Thus #7 of Manchester united has high expectations on their shoulders. Eric Cantona is still called "King Eric" at Manchester United. At UNITED, he is a Legend.
He certainly wasn't worlds best or Man Utds, he was the jigsaw piece that was needed at the time. Without him Utd were still a very good team. The no 7 comes from Bryan Robson. But for me I think he was an excellent domestic player but the benchmark is Europe and he just had too many nights he didn't cut it.
Why do people mention the number 7+not mention Robson? that's who I associate it with watched the 3-0 against Barca with Maradona in the team in 84, 1 hell of a player Robbo has a good game scores 2-gets mobbed at the end the fans lift him on their shoulders walks kissing him can't get off the pitch when he does walks straight up the tunnel mic straight in his face"how about that Bryan" "I not bad" he's knackered I noticed Giggsy got 1 for that FA cup goal in last ever replay against Arsenal he gets a mobbing kissing him on cheeks he can't get off the pitch bless him, reminds me of the cricket in the 70's early 80's when team scored winning runs it was stumps up quick+leg it off the pitch before they get mobbed remember first seeing it it was mental legging it off the pitch with the stumps-don't drop the bails you didn't have time (ha-ha made me chuckle thinnnking of them)

Also a point is that when Cantona came in there were the young boys who also joined first team, the class of 1992, and seems the arrival of Cantona changed the fortunes. Even Beckham and CR7 both wore #7 and both are iconic to Manchester united, but Eric Cantona had a different flair, he was sort of a guy who would make his own rules.

I don’t think it’s fair to judge Cantona on not winning international trophies. There are way more factors at play impacting that. The French team and it’s organisation were just not in a state to win until the 98 WC. Also, his mentality was one of the things that made him one of the greatest ever. He approached football like art.
Once I (french) met Cantona in a bar in Brest (France). I was with a colleague that was Scottish, she was quite a fan of football! It was a weekday, on a winter day, there was almost no one partying. With my colleague (she was there just for two days) we got shit drunk and we started bar/club hoping. We got into a club at like 1am, and inside there was only like 10 people! I remember my colleague getting all crazy and she was like "OMG, OMG I can't believe it's Eric Cantona..." but with her bad Scottish accent I didn't understood, I was like at her like "What the heck are you saying? err... contaneur??". Anyway, I was also shit drunk and wasn't seeing properly. Didn't recognised who he was so I though they were just casual people at the club drinking. I cheered with them, chitchated a bit, I remember asking "Cantona" stupid casual drunk question like "what's up dude, what you doing in Brest! Working at the harbour?". Then my Scottish friend was insisting that I took a picture of her and the guy and I was like "why do you want a picture with a random dude?". Anyway, I took the picture. The rest of the night is blurry (I didn't had sex with her tho). But the morning after she sent me the picture I took of her with Eric Cantona! And there I recognise him! So, yeah, that's the only famous person I've ever met and that's how it went! And I'm 36, I was a fan of him in my childhood/teen, I mean, he's a fucking legend in France too. Since I'm a teen I also love ManU and it's mostly because of him (and Giggs for no reason that I can remember).

Man his standards are so high that he got the best of coaches trainers and all of the club. Sometimes standards are raised hard to come by from a players standpoint
I love these videos, they are really well made; and the scoring system seems to be very reasonable which is amazing considering how many opinions there are in football. I already subscribed a few weeks ago :) Good luck!
@@DailyDoseOfFootballYT It's because you cover players with huge fanbases who have great emotion and sentimentality over them. I wouldn't be surprised if your Ronaldinho rating got a lot of flack for this reason (even though unfortunately for him he couldn't quite do as much as the Big Two in terms of stats/consistency etc. so personally I think it's pretty fair but it shouldn't take away from his absolute Legendary Icon status). Even though I really like the scoring system because it really gave a picture of how the players fair, it might be in your best interest viewership-wise to remove it. Another note to consider is that in the past due to not as advanced technology/racism/etc it was probably much more difficult for old legends to acquire a trophy cabinet like today so on that note I would be more lenient towards them e.g. Pele (there's a lot of differences in terms of ability from back then to today as well because of sports research as well; George Best would never achieve his status in today's game with his drinking habits for instance). Teams back then were much more localized in terms of player nationality. Just wanted to point that out. I can't wait for the older players (e.g. Beckenbauer, Pele) review because I wasn't there to see them so they're quite unknown to me.
@@EL_ClD Yeah I've thought about removing it a lot actually. Once I hit 1000 subs I cant post polls and I'll ask what people think there. I take the time into account a bit, or at least try to. I've done Puskas and Cruyff, don't know if you've seen those but might be cool

