Went ahead and made some full build plans since a lot were asking. www.johnbuildsit.com/plans/p/miter-saw-wings-build-plans
Thanks for the support!!
Thank you.
You #John Builds it...are a rock star! You could totally sell those...#Bob Villa would be proud...just saying
The moulding attachment is a great idea!
🙌🏼🙌🏼
I feel like this system could be mass produced and would sell, It's really well thought out and would definitely be useful to so many people in the trade.
I would definitely buy it thats for sure. 👍
Couldn't agree more!! Amazing Idea and Execution!
I'm a retired chippy here in Australia even though we do not use crown moldings here that is a great setup.
That’s interesting, didn’t know that!
Dude! Brilliantly executed! I love the modification of the roller legs, and the way you made it compact for transport. 👌👌
I appreciate it! I’ve had some in the past that were just way too big and heavy haha really like this slim design with more features
Man, that what you you did there for your insane quality Miter saw was a piece of art of work. So clean, simple, elegant, modern, and more. Wow 👏🏼👏🏼
Thanks for watching! 👍🏽
Awesome build man. Nice cross between Spencer at insider carpentry and Ron Paulks design with the holes. I like the idea for attaching the roller stands for support. I just built myself a similar set last week, I went with 1/2" ply as this was mainly my prototype, to use on site for a a while.
Thanks man! Really liking them!
Also wanted to add I got my first initial design ideas from Spencer with Inside Carpentry. You both do a great job. Thanks, Brian
You should market this well-made product. Make it adaptable to the most popular mitre saws. Many would find this product VERY USEFUL! I would love to buy one!
This is basically what I needed to see. I like my mobile base for mobility and don't have a shop large enough for a dedicated permanent station.
This is amazing! One thing I’d add is a bubble level on each removable extension. Also to make them even more reliable as work/assembly table, you could add on the underside some glued cross beams and close the bottom to turn them into torsion boxes. It shouldn’t be a problem to move the legs and other jig holding features onto the bottom panel. The torsion box height could be less than the current side walls or you could make those walls taller such that the attached accessories on the underside can still technically be recessed and not get in the way of the dowel connection. This would add significant weight but would make them much more reliable!
There’s no way to level this saw stand itself. It doesn’t need to be level, just flat across. I’ve had beefier wings before but I like this leaner set here much more. I don’t need it to be a heavy duty workbench so this is perfect for what I’m wanting. Good ideas though!
@@JohnBuildsIt I don’t do onsite contractor work, but I can modify this for a new combined miter saw station and torsion box workbench I will build in my small shop at home. Thanks for the inspiration!
Love it. I will probably make something like this. I might try to modify the roller legs to be able to hinge for uneven ground.
THE best stand I've ever seen. Very clever and slick design. How much does it weight? 45 pounds or so?
Yea somewhere around there probably! Not too bad at all
Upgrade: built-in level bubble, routed groove to insert a lineman's string bubble. Put one on each side to help level the legs faster.
There’s no way to level this saw stand itself. Doesn’t have to be level, just flat
My dude!! This is AMAZING. Love all the features and little things about this mobile miter saw 😍. BEST one out there for sure. My shop (currently a bedroom in our small house) is too small to add a mobile miter saw BUT I definitely want to somehow incorporate one now lmao 🤣. Thanks for sharing
Would be great to set up outside and then just store inside if that’s something you’re able to do 👍🏽
Looks incredible! Only thing I might add is a bubble level embedded in the side of the wing near where the leg adjustment is so you can quickly set everything perfectly level.
There’s no way to level this saw stand itself. They don’t all need to be level, just flat all across
Problem with the bubble level is the ground your saw will rest upon. If IT’S not perfectly level, your bubble will be useless.
Or am I mistaken?
@@globyois depends... if the saw itself can't be leveled as John suggests with his stand, then you're right there'd be no point in leveling the wings. Ideally you'd be able to level the saw to the ground, then level the wings to match.
This is by far one of the coolest and most useful builds I have ever seen! Amazing!
Thanks John,
Hope you make some coin from your links. Got most of my stuff there and from the other guy with a similar thing.
I just made this for a dewalt 780. Minor changes. Trying to get that weight down. Built this mainly for the crown stop. This stand is awesome! Works great and I haven't cut crown on the flat in a while. I was never really able to adjust for ceiling height above cabinet doors before this jig. Now its like breathing...Framers gave me a ceiling one inch out of level again? Can't tell.
Beautiful and I can't wait to make one. One thing I would consider is adding some t-nuts and Allen set screws to be able to fine tune the lip where the extension wings are attached to the saw. Put two t-nuts on the underside of the wing above the angle iron and use the set screws to raise the wing from the top side with an Allen wrench until perfectly mated to the saw. Then secure the wing with the. knobs to hold it in place. You should only have to do this once, but if you end up switching from 3/4 ply to 5/8 for your wings you can easily adjust for the difference. This would also eliminate the need to trim one edge of the aluminum angle and you could even use steel angle.
