      thanks it really didn't take that much to get ''THIS OLD OUTBOARD'' (haha shameless plug) up and running. it just amazes me that people let these things get in such terrible condition. but, that's a good thing for me, or I wouldn't be able to buy them so cheap!

I have an 89 9.9 longshaft that I bought last year and rebuilt the carb, fuel pump and now need to do some other maintenance i.e. water pump, gear oil and prop seal before salmon season sneaks up on me. I use it as a trolling kicker on my 17' fiberglass boat I like the power it has! Thanks again for the great info!

    • @THISOLDOUTBOARD1
      @THISOLDOUTBOARD1  3 года назад +2

      Stop using starter fluid. it has no lubricants in it. Pull the carb and clean it. Your slow speed idle circuit is probably clogged. Heres my video on carb cleaning ruclips.net/video/401zCRctu1c/видео.html

    Where do you find all these motors? Here in southeast LA. small outboards are non existing. The 2 I restored are both Yankee motors and shipping killed any good deal I might have gotten.

    For the transmission, mine is in the forward position while off...can I force it back to neutral without damaging it? I tried pulling it back but it feels like there is resistance when doing it. I want to avoid damaging it...but I need to have it in neutral prior to start? Any advice?

    • @THISOLDOUTBOARD1

      Hey. Try turning the flywheel by hand as you shift it. It should pop back into neutral. If its on a stand, use your foot and turn the prop as you shift it. Thanks

      hey. i dont think you need to pull the flywheel off. the starter is bolted to the bypass cover on this model. try taking out the top two bolts and it should slide right out. hope that helps. thx

    Needing advice on what causes "this motor" to run perfectly BUT occasionally the thing will buck as if you just hit a log or something.

    • @THISOLDOUTBOARD1
      @THISOLDOUTBOARD1  4 года назад +1

      Hey. In my experience its been in the shift linkage and bumping out of gear. I thought I was hitting turtles! Or the clutch dog is wearing out. I would start with the linkage, it mat be slipping a the connection at the gear case. Thanks !

    • @thomashanke4845
      @thomashanke4845 4 года назад

      @@THISOLDOUTBOARD1 Thank you.... but it does not come out of gear, purrs along excellently then the whole motor jumps for a split second and continues right along. It will do this at any speed and seems like 1 - 2 minutes between. The whole thing has been cleaned top to bottom, inside and out, all new fluid.

    • @THISOLDOUTBOARD1
      @THISOLDOUTBOARD1  4 года назад +1

      @@thomashanke4845 Yeah I know. Like I said, I thought I was hitting turtles. It was on a 25hp. The brass connector on the shift linkage connecting the upper and lower rods was worn and the upper rod was slipping slightly and causing it to not lock into forward gear, thus creating the bang/boom or hit something situation. Thats what happened in my situation. Also these lower rods going into the gearcase are screwed in. If they become screwed in or out to far will also cause issues. It usually happens by accident when the gearcase gets removed. There are measurements for the shaft and should be in the manual, although I've never had to look it up for a 9.9 but you can get the manual at boatinfo.no. Also check out leeroysramblings.com, everything you ever need to know is at leeroys. Thats where I learned everything. I believe he talks about this situation and things to look for. Thanks again

    I have the same year 9.9 Johnson but it runs for a minute then stalls! I have done everything to the motor new fuel pump new fuel lines rebuilt the carb, new thermostat, new coils, new power pack, new plugs. It just wants to die after a minute or two. FKN confusing

    • @THISOLDOUTBOARD1
      @THISOLDOUTBOARD1  2 года назад

      Hey Mike. Thanks for tuning in. Ok a super tune up sounds good! And a carb rebuild. Did you double check your high speed orifice/jet in the carb bowl? They often get overlooked. No amount of carb cleaner spray will work if its clogged , it needs to be poked out and smokin clean or you won't go nowhere! Basically you'll have to go back to the basics. What may seem like a fuel issue could be an ignition problem and vice versa. These things will drive you crazy! Check that high speed jet, and float position, look for air leaks, go through the entire fuel system from the tank back to the plugs. Did you do a compression test? If you can't find any fuel issues move on to the ignition. Check all ground wires are making contact. New coils,, could have a bad one, it happens but it's rare. Try running it on one cylinder at a time, like its two separate motors, this will help narrow things down. Check cooling system, may be running hot, new t-stat may not be opening. So like I said, back to the basics. With all those new parts, something ain't right. Curious to know what you find out. Thanks again & Stay tuned !

    • @mikekmalick
      @mikekmalick 2 года назад +1

      @@THISOLDOUTBOARD1 The compression is 120 psi per cylinder and I soaked the carb overnight and ran a fine wire through all carb orifices. I also adjusted the float so it would be level when closed. I think it might be a bad fuel pump even though it is new. I am going to check it out right now! Thanks for the tips on the coils testing!

    • @THISOLDOUTBOARD1
      @THISOLDOUTBOARD1  6 лет назад +1

      its not how fast the horses are running, they all run about the same speed. its how much weight they are pulling in the wagon! get it. 10 horses can pull a 500lb wagon 20mph but 15 can pull it 21 because each horse is pulling a little less weight. i use to think that 20 horse should be twice as fast as a 10, but that's not the case. a 15 horse will push my boat 20-21 and a 25 horse will do 26-27. you also have to factor in prop pitch. if you have a 9.9 with a higher pitch prop it will buzz right by a 15 with a lower pitch.
