Ouch. Losing two out of three 14" armed battlecruisers almost back to back hurts. Losing Lion sucks, but being hit by four torpedoes up close at night is just bad luck. However, I too didn't expect the Australia would sink so quickly.
She took the first hit at 50 minutes. At 175 minutes her structure was basically gone after 18 15" hits, so the subsequent hits made her take more and more flotation damage until she sank at 218 minutes after 28 15" shell hits. There were a couple of hits to the engine room, but overall nothing stands out in particular. Sinking after 28 hits doesn't seem too crazy, but I've also seen plenty of ships survive that level of punishment with more or less the same tonnage and armor.

To be fair, if the AI's pathfinding was better, I dare say that enemy fleet would have made it safely to port.