This is an amazing build, I am a first time viewer and you 100% earned a Sub for this Gem!
Thank you!!
This is AWESOME! I have a similar mobile stand for my Miter Saw and have never liked the extension arms as there is always too much play in the leveling of the ends and more importantly with the "stop" feature on the ends. I have been wanting to come up with something like this since I got my stand and you covered all the bases! I especially like the compactness and how you added the storage details down to even having a magnet hold the knobs when stored away. I will definitely use the magnetic tape measure trick on some of my other jigs. I hate using the pun but "you hit the nail on the head" for me on this one!!!
Awesome man glad to hear!!
Could add one more thing 😁 Kizen Mitre Fence
Here an idea for your knob and bits.. Get a small pouch bag and pin it to the side or under the table.. Great for keeping things with a machine if you take them on job site
The magnets working great 👍🏽
Great execution. I've just started brain storming ideas for my own wings for my Ridgid MSV and now I have some really great ideas
Thanks for watching!
Nice build John! You may want to stay with the Ridgid miter saw stand. I sold a "fancy" Bosch stand to "upgrade" to the Ridgid stand. Larger wheels 👍 What I also needed is extension platform surfaces, not a material support "point" 😕 We both have this and I'm sure you will never go back. I did mine with no fastening to the mitersaw itself (no screws or knob) or stand, and no support leg, yet with my 5' or 8' wings and material on it, I have no deflection. I read some other praises below and I don't get the fascination with bubble level vials installed. It's all about being in plane with the saw 🤔 Great build!
Thanks man! Still using the Ridgid too
Outstanding. A few times during viewing I said "ok he's going a bit overboard" only to say "Ahhh yes that's nice, perfect, keep going".
Haha thank you!
Can you make me one !!! That’s pretty bad ass
Well done!!!!! I will be using your ideas here to make something for my DWS779
Very nice work - and I've got to say, 'well thought out'.
As a weekend wood warrior, I've been thinking of setting up a mitre saw station and this has me itching to copy it.
Yep definitely would be great for people to just set up and work out of their garage! Stores away easy and compact
Also, do you find the wings to be stable enough using the metal stands you modified? On insider carpentry that was one of his complaints about his first go of wings. They would move around a lot. Just curious what your experience is.
No they’ve been great on mine. It probably helps a lot with the extension arms on this Ridgid stand
Well thought out design and I think you use your mitre station very similarly to the way I do. I will be using this as a model for my festool kapex on possibly a dewalt stand. Great job …thanks
How have the saw attachments held up since this build video - still level and rigid? Also which inexpensive roller stands did you use? Do you find them too heavy? Thanks so much!
Attachment system is still great, no issues at all. I got the stands from Menards, but I’m sure they’re the same as the ones you can get pretty much anywhere. They all look the same
I’m loving this idea! I’m gonna get the Harbor freight Hercules stand seams to be very rugged I haven’t been happy ever with my dewalt stand so time for a switch
It is exactly what I needed! Don't have enough space for miter station. Thanks, John!
Perfect as usual!
Awesome, thanks for watching!!
Salut John, Magnifique réalisations, bonne continuation à plus JEAN.
Great vid. Its been a year+, any changes before I hit some of your links???
Thanks
I haven’t changed anything about it, loving it 👍🏽
Sweet setup! I always thought that using a pair of butt hinges would be a great method for the wing attachment. Securing 1 leaf to the base of the saw and the mating leaf to the wing itself. Insert pin to assemble and remove it to break it down..
Dang that does sound like a good idea!
Now i know you watched @insider Carpentry - Spencer Lewis build his your not going to credit him for all but the bench dog holes?
All respect to Spencer, he has a great channel.. but he didn’t invent miter wings haha. I built to suit my wants, and I’m seeing lots of differences between the two setups.
Bench dog holes have existed for over 100 years. What the hell are youbon about?
THIS is the solution I've been looking for! Bravo brother. Saved me a lot of money from not having to purchase the uber-expensive Best Fence Pro or build a complicated cabinet-based mobile miter saw station. Job site ready and mobile! I love this.
This is one of the best builds, description of the build, filming of the build and overall concept of the build that I’ve seen on RUclips in years. I instantly subscribed and trust me I rarely if ever subscribe. Kudos for your excellence and craftsmanship!!
I appreciate that thank you!!
@@JohnBuildsIt It’s rare that I encounter someone who actually view their profession as a carpenter as a highly skilled artisan!! You should be commended to your excellence and ability to communicate at such a high level!! I’m excited that I subbed ur channel and as a 58 year old carpenter who is very up and aware of the latest advances, tools and techniques, I’m anticipating enjoying ur content and learning from it as well!!! Keep up ur excellence brother!!
