  • Drumhead service and march up to the Guards Memorial on the Irish Guards Black Sunday, held on Sunday 10th March 2024.
Also, this will probably be my last new video for several weeks, unfortunately on the way to start videoing the return of the parade I had an accident and tripped over, resulting in a bad shoulder injury that could see me out off action for a month or more. I would like to express my thanks to the couple of passers-by who offered me assistance and to several of my friends who also came to my aid, it was very much appreciated, although at the time I was very annoyed that I had missed the return of the parade and was also feeling really embarrassed by the whole thing.
I will be back with new videos as soon as I can.

I've just popped back here for another peek at this fine video and spotted this update. Thank you for it, I have been wondering how you've been getting on and glad to hear of your determination to resume. I'm something of a late arrival when it comes to RUclips but I've become a firm fan of your videos in that short time. I, and others, will be glad when you're back, but don't rush before you're ready😎 Take care.

Hello Mr B!! I've only just heard you'd posted a Message in here. I'm so glad you're on the Road to Recovery. Like all the Regulars in Team B (Baton) I've missed you Badly, it's Just not the same. Apart from the Selfish Reasons of not seeing the London Changes, I miss you because as far as I'm Concerned you're a Friend & I don't like it when a Friend is Unwell or is having a Painful time because of an Injury.
Life Continues in you Tube of course & I know there's Hundreds of People who are asking about you. I did toy with the idea of telling them the Black Sunday was so Cold & Miserable, you'd gone to get Shelter & a few Bevies to Warm you up & You'd got Brahms & List & gone Arse over Apex, but I didn't. It was that lil Devil that sometimes Slips Out. Nevermind but I will admit the Temptation was very Real 😅😂🤣🤣🤣
You take very Good Care of yourself, 🤕🤒🤕 and get plenty of Rest😴😴😣😩😪 & don't come back until you're 💯 %! Big (but Gentle) Hugz 🤗🤗🤗😘

@@vickyRoyalHistory Hi Vicky, thank you for the post and comments I miss everyone on here. I can tell you I'm missing posting these videos something cronic as well, plus meeting the regulars who I've got to know around there on Guard Change days. I wish I had been Brahms and Liszt I might not have done so much damage, still as they say it is what it is. I'm hoping I will be able to drive again in a couple of weeks in which case normal service will be resumed. (fingers crossed )

Hi@@vickyRoyalHistory , no, not until next year ;-)
Seriously though, I used "similar" in a loose sense to give myself "wriggle room". I can confidently say that neither Mr B or I are in the "13-29" bracket! I've never (knowingly) met Mr B, but it doesn't take too much detective work to work out who most of the main "filmers" are. I think Delvin is pretty good at it!

More than a few in attendance, especially your good self, earned a stiff drink or two when that sopping wet Black Sunday parade ended. Sorry about the injury you sustained in the line of duty. There is something humiliating about falling in public, but the outcome could have been so much worse. Best wishes for a full and quick recovery. The Band of the Irish Guards ought to send a get-well card, considering all the videos you've done of their performances. You really have to hand it to them, even in terrible weather conditions, their rendition of Paddy McGinty's Goat with McNamara's Band, can lift sagging spirits. Their Ulster Division and the P&D tunes worked pretty well too. Hope their music helps keep your spirits up as you recuperate.

Another Excellent video!! I'm very sorry to hear about Sirs incident! Wishing you a speedy recovery! Always lovely to see the Micks Past and Present marching together! Well done to the Band for Braving the Inclement weather!
    The marches played were,
    (Band of the Irish Guards)
    1) 11:22-Blue Plume
    2) 14:01-Ulster Division
(12 Co. Irish Guards Drums & Pipes)
    3) 16:48-Company Marches of the 1st Battalion Irish Guards
¹ The Star of the County Down
    ² Holy Ground
    ³ Boys of Wexford
⁴ The Green Glens of Atrim
    ⁵ The South Down Militia
    4) 19:34-Paddy's McGinty's Goat & McNamara's Band
    (Some additional points of interest)
    1) 0:04-SDM Gareth Chambers MVO is instructing Drummers how to make a Drum Altar
    2) at 12:29 you can hear the Time-Beater signal to the Band to lower the Volume, I believe this was done as to not disturb a Church Service at the Guards Chapel.
    3) At 16:47 and 20:10 onwards, if you look closely one can see that most of the Woodwind section of the band isn't playing. As many of you may know by now, these instruments as the name suggests are made of wood. Wood and Water don't mix. Thus the Musicians have a trick up their sleeves (Pun Intended), Clarinetists and Flutists usually tuck their Instruments up their Tunic/Greatcoats Sleeve. Quite surprising there's even a Band, considering the Inclement weather. This would be enough to call a Wet Mount in Changing the Guard.

