  • @jeffdavenport4829
    @jeffdavenport4829 2 месяца назад +14

    Now as a pilot I could tell you that there are some airports the FAA classifies as special certification airports based on surrounding terrain, complex airspace like Regan which flies past the DC no fly zone or capital hill, etc. Jackson Hole is one of those airports based on how complex the approach is and the fact the airport is in the middle of a valley surrounded by mountains. In order for the flight to be conducted the captain must be certified to conduct operations at that specific airport and their certification expires usually every 12 months. Now, even though it was an Alaska branded flight, it is operated by their regional parter Skywest and they are the one’s responsible for scheduling the crew for flights operated by Skywest. The fact that Skywest crew scheduling staff didn’t know that either this pilot’s certification expired or they just never received it is beyond me and is inexcusable. For this instance, even though it is an Alaska branded flight, blame Skywest, not Alaska. Alaska is not responsible for scheduling crews for flights operated by Skywest or their other regional partner Horizon.

      Indeed very odd that corporate didn’t catch the snafu with the pilot or the pilot didn’t decline the flight. I wonder if it started out ok but weather changed en route. As a pilot sense the mid 70s I can say that there’s a lot of aluminum imbedded in the mountains surrounding Jackson Hole airport. At the end of the day the pilot has the final say concerning any flight.

    The comments reinforce my belief that the current mainstream media makes people dumber on purpose. The pilot wasn't certified to land at that specific airport which requires special training due to its difficult approach. The question you should be asking is why did Skywest assign this pilot for this flight when they should have known he didn't have the right paperwork or training.

    I flew for SkyWest in the E175 and operated to JAC many times. At skywest JAC is a captains only landing and it requires a checkout with a line check airman prior to dispatching there as PIC. I guess this captain was missing the checkout but why he accepted the flight is a mystery. I’m guess he didn’t read the company pages in his Jepp charts until they were airborne and that’s where they would have seen the qualifications notes.

    Newsnation you're starting to piss me off. Get your facts straight and quit the clickbait titles like 95% of other 'news' outlets.
    SkyWest spoke with Cowboy State Daily, writing that a paperwork mix-up was behind the issue.
    “(Flight 3491) landed for a short time in Salt Lake City to correct a paperwork error related to the flight crew,” the airline told the outlet.“The flight continued to Jackson Hole after a delay while a new pilot was secured to operate the flight. All pilots involved were qualified to fly and land the aircraft; the flight diverted from Jackson Hole due to an internal administrative error and out of abundance of caution.”

    It appears the pilot might have realized it was a special qualifications airport during the approach briefing. A little late in the process. At least the pilot was honest and now a little more aware when agreeing to what and where they are to be dispatched. Crew scheduling might also be at fault for dispatching a pilot that didn’t meet the qualifications of that airport. SkyWest operations were safe that day, checks and balances ultimately worked. The mistake was corrected before a legality was infringed upon.

    The pilot knew his destination, and he knew he wasn't qualified. Why did he even take off? Why did he accept the flight assignment? Obviously, he had never landed there before. This is afu.

    It’s not the pilots fault. The pilot did the right thing. This kind of thing happens all the time. It’s not unusual to get on an aircraft out of Dallas headed to a smaller airport like Durango and find out when the plane gets there that the plane can’t land at the airport because the runway is too short for the aircraft, or the pilot isn’t qualified. These things aren’t caught until the pilot is preparing to land. It’s the airlines fault. They are the ones that scheduled the pilots and the aircraft and they are making mistakes that are causing aircraft to divert and delay passenger arrivals.

    Wasn’t qualified or wasn’t certified ? ….Thats two completely different situations. The pilot may have discovered his certification just expired because he didn’t pay the fee….kind of like f an electrician or nurse doesn’t renew their license. They’re still qualified, just not certified.

    Sound like he was assigned to fly a route, I can imagine refusal to do so wouldn't have ended well, he was qualified to take off from departure location, but not type rated to land at the destination, I can only imagine had he landed anyway it would have been a fireable offense, easy call he made the right decision.
