Back out of alert 3 chasing fat early Spring snaps and carrots in the little FC lucky charm

  • With a couple of weeks land locked in alert level 3 I was really looking forward to getting back out on the little FC. Last time I had missed out on my late Autumn fishing I love to do due to covid, coming into Spring and another little lock down I was hoping I wouldn't miss my early Spring fishing as well. Coming out of level 3 just in time, Stevo was back up in Auck's so we decided for an early Spring Snapper and Carrot sesh. We set off just before daybreak and launched with the sun already out of bed. The good news was, it was going to be a nice late morning with 2-4knts predicted. I had a couple big 5 kilo salty dog berleys on board for a good bait and berley bash and we headed off to one of my favorite spots. We anchored up in around 5mtrs and set the salty dog to do it's job.
    It takes a little while for the berley to kick in but with good current flow it didn't take long for my first gurnard to make it's way to the bin. I was hoping that was a good sign until our excitement was squashed a little as we started pulling in a few little sharks - then the Kahawai turned up, although we were catching fish it wasn't the target species. Over the next hour or two we managed a gurnard or two between the unwanted, there were no Spring snaps knocking on our door and soon the question rose (should we do a shift) we were getting the odd carrot and I kept saying "don't leave fish to find fish" although hard due to the unwanted species we stayed put - Snapper can turn up at anytime and this spot has fired just before the slack. More Kahawai and a few sharks, I thought it was time to shift then all of a sudden something grabbed my bait and my little Avenger sung away. I wasn't ready for it with it sitting in the holder and by the time I reached it, it had gone. "Stevo I think that was a snap man - I think they are here" It had taken a good 3-4hours for the first scent of a snap but then Stevo got smashed....Yea boy they have turned up but Stevo dropped it mid fight so we were still unsure.
    My next hook up stuck and it was a nice little pannie around 45cm, this was all I needed to know to stay. It was a little weird as it was now pretty much slack tide, this is when I like to fish for the carrots but were surprised as the snapper came on the bite hard everything else had left - no Kahawai - no Sharks and no gurnard it was all on with just snapper on the slack tide. It started to get a bit hectic with some nice 50-55cm fish coming aboard with the smallest around 40cm. It was crazy how everything had packed up and left the snapper to it, it was just bent rods and screaming reels. It was hot fishing right through that slack tide, snapper after snapper then as the boat slowly swung we picked up the odd gurnard as well. The big snapper hits slowed, a few more gurnard and then Kahawai came back as that current kicked in once again. We didn't mind to much as we now had a good 7-8 nice reds in the bin with 4 being that 50-55cm and with 3-4 big carrots keeping them company we had plenty of meat if we had to call it a day. We were keen to try for a couple more carrots so shifted to our gurnard spot.
    We managed a couple more carrots and were about to call it a day when something big grabbed my bait and once again my little bait-runner began to sing, this time it didn't stop. I flicked the lever and struck but it just kept on trucking, my rod buckled like a horse and it took a heap of line. I thought stingray but it had some nice big head nods to it and I knew it was big snapper time. It was a long scrap with it using the strong current to it's advantage, what a scrap it was and nearing the boat we could see the beast, it was a solid fish alright - I don't purposely target these big fish but when I do catch them it makes a special day turn into an epic one. I always try to release big fish and our boat rules are anything over 10lb that can be released we give it a good go. Not only are these fish our future but it's great to know it's back out there for someone else to maybe catch one day and to see a magnificent beast like this swim away makes that catch more so special. We took a couple pics and holding it in the water it felt good to feel a few good kicks from him. I let it go after a couple of mins and although it didn't go back down straight away, with it actually swimming around upright I knew it was just trying to get it's breath back. If a big fish is to far gone it will just belly up when you let it go but he was swimming fine and after another min disappeared back into the murky depths...
    What an epic ending to an awesome day back out on the lucky charm with Stevo, we had 3-4 nice big snaps each and about 4 carrots each. Once again we could have easy taken more but when you have some goodies in the mix giving you plenty of meat you really don't have to keep everything you catch.

      I do love catching fish but it makes a great catch more so special to watch a magnificent beast swim away. I try not to catch these bigger fish and def don't target them so will always try to release :-) - also when the fishing is hot it's great to be able to release a few back to carry on for future generations - great to be able to pick and chose with a lot of good healthy ones going back...

    Hey Jase, love watching your vids mate. Thinking about getting the same boat, had a look at one at Albany with a 40hp plus all the mods but was wondering if the extra 10hp make much difference and worth the $$. Saw your boat on the yard and really like the setup, hoping to be able to take the wife and two kids out on it too. Cheers

      Cheers KE for the support - I normally just have the 2 of us with a bit of gear and it does 20-22knts which I think is ample - the 40hp will give you a lot more get up and go and if paying the extra doesn't break the bank then up grade - if you don't you will still be able to do the same as one with a 40 but just a little slower - if you are thinking of towing the kids around at some stage then go the 40...
      Hope that helps and try talk to Mike and let him know I sent ya (He'll look after ya)

    Hey bro would you be able to do a video just on whats the best rigs for surf casting for the west coast and how to set them all. Up? Or do you already have a video on this? Cheers

    • @Reel-Kiwi-Fishing
      @Reel-Kiwi-Fishing  4 года назад +2

      Hi RRM
      I mainly just use the two set ups - one is the running rig and the other is the dropper rig. This is an older vid but pretty much haven't changed much in the way of the rigs - the dropper rig side of things you can use a flasher rig so already set up for you and use the ones that have the Mutsu hook - this is pretty much a recurve hook and fish hook themselves quite often - I also always have a J hook set incase I want to swap over and actually strike on the fish.

