The term Rasta or Rastafari comes from the title of 'Ras Tafari Makonnen,' which was conferred on former Ethiopian Emperor, His Majesty, King Haille Selassie. In Ethiopian semantic languages, the word Ras means Prince, and Haille Selassie's personal name was Tafari Makonnen. In this video, we meet 5 Rastas and discuss Rastafari culture's principles and beliefs, the Rasta way of Cooking and Eating, as well as the ideal Rastafari way of life.
    ~The Ital Diet
As a movement, Rastas seek to produce food naturally and believe that all food must be completely natural and raw.

    ~About Magriza Made Me Cook:
» Magriza is slang for uGogo (Grandmother in isiNdebele) and the name of the show is derived from Prince's inspiration for falling in love with cooking; his grandmother. The goal of MMMC is to document and serve Africa's diverse food culture, one dish at a time. We believe that Africa has got unique meals that ought to be talked about, and most importantly, cooked consistently. We believe in the values of Ubuntu, Respect, Creativity and Minimalism.

He was born in 1892 as Tafari Makonnen and his baptismal name was Haile Selassie. In 1916 (correct me if I'm wrong) he became Ras, which literally means 'head' and is often translated as 'prince'. 'Tafari' means 'awe inspiring'. In 1928 he became Negus Tafari, King Tafari. In 1930 he became Emperor and he took his baptismal name as his imperial name: Emperor Haile Selassie the First. 'Haile Selassie' means 'Power of the Trinity'.

The translation from a movement born in the west is profound. I still heard some lines from my very first documentation... These brethren may not be able to say it well; but they live it. Africa yes... Look for the ones who stick with it. Values and culture can be hard to discern in our modern society. Free up the herb, for the developed world will leave us further behind...

Rastafari was a nationbuilder, a institution builder and created jobs for the generation behind him. Are we still living this example?
