a long time ago in the UK the army had a tank exercise. one of the tank drivers realised he was close to his parents house so he drove it 3 miles through dense built up areas and parked it outside his parents house . his commanding officer said he should be really angry with him but he managed to handle it though all those tight spaces without hitting a thing or causing any damage at all so must be a first class driver ! ...... got to love him . lol

I was in Europe in the late 80s for a very short time and talked with some tankers I met at the ski rental shop at Ramstein, and they told me stories that were very close to this film. When this film came out, I thought of them. Then I was an Army officer several years later I realized NOTHING is scarier than soldiers in the field with time on their hands. THAT is why the leadership is always making sure you have something to do

I was over there in the early 70s, this film was light compared to what really was going on.
I served in the Army in the mid 80s in Germany. Normally I would say Hollywood sensationalized it just like they do everything. But this whole movie was reality but only jacked up half a notch. I could tell you an analog story for every incident in this film. Hell, my drivers training class STARTED with a slide show showing dozens of Army vehicles after crazy accidents in Germany.
Think of the bulk of men who join the military... They're not people who are mentally stable or emotionally mature.

Very underrated movie indeed... The casting, scenario, shooting, characters and FX are top notch. But even better is the original soundtrack. This scene mixing a completely stoned crew driving a Main Battle Tank (BMT) offroad is not only brilliant, it's unheard of! The combination of this scene with the good old rap from Dr Oktogon and Handsome Boy Modeling School is pure jubilation!!!

I was on a M110 self propelled howitzer in Germany 1988. Our driver would be stoned on hashish then run over all the mile markers on the autobahn. Somehow he never got in trouble! We tore up a lot of barley fields and had a blast!!!

For those who are wondering about why they use Leo 1 instead of M1 Abrams is because the scene is based on the story of U.S. Army soldier stationed in Stuttgart, Germany in 1989 not because they couldn't get a M1.

No, the real reason is because the US DoD didn't sponsor or support this movie in any form (as it shows the US army in a bad light).
So, the film producers had to reach out to the Germans to loan out armored vehicles for this scene, thus Leopards are portrayed in the film as american tanks.

I saw this movie when I was about 18 years old and an absolute video rental junkie. I remember it as one of the best movies I have ever seen to this day. Awesome cast, absolutely hilarious and scary at the same time. A masterpiece.

Water Delirious 100% accurate that is my eyewitness testimony. Only this wasn't a reserve unit. It is active duty in Europe in the 1980's. I only saw two people who weren't drug addicts or alcoholics in my entire time in Europe - me and a chaplain. They used to destroy civilian infrastructure so often the Army just ran a tab with them all of the time of reparations. Jimmy Carter's military. There was nothing that man couldn't f*ck up.

From what I have read, the military during the 80s was alot like this. General Tommy Franks wrote about it his memoir. When he arrived and took command it was a disorganized group who didnt even have radios to effectively move and coordinate in the field. He had to supply them with his own $.
US/NATO preparedness has always been severely overrated and often neglected.
My dad was a tanker mechanic in Germany in the 70s/80s, and HOLY SHIT this is the kinda shit that *almost* would happen. Almost every day was beer o-clock. Old M60s, and Leppard I are in many of his pictures. They didn't have any M1s during his time FYI where he was

First time I went in the Army was in the late 80's. Was in Germany for 3 years 3rd Armored Div / Hanau Germany. I never seen no crap like what was in this movie. Just some small stuff like drinking too much or the ones who came up hot on a piss test. This type of crap never would have happened. Funny movie though.
That's odd because my father was also stationed in Germany and he said 2 of his friends died there from heroin overdose also he said there was widespread use of the drug in Germany. He was stationed in 76' I believe so things could've changed