NICE!
CONSIDERING THE MILWAUKEE 7 1/4 CORDLESS MITER SAW. WOULD YOU KNOW IF THAT SAW IS CAPABLE OF CUTTING PREFINISHED KITCHEN CABINET CROWN MOLDING NESTED PERFECTLY WITH NO TOUCHUPS? HAVE OTHER SAWS. LOOKING FOR SOMETHING THAT IS LIGHT AND TIGHT JUST FOR THIS PURPOSE.
Great build! This is similar to what I want to do. Can you please tell me exactly how much the two wings weigh when nested together?
So you added the magnetic tape in the dado, and then put an adhesive backed steel tape measure in there? I can't find a steel tape measure that doesn't have an adhesive back....
Yep. Just leave the paper on it
Pretty innovative and smart. Nice work and thank you for posting.
Very nice setup
Thanks for the vid
I have this same saw but unfortunately I’m on my second one
There may be a flaw the blade brake from Milwaukee
Have you noticed anything weird with the brake not working
Others are also having this same issue
I haven’t yet. But yea some others have commented that
Could you using particleboard flooring for a cheaper option or would it sag?
I probably wouldn’t just for durability. And it’s a lot heavier
EXCELLENT! OUTSTANDING Idea. I’m already putting my plans together for my saws. 👍🏼
Thanks, John! I've been procrastinating building wings for my miter saw for some time. I've purchased your plans to give me the kick in the butt that I needed!
This is awesome! What about some sort of recessed bubble level for the wings to ensure they're level when on site?
Thought about it but there’s no way to level the miter stand itself, easily. It just all has to be flat and in line anyways, not level
@@JohnBuildsIt very true. Good point! Great videos though!
John excellent build and great idea. Thank you
Great wings John! I have a question about the stop. I currently use the Fastcap Best Fence system for my DeWalt stand. I haven't found a better stop system yet simply because the sacrificial wood on the stop goes all the way to the blade. You can set the stop to make repeatable cuts as close to the blade as you need. Most stops on the market are limited to the end of the wings (several inches away from the blade). My question is will the Fastcap stop fit in a standard T track or is it proprietary? I suppose I could probably modify it without much trouble. My plan is to build very similar wings to yours but rather than using the Kreg stop I would use the FastCap stop for their flat fence and mount the T track on top rather than the rear of the wing. Very nice details on everything!
I’m not sure I don’t have experience with the FastCap
I verified today for anyone that might be wondering, the fastcap stops for their flat fence system does indeed work in a standard T track. I plan on using the fastcap stop on a set of wings I am going to build using your video for inspiration.
You made me to subscribe the channel with this video~! :D
I appreciate it!!
I made one similar about 2 years ago and put out a video as well. I use the DWX726 rolling miter stand with a Dewalt Miter saw. On my saw end I just slip the extension wings over the T-bar on the stand, then lock down the knob underneath. Since I made mine I added the T-tracks for my crown stop too. I made my crown stop so you could still see the angle scale on the saw. I like your addition of the dog holes and the T-track along the back for the stop. If I ever make another set I will use your idea of making the main table out of maple. I used pre-finished 3/4 birch plywood but it has peeled up in one spot where I caught it with a tool. I also like the heavy earth magnets you used for keeping the legs up during transport. Great job and high quality video.
Thanks man! Yea I ended up drilling some holes around all the main saw degree detents so I could see them better. That’s the only thing I’ve changed so far, it’s been working out great
Extremely versatile, creative, and genius. Well done John.
Thanks man, really loving it!
Great design. Thoughtfully created and laid out.
Do you have a link to the rare earth magnets you used? TIA
I bought them locally at Menards sorry!
You do know when you buy a new chop saw or compound miter saw you have to true it up. Never I mean ever will it be a true 90° or 45°, for gods sake they were just kids that made it. Be nice
Yes.. isn’t that common sense? Lol
I like it🤘🏼
What kind of glue did you use to secure the threaded inserts?
Either epoxy or ca glue
perfect! I was trying to figure out how to make wings for my miter saw. stumbled on your site by chance. love it and you just got another subscriber.
Awesome! Thank you!
Thank you so much. I just purchased Ridgid miter saw and the stand came free with it and I was thinking about trying to make something like this for my stand. Thanks for the video…..perfect. I wish I could give it 5 thumbs up.
Awesome! Thank you!!
Very nice, clean and simple design! Love it!
Thanks for watching!
Really well done. Nice.
I dont understand how you can use the tape linked in the show notes because it is adhesive backed as is the magnetic tape, what am I missing?
It’s still a steel tape measure, just leave the paper on the back and it’ll still stick to the magnet 👍🏽
@@JohnBuildsIt thanks John, great video BTW
Took me a minute to find but this is perfect for my needs! Building this weekend and I know I'll love it
Awesome!