Near enough every match going Red of his time will tell you that Eric Cantona is one of the greatest ever to wear the Famous shirt of Manchester United, if you are not a United supporter it really will be hard to grasp what Cantona actually did,His enormous legacy is sealed in the history of the club.
@@juniorvandecwesthuizen5814 Ronaldo came at a time when United were already winning leagues Cantona came when it was 26 years since we last won the league so different circumstances but both obviously United legends.
7/10 is not very generous (or realistic in my opinion) but Eric is unlikely to care about that. He was a man who had enormous impact in the football world and that's how you measure the contribution of players. He had more impact than many high profile players who are probably rated better than him in football - again he would not care about that. The reason he would not care is that although he was a brilliant player, he did not need football or recognition from it. Of course he enjoyed it, but he didn't need it. Football needed him though just like it needs Pele, Maradona, Cruyff etc to feed the hype machine that is generally quite badly under-fuelled. There are not many premier league players who have matched up to Eric's quality during or after his playing days and the premier league is supposed to be "the best league in the world" so again, 7/10 seems an underestimation of his talent. So, he doesn't care but I do, it has to be at least a 9/10 for me. He was a curious mixture of grace and power and excitement for the game with an eye for goal better than most and he inspired all those around him, not many can do that. What I don't care about is the suggested flaw in his character - there was no flaw, he just didn't accept any nonsense from anyone and he should be universally respected for that, not criticised. Yes, he could have done more in the game if he had wanted to, but he didn't want to because it wasn't everything to him especially when asked to compromise his own principles. Some people have greater and wider interests and values than just football - he did football until he got bored of it I think. If the football world was a better place he may well have stayed longer and achieved more in that time.
Dude the guy deserved at least 85/100 you cant just put scores to stats, there are players like Khedira who won champions league and world cup and that way would look like they were better than Cantona
@@DailyDoseOfFootballYT I didn’t say that, but Cantona deserves a lot more than what he got. Numbers are estimates of what the real impact is, his impact on Man Utd and the world of football in general is massive. Definitely an all time great
@@Abood99222 I agree. It's also not reasonable to judge a player who performed consistently when he was on the pitch as having a 4/10 mentality. Pogba has more international success with a WC medal but ask Utd fans which player they feel has the more suspect mentality and they'd likely say Pogba (or they're 🤪). Cantona wasn't as willing to put up with shit from fans & referees as the typical players of his era. Now player power is more evident, as UEFA found out recently. And is there a more iconic player of the Premier league era? I appreciate all of this is quite subjective but he deserves a higher mark, even accepting his personal issues lost him a trophy or 2.
9/10 icon rating?? He's perhaps the greatest footballing icon in the history of English football. Or Beckham, but as a footballing icon it's not close. The 12 days of Christmas is sung by his fans with every thing in it "Cantona". He was a footballer on TV ads in the USA in the 1990s, which was a rarity. There's a motion picture about him. For Christ sake Oasis has a video homage him, long after he retired. The greatest ever manager rates him as his most iconic player. He speaks in countercultural, poetic flourishes. He's known simply as the King. He couldn't even bring himself to wear his kit in a non-iconic manner. He made English fans wave French flags. He made even opposing fans gasp with awe and admiration. Good video here, but go back now and rate him a 10 please. P.S. your trophy score here is way too low for him as well. He pulled a team from mediocrity to dynastic status which, again, the greatest ever manager credits him for. And no, I'm not a ManU supporter.
7 Trophies with three Clubs in two different league should at least warrant him 5 points. And Zlatan Ibrahimovic is still playing brilliantly for AC Milan and so far leads the table in a top flight league like Serie A. So, it's only fair you re-evaluate his ranking after he retires. Thanks for the series
He is the reason, so many around the world became United fans, including yours truly. Just like George Best before him, he played the game his own way and was often light years ahead of everyone else. As much as he achieved, his talent deserved so much more. Regardless, every United fan owes it to themselves. To look back at what this great man did for us and what he means to the club.
Cantona was the Michael Jordan of the EPL in the 90s. He was the best player in the league and he knew it. His game was not just about goals. He fed a lot of assists to his teammates. Most important of all, when he played, he made all his teammates play even better. Its no coincidence that he won 4 titles in 5 years. Would have been 5 for 5 if not for the Kung Fu kick !
It seems pretty crazy to think that in WC France 98 the French team played Christophe Dugarry up front and Cantona was not in the squad even, but then Dugarry was Zidane's best friend. Same with David Ginola, they were both sensational in England at the time. EDIT : I forgot that Eric retired from football in 1997 which is truly absurd for a man of his talent to retire at 30.

