What's even better than manual tie points on the side of a building, is to use a reflectorless total station to get the coordinates of those points.

Using a GNSS Receiver as a base for RTK and also using Targets on the ground that you have staked out with the receiver is essential for an accurate map. Carlson Photocapture, while not the prettiest for 3d modelling is by far the more accurate software for surveying and you can buy a standalone license so if you have a decent PC (think i7 with 64gb ram) you don't need to pay a massive monthly fee to process big projects. I managed to get within centimeter accuracy of true position with the software (basically survey quality, other software claims it can but never really gets within an inch, it's impossible without a base station to get within an inch even with RTK to the state server).

I used the Pix4d app and tested changing out the battery mid-way through the automated flight. I found out that the app lets you 'continue' the mission after landing the drone, turning off the drone, switching out to a fresh new battery and powering back on. It actually worked! Has anyone else tired this before?

This is the reason I searched for drone deploy and pix 4D I would never go and try mapping without researching so I’m glad I’ve found you.

Here's the reality for drone mapping from an armchair lawyer ;-)
It's still a young technology to use drones for mapping, so things are still being worked out with the regulations. The state codes will be changing to better define what can and cannot be done by unlicensed surveyors providing data for topographic mapping. The big caveat is will this topographic mapping be used for design work by civil engineers or architects. So i.e., doing volume calculations for a rock quarry would not be considered design work. If the mapping data is used for design work and you find a surveyor or engineer or architect to sign off on it, that licensed professional is taking a risk with their liability insurance. If there is a mistake caused by the mapping, there is a very good chance their liability insurance will not pay for that costly mistake since it was supplied by an unlicensed professional. Unlicensed drone companies have to follow their state code, they do not have to follow the regulations of whatever the licensing board is for their state. So while technically the drone company may not be presently breaking their state code, a licensed individual may be breaking regulations of their state board. A lot of licensed individuals are ignorant of the exact wording of their regulations and they could also get in trouble for signing off on data that comes from an unlicensed provider.
