Quake 2 on Switch looks exactly the way I remember from PC. You had to have a 3dfx card, but yeah it looked like that. The models now animate smoother and you have anti aliasing, but the textures are identical, which is good. It's basically done just like Quake 1 remaster. All in all, perfect, love it! RGT, the textures weren't upgraded at all, but we have linear filtering there, just like on 3dfx, so it's kinda smooth. But that's okay.

Whats more exciting, is we get 2 entirely different versions. N64 Quake 2 had entirely different levels, is was not the PC version. Nintendo felt people wouldn't buy it due to the fact most people had already played it on the PC, and therefore wouldn't be willing to shell out more money just to play the same thing again. So they opted for all new levels thus making it a version no PC player had played before.

At that particular time it was considered the best version of Q2 due to the power of the X360 providing fluid 1080p/60fps game play and improved lighting. Granted, it was nothing compared to this new shadow dropped enhancement. Now if only EPIC Games would give us some Unreal games using Unreal 4 or 5, or whatever version it is at now.

The lighting in the original game was nowhere near as good as this remaster. It makes a massive difference to the overall presentation and is why it feels so modern.
I also love the compass as I'd always get lost in the original game.

Wolfenstein, Doom, Quake, and Duke Nukem are my very favorite shooters. Stuff after that isn't really fun to me. I guess I'm aging myself.

In the 90s it felt like going from 1 to 2 was a big improvement. AOE 1 to 2, Diablo, Street Fighter, Mortal Combat, Sonic, Masters of Orion, they generally took what worked and just made a better version.

Off topic slightly. I have been playing quake 1 on ps5 AND the series S XBOX. And, it's like two completely different looking games that are identical twins. It's weird that they are both the same yet radically different. Now I played the series S using cloud gaming, and unlike the playstation streaming service, it actually works a treat. I'm actually blown away by both versions of the same game.
However I did download quake 2 on Xbox gamepass and it's awesome. The super shotgun is awesome. The feedback is awesome. The punchy gun sounds.
God I miss the old keyboard and mouse quake 3 arena on Dreamcast.

Another thing I noticed is that gyro support is also on PC, when you disable SteamInput and use a DualShock or Switch controller. As for the PS4 version, I cannot confirm if that version has it.
Anyways, apparently the PSX version of Quake II is going to be coming in an update. People really need to congratulate Nightdive on their remastering efforts. They're consistently above the rest.

Yeah, it's so insane that it can't hold a locked 60fps with all the post processing effects turned on.
You know what is insane? Ps5 and Series X run it at 4k and 120fps with all post processing effects turned on.
Don't lie when Switch Up noticed frame drops.

Awesome video. I just saw on my switch last night that quake 2 was available and got super excited. Brings me back to 1998, playing it on my buddy's n64. Had to decide whether to get it on Steam or Switch, and I think I'll do the switch because this might be a perfect portable game while on the go. Or maybe both... idk yet. Switch first though...

I bought the game for the switch. I had received the update for the PC because I already had Quake 2 but I still played through the main Q2 campaign on the switch and had tons of fun. It's just a great experience. Regardless of which port you play, this is a game that deserves your time. This review doesn't mention the Call of the Machine expansion, it's a new one created by MachineGames and it's worth your time. id has given love for the switching with all the ports, all of the games are worth your time and money