Thank you for turning out on this soggy day and recording this event for us. It’s a fabulous video. Very emotive. The band played beautifully, a great selection of marches. The pipes are something else, adding almost mournful extras, love them. In fact loved all the music , I could even sing along to the hymn (just be glad no one could hear me😏)

A very Soggy Day for the Irish Guards Black Sunday Parade. The Black Sunday Parades for each of the 5 Infantry Regiments of the Household Division are always Very Moving, no matter what the Weather, but when it's like this it makes it even more Sombre.
For those of you who've not seen a Black Sunday Parade, I'll point out some things that we've been discussing over the last Couple of Months with some Newer Members of our Little Community as this is a good chance to see them.
A Drum Altar has been built by the Drummers of the Corps of Drums, assisted by SDM Gareth Chambers MVO who was a Very Good Drummer Himself before becoming a Drum Major.
He then Leads the Band of the Irish Guards onto the Parade & they are Joined by Turlough Mór (Pronounced Tur - Lock - More) Affectionately Named "Seamus", The Irish Wolfhound who is The Regimental Mascot, Nicely turned out in his own Athol Grey Great Coat, which Sports the Regiment's Badge & Motto, the eight pointed star of the 'Most Illustrious Order of St. Patrick'. In the centre is a shamrock with the State Imperial Crown embossed on each leaf. Behind the shamrock is the cross of St. Patrick & Surrounding the Centre is the Regiments Motto, Quis Separabit?, meaning "Who shall separate us?" (Thanks to The Household Division Web Site for the Description 'Retrieved 2023').
Seamus is a Very Unique Mascot as he is the Only Regimental Mascot in the British Army who has Permission to Lead his Regiment on Parade.
There is a Short Service, called A Drumhead Service. A Hymn is played & The assembled Irish Guards & 3 Groups of Veterans, The Officers Wearing Bowler Hats & Carrying Furled Umbrellas, The Other Ranks Veterans of !st Battalion Irish Guards & The Other Ranks Veterans of the 2nd Battalion Irish Guards. Although the 2nd Battalion was Put into "Suspended Animation" after the 2nd WW, they have been reinstated for Short Periods when needed, so there are still some Veterans who attend Certain Parades.
I've Mentioned before about SDM Gareth Chambers Saluting when ever he leads a Band or The Mass Bands past the Guards Chapel. In this Video you see him salute at about 12:25 & at 12:30, you can see the Statue inside the Fence. That's Field Marshal The Earl Alexander of Tunis. He was Highly Decorated in Both World Wars as an Officer in The Irish Guards, his Service in North Africa & Sicily in WW2 Saw him promoted to Field Marshal & after the War he was appointed as The Governor General of Canada. He became the First Lord Lieutenant of Greater London in 1965. He Died in 1969. He was & still is Very Well Regarded & Respected by the Irish Guards. The Salute From SDM Gareth Chambers MVO, is Directed at him as a Sign of that Respect.
The Irish Guards DOM Capt. Peter Brydon is Directing the Band today & you can see him in his Double Breasted Athol Gray Greatcoat & Taller Bearskin with a Large Blue Plume, Marching in the Rank behind the Bass Drum & Cymbals. He was also the Conductor for the Band during the Drumhead Service.
Sgt David Lockwood, the Man with the Lungs of Kevlar & his Bass Trombone (3 Pipes over the Shoulder & a larger Bell), is also Leading the Trombone Section today From the Centre of the First Rank, #3 from either end & you can see him Signalling the 'Drop' & 'Rise' to the other Trombones when they Rest & then start playing again at about 12:56.
The Guards Memorial is Opposite Horse Guards Parade & it is the Destination of Every Guards Regiment on the Black Sunday Parade. Prayers will be said by The Chaplin, Wreathes will be Laid, there'll be 2 Mins Silence observed by the Parade as they remember Irish Guards who have Fallen in the line of Duty in every War & Conflict since 1900, when the Irish Guards Regiment was Formed at the Behest of Queen Victoria.
The 2 mins Silence will be Signalled by a Bugler Playing Last Post & ended by a Bugler Blowing Revile. The Ode will be Read, "They Shall not Grow Old as those who are left Grow Old, Age will not Weary Them or The Years Condemn, At the Going Down of The Sun & In the Morning, We will Remember Them." The Parade Will Come to Attention & if it's the Same Format as Other Years, They will March Back to Barracks, Entering to "Let Erin Remember".
My Apologies if The Ode I've Posted Differs in any way to The one Recited by the British Legion or The Regiments, I've Posted the NZ Version, which Should be the Same but one can Never be Sure.
This was an Excellent Video, Well Up to Mr Bs Normal High Standard, but the Price He's Paid to get it for Us is Very High Indeed.
Get Well Soon Mr B, I'll Carry Out Chitty Bang Bang Watch for You!