He was the player that the famous class of 92 (Beckham, Nevilles, Giggs, Butt, Scholes) would all look at awe and fear, They would be scared to give a wrong pass as just a stare from him, they would know that the pass was not as per how he wanted, thus in a way Cantona was a person then future stars would look at and try to emulate, at least in the perfection of playing, His influence at Manchester united is still there. The #7 is coveted with any player wearing that expected to play as good as Cantona. After him the famous shirt was worn by David Beckham then Cristiano Ronaldo.
Why do people mention the number 7+not mention Robson? that's who I associate it with watched the 3-0 against Barca with Maradona in the team in 84, 1 hell of a player Robbo has a good game scores 2-gets mobbed at the end the fans lift him on their shoulders walks kissing him can't get off the pitch when he does walks straight up the tunnel mic straight in his face"how about that Bryan" "I not bad" he's knackered I noticed Giggsy got 1 for that FA cup goal in last ever replay against Arsenal he gets a mobbing kissing him on cheeks he can't get off the pitch bless him, reminds me of the cricket in the 70's early 80's when team scored winning runs it was stumps up quick+leg it off the pitch before they get mobbed remember first seeing it it was mental legging it off the pitch with the stumps-don't drop the bails you didn't have time (ha-ha made me chuckle thinnnking of them)
@@craigoliver8712 In Manchester united, #7 has been iconic, of course Bryan Robson is one of the great for Manchester united, before Cantona came, Manchester united had not won the title for long time, and he made an impact almost immediately.
@@NightShooter87 there was a drinking culture before Fergie came+cut it out made it start of real professionalism probably in the game(not saying not proffesinol-but different times) before diet, sports physiology) don't know if same at most clubs, just generational thing was on about Robbo no:7 I used to make sure got no:7 for teams played in as kids? Young lads just 1 to 11 then just seemed to notice the 7 more on Robson ten anny other seemed to stand out more
@@NightShooter87 I mean he only played in 1 team that had a chance to win the UCL due to English ban and foreign player rule which was the 97 united team and even that one is considered the worst United team to win the PL. Cannot blame Uniteds lack of success in Europe on him. Cantona came 3rd in the BD so yeah he was certainly one of the worlds best in the period -92-97
10/10 positioning, he played more of a number 10 role than a number 9 which is why he wasn't so prolific
This is by far the best comment I've ever gotten what a story! Incredible really wow
King Eric ❤️ thank you for the wonderful video!
Definitely a legend. Every old school United great/legend talks about meeting Cantona for the first time, and how they felt seeing CANTONA celebrate their goals.
He was amazing, I'm glad you enjoyed. Consider checking out the rest of the channel btw
There is a reason why until now mancunian still refer him as King..he single handedly globalize not just man utd, but premier league as well..
*_Eric of House Cantona. First of His Name, the Red, the Legend, the True Owner of Number Seven Jersey, King of the Football Field, Protector of Manchester United, Father of the Red Devils._*
👑👑👑👑👑👑👑👑👑👑👑👑👑👑👑
Now you know His Majesty, the King’s full title.
Eric Cantona is my favourite Manchester United player of all time. Having said that, I do agree with your assessment. He was brilliant, albeit volatile. How Fergie managed to get the best out of Eric, is one of his greatest achievements.
Majestic. The King. The inspiration. George Best and Eric Cantona are my favourite ever players.
Eric is a mystical creature.
He truly was incredible.
won four Premier League titles in five years and two League and FA Cup Doubles. He won the league championship in seven of his last eight full seasons as a professional.....
Major enough trophys won for me
THIS is lady and gentlemen true Influencer. Legend. It blows my mind knowing he was founding stone of MU.
Only the sharp eyes of SAF and the cheeky and tactical skills of Cantona makes him the darling of his making
Unquestionably brilliant! Doesnt need asking because if you know then you know
Main reason why I LOVE MAN UNITED!!
Long answer: the G.O.A.T
Short answer: the G.O.A.T
Legend King Eric. The Reason I played football. For myself an absolute machine in every way. A true leader. Man Utd and even the Premier League wouldn't be the same today without Eric Cantona. And also part of the most legendary Nike commercials. Icon 10/10!!!

