So it turns out that buying a CSL Elite was a good move. Not for my wife, who doesn't see me anymore because I'm too busy SIM RACING, am I right, boys?!?! But seriously, after a long hiatus sim racing has come back with a vengeance for me this year and a lot of it has to do with how much better it feels on the new kit. I want to share my thoughts and try to paint a picture for those of you who, like me, are a bit on your own and don't have any Fanatec buddies nearby who can give you a try of their setups. Please comment if you have your own opinion to share or if you have questions - I'll be glad to answer and glad you stopped by. Thanks!

I have a medical condition that causes me to fatigue pretty quickly if I have to exert myself. I’d like a wheel but I’m not sure if I could handle it. Obviously the fanatec would be too much, but how exhausting is the Logitech, and can you turn the force feedback down if it is too tiresome?

I went the same route 3 weeks ago (except I got the Elite Loadcell Pedals and a Formula Carbon Wheel) and 100% agree with you. The Force Feedback is completely different. I never understood when people said "more detailed FFB" until I first tried my CSL Elite. You get so much more information. A big plus on immersion but also a big plus on consistency.
The comparison I like to make is "My G29 was a TOY that got me into sim racing. The CSL Elite is SIM RACING EQUIPMENT." Sounds ridiculous but it's true.
One more thing: My girlfriend HATED the rumbling noise the G29 made. After my first session with the CSL she said "It was a very good idea to get the new wheel."
Maybe that's a good argument some of you can use;-)

'...The G29 is a TOY..' attitude is a bit silly, its a good wheel - just not nearly as good as belt or direct drive wheels for hardcore sim racers. And for the price it provides a lot of value to a lot of people, not everyone who has one is dedicated to finding the last tenth of speed, a lot of us play for fun. Keep in mind a lot of games race as well as other stuff, I have a zillion controllers for different things here and that sort of investment for the Fanatec costs more than a lot of peoples PC's.
That said If I decide to upgrade I would just go straight for direct drive, in for a penny in for a pound.

That said, you are 100% the G29 definitely doesn't replicate things like kerbs that well, but its still worth it - especially as a first buy so you can decide if you want to really serious up your sim gear.

After a few back and forth emails Fanatec was fairly certain of the problem but only had parts for the 2.5 wheelbase. With a minor cost on my end, they quickly fixed it and had it back to me (USA) fairly quickly. I think I spent less than $100 between shipping and repair costs.

Well done Danny, you hit the nail on the head. I did a similar upgrade from Fanatec CSR to Fanatec Clubsport V2 and concur with all your findings. That was the good news, the bad news is that the upgrade from Clubsport or CSL to OSW direct drive is just as big. Its not about the power my 20nm wheel is usually run at 65%, it's the immediacy, the purity of the feedback, the granular nature of the road feel and more importantly the tyre slip feel. You are hanging on to the rotor arm of the motor and just losing the belt and its connection points makes another big leap. The sensory feedback is so great that it was exhausting, your brain had to learn to deal with it.

I hope sharing my experience will add to this video. I don't want to contradict what Danny said, but just say that it can go differently for different people. It has probably to do with my lack of experience since I have been treating sim racing just like playing any other vidogame for several years and only recently became more serious about it.
I upgraded from the old Logitech Driving Force GT to the most basic Fanatec CSL kit a month ago. Like I said, my experience was a bit different. I have to agree, the force feedback immediately felt like I could achieve much more now, it just needed some getting used to. So in this regard I was immediately optimistic, but not already convinced, since I still couldn't perform as well as before.
It was the small things I discovered, that I haven't felt on my Driving Force GT, which made me enjoy it. For Example, I've never felt a flatspot on the tires and could now even tell on which wheel it was. Also loosing the rear seemed to become less and less of an issue.
Just be prepared that it can be more of a slow process than you might expect after seeing this video.
What took me even more time, was getting used to the pedals. Keep in mind I'm now using the basic CSL pedals without loadcell (these are going to be upgraded soon). This break pedal uses a kind of rubbery foam that you have to compress in order to create resistance. My Driving Force GT used a simple spring mechanism that didn't create any kind of noticable resistance. This created a real issue for me. I was signed up for races that go over a length of 90 minutes (+training & Qualifying) and I seriously doubted that my foot would last this long.
After one week of training I managed it barely. I couldn't even think about doing clean trail breaking, or having a real good feel in more complex corners, though.
Now it has been a month and the next race is comming. I finally feel like I have reached the level of performance I had before, but for now I'm thinking it kind of threw me back a month and I'm still "waiting" for the payoff.
That being said, it's of course more fun to drive, even if it was a little frustrating in the beginning. Also, just for fairness... I could have a distorted view on this, since it was a slow process for me and consistency is hard to measure, if you're not setting out to do that. I guess it has already improved a bit.