    Hey can those gurnard traces be used off the rocks or off the sand west coast matata?

    • @Reel-Kiwi-Fishing
      @Reel-Kiwi-Fishing  3 года назад

      Hi rrm
      It is just a strayline rig which you can use for the boat or rocks - when fishing from the rocks I use just enough weight to get the bait out - you can use no sinker at all (floating bait) which works really well. For off the sand you normally want to use heavier weight to get the baits out further especially out west, flasher rig with a 4-5oz breakaway works well for off the sand and gurnard come up off the floor to get baits. You can also use a running rig which will put your bait right on the ground.

      Hi Pt
      It can be great fishing in certain places but some spots use to be a lot more amazing fishing - my local use to hold good fish with lots of 20lb plus and average 10-12lb with plenty of 5-8lb but no longer holds these fish which is a shame. But yip Auckland does have a good fishery on it's doorstep just hoping I can still say this in 10-20yrs time :-)

    • @Reel-Kiwi-Fishing
      @Reel-Kiwi-Fishing  4 года назад +1

      Cheers TB for the kind words and great you are getting something out of them - we normally fish in the channels as I find the fish cruse them on there way to their feeding grounds or even mooching in them - the flats do hold fish like this but we like to drift these while softbaiting. We have anchored up just in the channel and berleyed for them on the flats so the boat doesn't disturb them to much - cool fun flicking back a floating cube of bait into a mtr and get smashed.

    Nice vid mate. Can I ask, how do you set up your strayline rig using braid?

    • @Reel-Kiwi-Fishing
      @Reel-Kiwi-Fishing  4 года назад +2

      Cheers J
      I double the end of my braid about 1ft long using a surgeons loop then do a back to back uni knot to join the trace - doubling the braid helps a lot and makes it sim thickness to the trace. I did this vid for work which shows you how to do the loop and back to back uni :-)

    Kia Ora I'm looking at buying my moko his first surf rod he goes fishing about every 3rd day at Mitimiti West Coast Far North that is their food box I
    have bought him a Shakespeare beach patrola 12ft but something inside me is not happy do you have some suggestions for me.

    • @Reel-Kiwi-Fishing
      @Reel-Kiwi-Fishing  3 года назад

      Hi GW-G
      Being a young fella and fishing a lot I would suggest sticking with a fiberglass rod for now - they can take a lot more punishment than carbon and are good to learn with. Although a little more heavier and sometimes bulkier, as he gets older he can move into that more lighter stuff.
      12-13ft is a good size to start with when young but fishing on the West coast I always fish with a 14-15ft rod which helps a lot. It will give you better distance and helps with west coast waves etc but depending on how young he is 12-13ft for the first year or 2 is a good start. If he gets comfy quickly and depending his age he could look at moving into something longer.
      If really young it can be difficult to fish a long rod. Most brands have a good rod and the great thing about shakespare is they can take a beating. Once he wants to move up then he could look at the likes of the 14ft Okuma Tournament concept rod - although they are a graphite rod they can take some stick and are well known for their glass like characteristics - it would be a good step up for him once comfortable. Below this you could look at the likes of the 14'6 Solaris or the 15ft Xfactor - this could be a little bulky why'll young.

      Hi yy s
      Not to sure you want to be drifting around in a Kayak - not only is it quite a dangerous area with many maritime disasters, massive currents and swirls but the great whites and big bronzies that roam the area is a little scary. Wind against tides which is around 3-5knts at times can chop up out of know where. I've never seen a Kayaker out there - haven't seen a white as yet but know someone that had one stropping out when it got caught up in his anchor and didn't see what it was but launching one time there was a massive splash with huge white water like a car fell out of the sky.

      I agree with jase not the best idea to go where the video was filmed in a yack
      Be a he’ll paddle anyway its 45 minutes in a boat
      You could launch a yak closer but still wouldn’t suggest it
      However over the summer period the Kaipara has alot of fantastic fishing which would be accessible by yak
      During the 1st level 3 which was arround may by memory my mates in lew of the boat being available were getting some very nice fish

      Have yet to really fish the area and wary about that area especially in the little tin - would prob softbait it as I have herd of boats going down due to trying to retrieve there anchor. Maybe get there one day - will be back up at the entrance doing a bit of surfcasting by using the little tin to get there ;-)

      I took my 430 up there a few times
      Ive found best is outgoing tide
      Easterly wind of 5 knots or less
      And swell smaller the better but under half a meter is ideal
      Had 2 stunning days out there in the 465 in the 1st level 2 cought some stonking fish happy to let you follow me up one day if you want just gotta pick a perfect day
