That's a great video, and a great design. Thanks for posting. I improvised a boom in my shop, also. The ceiling is just too high to hang hoses and power cords from, so I took a 2X4X8' and made the boom from that. In addition to dust collection and power I have added a floodlamp at the end that I can aim, which really helps illuminate work, and a compressed air hose.
This is genius! I love an organized space! The J Bolt hinges blew my mind, and what an awesome way to repurpose the “maybe I’ll use this one day” wood. I have no doubt this will make your shop more efficient.
Farm gate hinges are great, normally you use one up and the other down so the animals can't lift the gate off. Your setup does not allow for that due to its hidden access, but I still recommend screwing a block on top that prevents accidental lifting of the boom off its gate hinges. A simple wooden block will do. Nothing worse when lifting something in the shop and you bang on the boom, and it lifts off crashing down on your work piece.
Thanks! I thought about mounting the top hinge upside down, but after using the arm, I feel confident that I wont accidentally lift it off. It's heavy enough with the hoses, etc that it takes some oomf to lift it up. But still a great suggestion.
As the video went on, I wondered if you were going to wind up losing suction with a length of hose that long. The shot of your Dust Deputy tipping over answered that question. 🤣
Nice work. My cyclone bucket also likes to tip over but I need it to be portable so a wall hook wouldn"t work. My solution was to fill another bucket with about 3 inches of screws and other small metal bits then put the cyclone bucket in. Just the right amount of ballast and still portable.
That’s a great solution! It probably would have stood better if I’d installed the wheels? But then now that I think about it, it would probably just walk/roll. I’ll keep your solution in mind. Thanks so much!
Nicley done..! I will never look at gate hinges the same way my horses do (thank you). I have task lighting all over my shop - I could see adding some form of light to the end of the boom for those times you need it (possiably removable).
Very nice arm build 👍👍👍 Hard to make out in the video, if the heavy duty hinges got like plastic inserts. if they do not, I think it would be good to get anti-gall paste for stainless. For that long lasting smooth swing 💯💯💯
Looks amazing. But I must say that RUclipsr "scrap wood" looks better than what I buy at stores. My scrap wood is just small cutoffs that I think I'll use someday but aren't really fit for anything, LOL.
That looks and works great! My only suggestion would be to screw something (even just a block of wood) into the mounting board just above the lower pivot to prevent it from lifting out. That way if the arm gets accidentally knocked, it won’t come crashing down.

@MakerGray if you add a "smart" power strip that sends power to dependent outlet when primary outlet draws power, you can skip the bluetooth button, it will turn dust collection on when the power tool is on, and stop it when the tool is stopped
I setup a train set for grandchildren in my dining room (rarely used). I shortened chain on chandelier so I don't hit my head anymore. (follow me for more ideas)
What is the obsession with these over-engineered, too-expensive dust collector arms. I solved the problem with a 4" PVC elbow. You loosely screw it to the ceiling over your workbench. The hose hangs nicely, pivots left and right, and is easily removable. Took me 10 minutes and cost $5 (at the time).
@semosancus5506 I think the obsession comes from the same place as those people who “know better”, but then watch videos from people who “don’t”, apparently so that they can somehow criticize them or tell them they’re wrong somehow. You know the type, right? The ones who knowingly click on a video with a thumbnail and/or title that clearly states what the video is about but then act shocked and appalled by the content? But it might not be. What do I know?
@@MakerGray Engineering is about solving a problem that works well enough to meet the needs. Such mentality is everywhere in the engineering world. Your arm, while beautiful and quite entertaining to make, is more than is required to solve the problem. As I noted, I solved it for $5 and 10 minutes. My "engineering" was better and I'd win if we were selling "our product". That having been said, not everything has to be about engineering. I frequently create things (even shop furniture) that I think are beautiful and sometimes I choose build methods that are overkill because I enjoy the process and it sparks joy.

This is EXACTLY what I'm looking to build for my shop, just a scaled up version. Love it!
Wahooo thanks Johnny! I'm so glad to hear it. I hope you do it!! Game changer for sure!

Great video. I'd run an air compressor hose up there as well.....and a beer tap.
Now you’re talkin 🍻
Not too often do you see a build like this meaning simple but brilliant, very nice build thanks for sharing.
Thank you Bill!

Thank you so much Brittany! 😄
Nice job! I like those hinges.
Thanks Ralph!

Brilliant!! I need a couple of these in my shop. Thanks for posting, Erin! 😊
Thanks so much Sarah! 😊 I hope you build them!!
What a great idea! This would be a great addition to any workshop!
Fantastic idea, and it looks cool too! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks so much!
Niceeee! This one is definitely happening in my workshop too (if I can call it that)… love the gate hinges idea!
Yay I hope you do it! It’s especially great in small shops!
Such a clever and elegant solution. Nicely done!
Thank you so much!
Great build! Great Video! Might I suggest adding an air hose along with the power cord.
That’s a really great idea. Thanks so much!
Your shop looks so similar to mine that I may just have to give this a go!
I hope you do! Highly recommend!
Best Boom on RUclips...Thanks for sharing...Great content...Oh and thanks for the code for the Guild...I'm in...
Wonderful! Thank you so much!
Awesome job Erin! 😃👍🏼👊🏼
Hey Fred! Thanks so much! 👊🏼
Well done!
Oh my! I'm not a woodworker but I love this JUST BECAUSE!
😄
You are a natural engineer. I just discovered you and love the video. I would add the candy dispenser!
Thank you so much! And welcome! 😄
Awesome build!
I'm so glad you think so! I looooove it
Amazing thumbnail! I clicked right on it. Great work on the video.
I love hearing that. Thanks so much!!

😆 yep definitely no issues there haha
Awesome!! Your solution would solve the same issue in my garage.
Feels so good to finally tackle this!
Brilliant project, thank you.
I got the WGOA deal too, really appreciated 😬👌🏻
Wonderful! Thank you so much 😄
This is so profesh!!!
Thanks Almita!
Awesome. Thanks for sharing. 👍🏻
Thanks for watching!
Great idea
Gotta agree, it's one of the best (if not the best) upgrades you can make to a small shop! But I don't need to tell you that. 😃
😄 Thank you so very much!
Nice work.

Nice! Hey - There's no shop project that can't be improved by a candy dispenser! M&M Peanut works for me! (that way you can use many other types, too)
I like the way you think!
Great solution!
Thanks so much Dave!
Love it!

Oh, interesting. No plastic inserts. It swings like a dream now, but I might go ahead and grab some of that paste! Thanks!

Something chocolate :)
Always! 🤣🤣🤣🤣👍👍👍👍

What kind of gymnastics are you doing in your workshop that would knock something like that out of its hinges?

Not necessary
Which Festool vaccum cleaner do you use? Are you happy about it ?
Festool Ct Midi 1. I love it! Heres a link for you: rivr.link/MRG-AolWgY

Curious how it’s over engineered. It’s so simple. And definitely not expensive. Besides the hinges, I built the whole thing from scraps.
