- Ten years ago, to celebrate their success at Le Mans with the diesel powered R10 V12, Audi decided to create a V12 diesel powered road car. Only one car ever received the engine, the already luxurious Q7. At almost £100,000 the Q7 V12 was £40,000 more expensive than the next cheapest model, and more even than a Cayenne Turbo.
Not content with that, Audi also introduced their Exclusive Concept, which may or may not ever have sold - but they made one, and today they've let me loose in it!

One time in a fancy neighborhood a Mercedes S-class slowed for me in case I was crossing the street. Behind me, an Audi A8 was pulling out into the street. The two yachts came within inches of crashing into each other because they were watching a pedestrian.

I believe that the Touareg, unlike this one, is a very very capable off roader. I got the V10 Tdi. For other’s here the W12 was a petrol engine and the R50 was a V10Tdi suped-up version (with 350hp instead of 313 of the regular V10, and 850nm of torque instead of 750nm).

It had V12 TDI quattro badge and also it has a different rear bumper than the regular Q7. On top of that it was a swis license plates and they dont put stickers on regular cars, they drive the real things.

My dad and i test drove this car up some windy german mountain roads and on the Autobahn. Felt surreal how quickly this giant machine was moving around

The way he's hammering it, I'm surprised it's that high. The regular gas V12 would have been single digit in a 3 ton vehicle.
It's quite as expected - my boss' Range Rover 3.6 TDV8 with just over half the power of this has averaged 22mpg and he doesn't floor it...

Probably a test bed for fitting the V12 tdi into the Bentley range of cars.

It's amazing what Audi was able do with this car .... I can only imagine what the V8 Bi-Turbo in the sq7 and sq8 is able to do... I stand corrected... but I think its actually 3 turbos ....

There is a Q7 V12 TDI in my town and the owner got an aftermarket custom exhaust for that thing. The noise coming off that engine is unbelievable
Years ahead of the likely BMW X7M. In Australia with all that torque, you can use this Audi to pull up tree stumps, roots and all, after you chopped the tree down. Fabulous.
I remember Toyota australia did an advert for the hilux going around pulling up tree stumps and fence posts and stuff, and the catchphrase was "bugger" because the car did the job too well. You can probably find it here on RUclips somewhere

I prefer this to the Bentley SUV. I like your honest enthusiasm. A great watch.
The car is simply a state of an art, as simple as that. Its important to say, that you get performance of bi turbo V12 engine combined with diesel efficiency. And in the long run it makes perfect sense if you travel quite a lot.

I’m imagining it right now and it sounds pretty good, loads of hp and torque and not needing to fill up every couple hundred miles sounds like an excellent combination.

@@diffypoo It wouldn't be any faster than the V10, it would be far heavier because this engine weighs like 400Kg, it would be much more expensive defeating the purpose of any fuel savings because no one buys an R8 to drive 30k miles a year. And it simply wouldn't fit which is the reason they gave up on it, the engine is so big they had to lengthen the chassis of the prototype to drop it in.
Just leave truck engines in trucks.

I've got a S65 AMG V12 with 738pft, so I know what that Audi is all about, despite its weight. It's simply a kick in the back when floring it.

A V12 diesel makes sense, since the straight six has long been the diesel standard.

I'm in Denmark and a v10 diesel Touareg towing passed by me and that was such a weird sounding diesel haha
I loved my mk1 Q7. Mapped to 300+ the V6 pulled like a train. The V12 must be a treat that's hard to beat!
That Q7 V12 is my dream machine since they came out and always wanted one. and I still find them very practical. I Iove the power and smoothness of one. Wish I had money. I dunno what sort of narrow minded people that would find it pointless. Hopefully id win the lotto just to have one of them. German engineering at its finest and its amazing to know they can go to extreme lengths. There's always a place in my heart for one. thank you for reviewing this beauty!
I do like it when a car manufacturer lets the engineers off the lead to go nuts and make something stupid. You can imagine the conversation by the kettle:
Engineer 1: "I was thinking we could stuff a massive engine in a Q7 for laugh"
Engineer 2: "What about the V10 from the S8?"
Engineer 1: "Too predictable, I'm feeling a bit crazy"
Engineer 3: "What about the diesel V10 we put in the Toureg?"
Engineer 1: "But we already put that in a VW, we can't do the same thing just with an Audi badge, that's what we always do."
Engineer 4: "So add more cylinders and make it a V12!"
All: "HELL YES!"
Engineer 1: "I wonder if we could fit that in an R8..."

I remember first seeing the V12 Q7 on Top Gear against the equally non sensical BMW X5M. Both absolutely ludicrous over the top cars and yet for all that I loved the Germans for making them.....just because they could....bloody expensive laughs though, even back then, maybe 10 years ago they were £76k (BMW) and £96k (Audi).
A little bit irrelevant but have you considered the Lexus ls430 over the Mercedes s class I mention this due to the purchase of the s500 vs the. S320cdi I would love to see a UK owners impressions / owners experience and whether the reliability stands true

To be frank, I dreamed about this car as I'm a diesel enthusiast and self combusting v12 sounded very much of my liking, *but* the engine with the chargers and so weights around a tonne and that contributes to the under steer. I'm down for v8 diesel, gunning for similar output after a stage 2 mod.

I remember Clarkson's review of this vehicle - he was equally as baffled by its existence. But it seems Audi's timing for the release of this vehicle was a bit off as we all know what happened in 2009 - that's probably why so few were sold.

Technically it isn't the only roadgoing V12 diesel. Tatra was using V12 (air cooled) diesels for a long time back in the day. But it sure is the only car with a V12 diesel

Jay, I have the V6 twin-turbo diesel version of this car. While I really enjoy it, with an extra 6 cylinders it would be a real riot!

Hi Jay, I have an apologie to offer. When I read the title of this vid I thought Oh dear, Jay has cocked-up with the engine config as Audi's biggest diesel is a V10. But no, so I humbly beseech thee oh noble one, forgive me. Apart from that, another great vis Jay mate, well done for getting hold of this glorious follie of a behemoth.
On the autobahn once i was cruising along at a leisurely 135 mph in the left lane as i had just overtaken a slower car in the center lane. I was just getting ready to shift back when 2 of those V12 monsters roared up on me furiously flashing their headlamps. I accelerated to expedite my lane change and as soon as i was out of the way they roared off leaving me quite humbled.
When I heard that they were only 30 Q7 Exclusive in the UK I directly check the french online car market cause I had seen lots of Q7 V12 out on the street and I couldn't belive there were only 30 exclusive one and I found at least five of them (including two having a 4 seats configuration) for sale for as low as £25k
I dont think there are 30 Exclusive its more like 30 V12s, the full exclusive as here is very rare
