tumbling down the hill. It must take some practice to prevent that from happening. Great vid Chris, excellent camera work!
Creativity + great camera game + editing on point + music that rocks + dope runners/skieurs = epic vidoe. Thank you very much for this vidoe girls dope energy right there!!!
So i'm in my second year of college and these past couple of months have probably been some of the worst times in my life. However, i stumbled upon your channel a week ago or so and your videos are amazing. They really keep me smiling through this rough patch. Thanks for the hard work you and Julia put into this! :)
Thanks for watching - glad to hear they make you smile! :) I definitely went through some rough patches while I was away at school too. There can be a lot of pressure to do well at times. I also found it difficult to ask for help when I needed it... though reaching out to those around me for support helped me get through a lot, and I found those around me were actually happy to help me work through the things I was having difficulties with. Hang in there! :)
That was pretty intense, thought Julia lost it a couple of times going downhill but nice save. Love the tandem skiing at the end, so cute. Be careful Chris, that Julia looked like she was trying to cop a feel!!! 😚 🇨🇦
Well, that's different!! While I sure can see myself recreating some of your epic canoe adventures, I will respectfully decline the inclined running! ;-) Truly epic stuff!! Way to go, Julia!! And Chris!! Great to see some new stuff! Cheers!
Great to hear from you, Chris! We'll be heading up to the Park first weekend in May. I won't be posting video - certainly not up to your standards, but I shall let you know about the trip! All the best to the two of you!
Cool! Hope you have a great trip! We were thinking the same thing, though it now looks like there's going to be snow in the forecast... I just have a 3-season sleeping bag, so we may postpone our canoe trip. Keep us posted on how yours goes! :)
Your videos are awesome. This one is a top favorite. kind of hard to choose a favorite when I like them all. The music, the editing, the amazing views, and you both are funny. I live in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA - Best Wishes and Congratulations on the Wedding.
Awesome filming Chris, and congratulations to you both, i noticed Julia has taken your last name in the end titles :D Congrats guys, love you both, awesome partnership in life and videography :D
When I was a kid, my sibs and I would do small downhill's on skates. Not good for the skates, and dad was ticked off for having to sharpen them so much, but we had a blast. The old knees wouldn't take it now. Good run.
omg!! this is one of the best vid iv ever watch.. both of you are so amazing and talented.. God bless you stay healthy and happy.. your new subs from Philippines.. Mabuhay!!😉😊 (hope you can visit Philippines soon)
Thanks for watching! You may be watching it in Apple's Safari, which doesn't support RUclips's new higher resolution codecs yet... but you should be able to view the 1440p60 version in Google's Chrome browser. Please let me know if you still can't see it in Chrome :)
Incredible footage Chris! You mention in the description about a HERO4 + 3-axis gimbal on a stick with weights? I must see this contraption LOL. No plans for future videos about the gear you´re using?! Thank you for sharing this, very cool stuff! (thumbs up)
Thanks so much Magnus! lol, it was actually an old broom pole that I taped the handle of the gimbal to, and then I taped a few objects to the opposite end until I had just the right amount of weight to balance it in the middle. There's a shot of us skiing at the end where I'm holding it in the other hand (...though the counterweight might not be visible). I found the best shots came when I held it loosely and let the camera follow its own momentum :)
Yep got a glimpse of it at the end! Brilliant and somewhat cheap solution LOL. Outcome was really cool, will experiment with this idea. Was it hard to find the balance on the pole?
EPIC video!! 1+ Suscriber. P.S. Nope, your stile is not equal, the same or look a like Casey's one. Keep the good work. Ah, and i wonder how you make that close shot to the runner feet on the move. :)
Thank you! I'd like to submit this one to a few film festivals, so I put a lot more time into the edit... though we've got a big trip coming up and I hope get back to a regular schedule soon :)

Thanks Joey! :D

You're an artist of the purest form. Building the body to perfect form and function and making movies in what has become my favorite outdoors channel.

Great vid Chris, excellent camera work!
Thanks so much! Julia took a few tumbles, but she's a trooper! :)

You were right. That was unbelievably stable. Geez.
Finally a new video! I can only get it to 1080p60 though. Maybe youtube doesn't support 1440p60?
Thanks for watching! You may be watching it in Apple's Safari, which doesn't support RUclips's new higher resolution codecs yet... but you should be able to view the 1440p60 version in Google's Chrome browser. Please let me know if you still can't see it in Chrome :)

Nice! It was a little tricky the first few times, but we practiced around our home town and got into a rhythm by our 3rd run in the snow :)
Awesome vid.
Thanks Lionel! :)
I admire you so so much. I can't do that anymore. Everything you do is my dream. Maybe one last comeback for me ? Inspired!