Thanks for your honesty. I could see how the decision to upgrade can lead to a bottomless money pit while in search of the holy grail of sim racing gear. Even after spending 3 times as much getting the CSL you then feel you have to spend even more to upgrade with a LC kit or new wheel while telling yourself you'll be more consistent soon. Had a csl elite for 2 years never been disappointed yet by how good it feels when you get the settings dialled in properly. Every bump every kerb road texture wheel slip the list can go on. Every car feels different never had that on a logitech 😂 recently purchased the BMW gt2 wheel its been a superb fanatec wheel upgrade. Thinking of upgrading to a podium DD have tried DD before it's just the amount to spend on the upgrade could buy 2 csl elites n 2 gt2 wheels. this is an old video but I thought I should add my 2 cents as someone who started on a csl elite and made the minor switch to the csw. first off i switched because of lack of support for some of the new wheels and hubs etc. fanatec were putting out, and i felt behind. i could never find information for certain things about the csl that i could vary quickly find for the csw and id end up messing with the wrong settings and was never confident in what i was feeling from the wheel, when I switched to the csw all the already set settings felt perfect (other then the drift mode being set to -5 i like to keep it around -2 because at -5 the wheel felt super slow to self steer during a slide in iracing or when i was just messing around and drifting in forza), the wheel felt like it had less clipping and i felt that it was way more smooth and detailed in what i was feeling, i still feel i should of saved a little more and went to a dd1 since i already had a pretty similar wheel base, but im still super happy with the csw and if you can spare the extra cash i think its well worth the extra cost over the csl. also if youre playing at a desk i would not get the cheapest pedals fanatec has to offer, they arent the greatest feeling and the break pedal is so ungodly stiff that if youre using it on anything there then bolted to a rig it will flip every time you try and really get on the breaks, and it being so stiff and such a short throw, made it so it was very hard to be consistent with my breaking, like if you cant afford the clubsport pedals id almost be tempted to tell you to stick with the Logitech ones till you can. and ill add to the customer service as i unfortunately had to use them. they are polite but take quite a bit to respond, i had an issue where the h pattern on my shifter wouldn't work but the sequential would, i sent it back and they fixed it in about 2 weeks and refunded my shipping cost when i showed them my receipt. they did help me with all my questions on setting everything up (because it was my first time and i skipped a lot of stuff in the instruction manual and thought things were broke when really i just had my pedals plugged into the pc and wheel base at the same time 🤦‍♂️)

Hello sir, please allow me a briefing of my situation:
I'm a 41 yrs. old dude from Hungary, I got into simracing approx. 2 yrs. ago on a PS4 controller. I'm playing the real "semi" simulator GT Sport (yeah, I know, semi-arcade also...) and I'm part of a great community with organised events on a regular basis. I reached my limits really fast on the controller and was thinking of buying a wheel for months. Unfortunately I've lost my great job of 10 years in 2019 so it was a heavy financial decision. When I was talking about this with my missus, she asked if we really need this, on which I answered WE don't, but I do, for sure. So November 2019 the G29 came. My fellow gamers were shocked as I stepped forward instantly and not saying I am the best yet undiscovered racing talent but I've learned and improved a lot during this time, especially as I've got some serious support from the fastest dude in the group, we've been practicing together a lot.
Currently I'm somewhere around the top of the midfield amongst our drivers. With bleeding nose I'm capable of running around TOP5 position if I don't bin it but it takes also a bit of luck to finish at those position(s).
Watching your video was a great confirmation if I want to take the next step in upgrade. I'd like to ask you about the pedals, tho: is it a standard version or the one with the load cell kit? Would you know the difference between them? Is it worth to spend the extra 140 EUR on the LC? Is the standard pedal set without LC also good for a "game change"?
    Thanks in advance!
    Andy