I picked up the Rousseau dust hood for my 12" slider. Game changer for keeping the shop clean. I too keep my saw on a mobile cart so for me it was a necessary expense even though it's expensive
Yea I need to pick one up too!
Super pimp love it
great build! love the no fence idea keeps the weight down and gives you a worksurface. I am now a new sub!
I appreciate it! 🤘🏼
Is there a reason you chose the rigid saw stand?
It’s not new. Got it with my Ridgid saw years ago
What are those legs you used on the wings?
Roller support stands
ummmm. Stunning. The worst part is that I have the same saw stand and would love a little extra "utility". So now I basically have to do this. It also just looks phenomenal.
Haha you’ll love it!
Very nice..... definitely love the mitre saw wings .... my 1st time tuning into your channel... definitely be keeping my eyes on looking for more videos from you ... thank you
I appreciate it man thank you!
This is perfect
This is absolutely amazing. Fantastic, practical build!
Thank you!
I’m making this very soon!
Do you have any revisions you would make if you were to do it again?
I haven’t changed anything yet. Loving it!
@@JohnBuildsIt do you think there’s a “maximum depth” that you would make it?
It seems like you used the rolling support stand as the width determination
@@ForrestColeman most guys make theirs wider than this, but I personally didn’t want any more weight to it. It’s already heavy enough at this size haha. It’s just personal preference though if you want more of a workbench space
Really nice build. There's a lot of guys on YT who have wings videos but none so detailed. Thank you. (Subbed)
Thank you I appreciate it!!
What is the Rockler tool you are using in the video at 6:44 into the video?
Dowel jig
thx
Nice. I think I'll make mine a little deeper so I can carry my tracks in there as well.
Good idea!
Building one and your video helped bring some insight! Thank you.
Awesome!!
I have the Dewalt flexvolt saw. There is only 1 threaded hole on the side of the saw. If I were to use the same method for attaching the mitersaw wings, do you have any recommendations on how I can secure the aluminum angle?
I’d probably drill and tap a second hole. I don’t see how it would affect the warranty if you still have one, but who knows! I’d have to have the saw and stare at it for a couple hours to come up with something else
Love this design, but please watch your hands around the table saw blade!
I’m very concerned for the safety of my own hands thanks!
This is the first video of yours I’ve watched.
Very enjoyable and efficient with your editing and videography.
Your skills are very natural and creative.
Looking forward to seeing more.
Thank you
I appreciate that thank you!!
Very nice John! Great ideas, presentation and explanation as usual. Have you had any issues with the legs not staying in the vertical position while in use? Or is there some type of stop to keep them in the upright position? Thanks for providing such great and useful content. Keep it coming.
No the wings are heavy enough, it’d take a pretty good kick to get the legs to move and fold out
Make a mobile table saw station!!! Using the dewalt table saw stand Please! :-)
I do need to actually! Haha
Wow, that’s chock full of good ideas (like the crown stop). I think this will eliminate my hesitation over committing shop space to a full-size miter station. Looks like an incredible deal for $5 plans!
Thank you!!
Where did you get the support legs?
Menards.
is that a Ridgid brand miter saw stand?
Yea 👍🏽
Nice build John. Great video, great design for making portable and easy to carry.
Thanks for sharing.👍👍👍
Thanks man I appreciate it!
absolutely awesome 100% I am now strongly considering doing exactly what you have done here. Amazing!
Awesome glad it helped!
Wow this was a great idea, not have a permanent space to set up this was ideal. thank you for this build.
Awesome glad it helped!
Nice 👍
GREAT WORK! Looks amazing and highly functional
Thanks I’m loving it!
Nice work . I will build me one tomorrow. Totally awesome. Much appreciated
Awesome man thanks for watching!
Great build and features. It would be cool if you could do another follow up after using it for a while to see how it's working and holding up to daily use. I would be a little nervous about the exposed t-track and stop getting banged around and damaged with daily use.
I still want it though!
So far so good. Haven’t come across anything id change or do different. Soo much better than my previous set ups
Exactly what I was looking for. Great Job!
Thanks for watching!
I like the trim stop, certainly a better method than using the saw bevel. My new saw looks a lot like yours, and it's accurate for the most part, but it's hard to see exactly where that cut will go when the unit is tilted.
Yea I’m just not a fan of beveling either haha. If I’m doing something besides crown and the piece is too wide to stand up and just cut with a miter, I’ll use my tracksaw. Feel like I get better results that way
I like the idea that you designed the wings to attach to the saw. If you change the stand, the wings still work no matter what. Nice work.
Thanks I appreciate it!
👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
You have a lot of really good ideas in your build. Just what I was looking for. Thanks.
Thanks for watching!
Seeing your work has made me realise I need to lift my game on the job site
All about efficiency!