It's amazing that even in a grainy 90s clip that's barely a second long you can still recognize Valderrama instantly XD. I had no idea he played with King Eric in France!!!
PS: I don't know if he's good enough to fit your criteria, but you should do a vid on El Pibe
WOW. He actually was much better than i thought.
Great Video. Thank you.
A huge congrats for the efforts you have done to make this video,I am sure this will not go unnoticed. A big fan and well-wisher of yours, hope you get 1 M subs soon bro
Thanks man, I don't know tho, this last week as been really tough
You'll always have my support bro
Thank you for making these videos.
Nice vid hard work will pay off eventually mate
I hope so but I've been thinking of quiting, out of nowhere RUclips went crazy and now I get like half the views, it's like months of work just deleted

Your comments and ranking is fair. I'm really like it.
For me, Cantona is the First World Class Player in Sir Alex Ferguson's era. He's built structure for Man United Legacy. We own him. That's why he is The King.
His personality is what made Manchester united the champions and it is what the team had in all those years when they were the best in England
agreed, it was incredibly strong, not flawed like some suggest. Maybe they still wouldn't have won any recent titles if he had not played there....
Seriously great in depth channel
Eric Cantona has a temper that shows he has character and fortitude and shows why he is a number 7
Simply the best and yes he is the king
Man his standards are so high that he got the best of coaches trainers and all of the club. Sometimes standards are raised hard to come by from a players standpoint
I love these videos, they are really well made; and the scoring system seems to be very reasonable which is amazing considering how many opinions there are in football. I already subscribed a few weeks ago :) Good luck!
thanks man, people seem to always give me shit for the scores but I really do try to be unbiased as much as possible

I'm a Chelsea fan but this man was mental, a true equal to Bergkamp.Question for Utd fans or fans who was better Rooney or Cantona?
Cantona by a country mile for me. Many United fans would disagree but mostly younger ones.
2:50 😯 I've lost count of transfers suspensions bust ups, winning league with Marseille as top goalscorer then sold to some nobody team, wtf??? Gerard houlier convinced him to go to England after he had retired, age about 5. Won league with Leeds, there last.
Then sold to their biggest rivals 🙄 who where 8th at christmas and won the league...
Fifa career mode
i named my son Eric and cant be more proud
He was getting better as he got older
Great video! Absolute legend
King Eric
He had as much influence on the club as greats like,Edwards,Law,Best,Charlton,Robson,Keane,Scholes,Rooney,He his a God like figure to United fans who along with Sir Alex changed the whole mentality and ethos of the club at that time you really need to be a United fan to appreciate the seismic influence he actually had.
This video does not take into account the times Eric turned what looked like being a draw or a defeat into a victory and also how he elevated the players around him up to a higher level.
Near enough every match going Red of his time will tell you that Eric Cantona is one of the greatest ever to wear the Famous shirt of Manchester United, if you are not a United supporter it really will be hard to grasp what Cantona actually did,His enormous legacy is sealed in the history of the club.
Bigger than cr7 that's a question
@@juniorvandecwesthuizen5814
Ronaldo came at a time when United were already winning leagues Cantona came when it was 26 years since we last won the league so different circumstances but both obviously United legends.
Glad sir alex was the one managing him and not pep guardiola..would have fun to see him under jose murihinio too.
He is the KING of all ManUtd fans
10/10 positioning and 10/10 icon
Love your videos!
Georgie after the king Fu kick..."Eric, you can't go around doing that sort of thing"
Fergie
Ability wise he’s top 10 players of all time
Fair enough. Though his influence on the class of 92 was immense too.
He was like Lewandowski and Benzema in one , and better
He decided to retire at 25! I love Cantonna. No more crap! And how about calling each member of the committee "idiots" on their faces ? A true legend.
I was named after Eric cantona
He gave the fans what they craved, they crowned him king.
any kid who had their collars up playing football in the playground knew the score.
Eric Cantona... Great mountains always carry ice on their top.
The King of Manchester.
Awesome video, keep up the good job
Thanks, will do!
Great video man!
Appreciate it!
I'm pretty sure the crystal Palace fan was saying something about his mum who had just died
Great research, love these videos. Can you cover Iniesta?
I was at the Charity Shield match when he scored the hattrick for Leeds against Liverpool in 1992.
Love it! thanks a lot !!
Ofc!
Dude the guy deserved at least 85/100 you cant just put scores to stats, there are players like Khedira who won champions league and world cup and that way would look like they were better than Cantona
one main stat that needs to be considered is that most of the trophies he won were with underdog teams
its not like i only took trophies into account
@GLW perfect comment; sums it all up.
Icon factor should have been 10/10. They don’t get much more iconic.
Long live the king
7 Trophies with three Clubs in two different league should at least warrant him 5 points. And Zlatan Ibrahimovic is still playing brilliantly for AC Milan and so far leads the table in a top flight league like Serie A. So, it's only fair you re-evaluate his ranking after he retires. Thanks for the series
Song in the background? Also great video!

God I love this account
Ooh ahh cantona!
Please do Roy Keane. I love your videos! 👏
Icon factor:11/10
If France qualified to USA 94, imagine Cantona playing against Romario, Baggio, etc.
Chill, he was past his prime and two years retired from football.