    • @johng1968
      @johng1968 3 года назад +1

Fort GT Sport it would not be a super upgrade, the standard pedal with the foam "thingy" would be more harsh/resistent than your average car pedal (you would need to fix your pedals, otherwise they will be sliding away even without LC). So if you got the money and plans for future (IRacing, AMS2, Assetto Corsa, RFactor etc.) then go for it. But you can always add it later on.
So for limited budget and only plans for GT Sport for now, go with standard pedals, you will be pleasently surprised.

I do appreciate this video greatly, im looking for a upgrade from my G29 myself. But one word of advice for people is to hard mount your wheel. Or just remove as much slop as possible from your setup in general. After I bit the bullet and drilled holes through my desk I gained time from getting just a bit more feedback, that was otherwise wasted in a sloppy desk mount, through to my finger tips from the G29. Also I replaced the caster wheels on my desk chair for some solid ones and that made a huge difference for braking, cause i don't slide back anymore. And they were only like $15 from Amazon.

Bell Stem Castors are what you're referring to and they're so helpful, I use them now, too: amzn.to/334iVjN - The things you listed are some of the best simple things you can do to maximise the G29 if upgrading is not really an option, especially as a lot of G29 people still use desks, like I did and still do now with the CSL. I fell short of drilling holes in the desk, though.

Just a heads up, the CSW V2.5 (the current clubsport base) actually has one motor, in fact it is the same motor and power supply as the CSLE! Which means the only difference in terms of power output and feeling are due to differences in the gear ratio and the toothed belt as opposed to smooth ribbed belts. They both have the exact same power at the motor level. It is the original CSW V1 and V1.5 that have the dual motors, but they are old brushed motors much weaker than the Brushless motor in the CSLE and CSW V2

I just did this upgrade (based on this video) and can confirm that everything in this video is true. It's absolutely worth upgrading - it's not cheap but it is actually very good value for money. If I was on a tight budget I'd consider buying the pedals first, then the wheel base (and pick your style of wheel, F1/GT), then the LC brake pedal. I would say the LC brake pedal is the biggest upgrade for improving, but the enjoyment and fun from the wheel is through the roof.

When I upgraded from the g25 to the csl elite it was like night and day. The steering felt like there was wheels attached to it... I could feel the rubber resisting the turn. The g25 is so grainy in its force feedback that its like watching 480p and the CSL is 1080p the Podium is 4k.
This is literally the definition of game changing.

if you are upgrading to something better, I would suggest waiting for fanatec's new csl Direct Drive wheel to come out. I believe its coming out very soon and is a major upgrade from the CSL elite

Would love this upgrade but the big under desk attachment of the Fanatec, that messes with the keyboard slider, just turns me off. One of the great things about the G29 is how you can slide it along the desk top and snug it from above.

The CSL Elite is a great base. I bought mine back in March and love it. I tried the desk solution, but opted to go to a dedicated cockpit fairly soon as it made better sense for me.

Definitely true. Sound so stupid if use the Fanatec wheel with a table. Got to use an actual cockpit. Using a realistic wheel needs a realistic condition. Better use 3 monitors too instead of only one.

3 weeks ago I moved from a T150 to the Fanatec CSL Elite. I did not enjoy it one bit for first 2 weeks: I thought the wheel was faulty. So much jerkiness, on circuits I could drive smoothly with the T150 it was now a fight with the wheel. Until I discovered this is force feedback :-). Gotten used to it now and love it. Indeed, you do sense sooner if the car is about to get out of control with this wheel.

Awesome! If you're on PC watch there ain't any old thrustmaster drivers that might be interfering as I know of someone who had iffy outputs because of old drivers from Logitech! Thanks for letting us know how you're getting on and watching

@@dannyleeracing I'm on PS4 but also plan to use on my PC (I bought a 10m HDMI cable). The transition from T150 to CSL Elite was difficult though :-). The T150 felt easier and smoother, just because I wasn't used to much FFB. I seriously thought the wheel was faulty. Spent a whole week adjusting the tuning, trying different drivers and then I took a rest for a week. Now that I've learnt to cope with the FFB (your wheel "slipping" are actually your tyres slipping), really enjoying the wheel. Spent most of this week doing daily race on Nordschleife on GT Sport. Was never able to do a decent lap without crashing, but thanks to the wheel and being able feel when the car is at it's limit I'm doing much better times. Gonna try ACC on the PC now that I can use the big screen and won't have to move the PC every time.

@@Bolkiebasher I totally understand how it initially feels like it's actually more difficult, whereas before you could almost breeze over kerbs and bumps without feeling it, now it's actually fighting you, but as you've found it doesn't take long for your brain to really get acclimatised and the feeling through the wheel becomes so second nature. If you're using ACC I have recently posted a video about my FFB settings as I've long struggled to get a sweet spot for force feedback with that game, but no longer - if you feel it's vague, give my settings a try but don't give up if they're not right for you.

    Pedals... pedals... pedals...
Guys fancy wheels are great if you’ve got free cash, but if it’s a choice of wheel or pedals - go pedals all the way! You don’t need the whole lot.
Lots and lots of the esports guys in ACC for example still have G29’s but such a cracking set of pedals.
    So yes, to summarize...
Get a decent set of pedals!

@@dannyleeracing First impression: OH. MY. GOD. You were not kidding. It's so smooth and powerful!
The difference is night and day, like you said the G29 feels like a toy compared to the CSL. The deadzone is gone, the notchiness is gone. There's so much more detail, I love it!
The loadcell brake did take some getting used to, but just like the wheel it's a massive step up from the G29.
There's such a great level of adjustment to all of this gear, from moving the pedals left and right, the stiffness of both the loadcell brake and the shifter, the settings in the Fanalab software, settings in the games/sims, etc. I'm still in the process of dialling everything in, probably will for a little while longer until it all clicks into place. Thankfully the defaults feel pretty good, and Fanalab has recommended settings for most games/sims which you can have loaded automatically upon starting them. Very handy.
Merry Christmas to you as well, and thank you!

The most important thing for me is the quality of data transfer of whatever goes on the track to the wheel, so I can be precise on my driving... I do not know why people go for tons of tork, get tired unnecessarily on the arms. Its not like you are getting paid thousands of bucks winning.. thus, real racing car wheel won't be that stiff.

  • @kevykevTPA

I just ordered this base and the McLaren GT3 V2 wheel. I need that specific wheel because it comes with 2 sets of paddles on the back, one for shifting and the other can be configured in multiple ways, but... I'm disabled, and my legs don't work, so I'll be using it as a throttle and brake. I have a POS wheel that has that feature, but otherwise makes the Logitech look like it's a real car- it doesn't even HAVE a base, you have to hold it in mid air like you do when driving a racing game on a phone or tablet, the brake axis is super flaky so sometimes I get what I ask for, and sometimes I get maybe 10-15% of what I asked for, which has caused a lot of wrecks. I had no idea why I sucked so bad until I recalibrated it and saw how flaky it was! So this is going to be not just a super upgrade, but a supercalifragilisticexpialidocious update for me!! It's not getting here until Tuesday (as I type this, it's Saturday, 5/20/23) and I am like a child waiting on Christmas!!
I'll do a video as well, especially targeting other gimps (I am one, so I'm allowed to use that word!), because until I found it (and got it at a fantastic price... The base and wheel for less than the Logitech!), I thought this piece of junk I have now was my only option, so hopefully I'll be able to help some others in my shoes (or, wheelchair) who are dealing with the same issue.
Thanks so much for the video, I love the look of your wheel, but it doesn't have the extra axis, so it's a no-go for me!
