Good and thorough review. Needs to point out that all those “fancy” features like touch control were invented long time ago and used in Parrot Zik headphones which I am an owner till now. I was looking for a replacement due to Zik’s ear buds condition and considered BO the highest model however these are looking better option bearing in mind that I travel a lot. I would like to hear how Momentum 4 feels on head in respect to its weight and in comparison with Sony and Apple? Thanks.

Can you use the Momentum 4 in Wired mode over usb-c using a usb-c to usb-c cable with an Android phone or a laptop computer?
This is an excellent question. I can confirm that you can use a USB-C to USB-C cable with an Android phone. I tested this with my Galaxy S22 Ultra. You can also record the microphone via USB-C as well for higher quality audio in both the voice recorder and camera apps.

Is the headset turned on or off? Can you turn off the headset and rely on the usb-c cable to provide enough juice to keep the headset powered on while using the mic and the speakers? Or does the battery drain even when used wired over usb-c?
Can you, please, test using wired both powered on and off? Finally, can you activate ANC when wired?

2. No. Since they need to be powered on for USB connection.
3. I have not noticed any significant battery drain over USB. Most likely due to the 60 hour battery life.
4. I did test this. Needs to be powered on to work over USB.
5. Yes. You can activate ANC and Transparency while in USB mode.

I was hoping I would be able to use it wired when some days I find them dead without any battery left because I forgot to charge them. Happens a lot with my current Sony that I find them with 0 pct battery. Plugging in the USB-C to my phone and start listening to music and calling even with 0 battery when I forgot to charge them would be a game changer.

I bought a pair as soon as it dropped. Receiving it in a a couple of hours sooooo excited. I only started looking for a new set recently when I discovered the new momentum 4 release was the next day. I assumed It was meant to be🤣. Although bummed no new pxc models coming into the market.

Excellent review as usual. Are you intending on reviewing the Master & Dynamic mw75 wireless headphones? I would love to hear your views on that product and comparison to the Sennheiser Momentum 4 and Sony-XM5.
Not at this time. M&D have not responded to my requests.
I had the M4 for two days. I had the Beoplay H95, the instruments expecially the guitar was phenomenal but sometimes the vocals is natural but i could hear the "S" and "T" in vocals. Cymbals was so natural that my ears got fatigued from it, everything sounded natural, but the sound frequency was kinda weird, metalic like sounding, thin, less presence, soundstage had length but small width. When i listened to the M4 it's so meaty, the low end gorgeous, everything is so lovely to my ears and can we say they are way comfortable even little more roomier than my old headphones, ANC top notch, although I do love the extra flavor vocals from Cardi B when she lets the rrrrrr on Bodak Yellow on my old headphones, but probably the M4 is more natural. The bass, rhythms, musicality made me dance a little. Best Headphones i had, can listen hours and hours. Listening to the beatles with my old headphones guitar tuning keys was gorgeous but fatiguing, could still hear it on the m4 without being overly bright, more like behind or less present. This headphones is like going to a concert i could hear the bass from the instruments from the floor to the hears. Sadly i have to give my h95 to a sibling whose wants a headphone.

I had the H95s too. They were fantastic, wonderful, very well could be the best wireless headphones on the market. But I do think you can get most of their sound for a fraction of the price elsewhere, and I just don't know if I could justify the price when vastly cheaper used offerings off ebay could be $200-$300 and offer 70% of the sound. More than good enough for me. So much diminishing returns in audio.

@@alexsmith1207 Yeah, their carrying case also smelled like luxury. I'll keep on eye out on them, and once they get to around $400 on ebay I might get them again. Also every year or so the headphone market has to be re-judged again as a bunch of new offerings come to market. I can spend hours researching headphones, can become a very expensive hobby.

Hey Jeff! Got another question and recommendation request. I’ve been listening to the Sennheiser 560s, and have really enjoyed the detail, sound stage and imaging,(My highest valued aspect in sound quality) but I’m longing for more bass. I am by no means a bass head, but like a clean, tight bass. Nothing muddy or boomy. I’m not sure if that’s just not something I’m going to find in a pair of open back headphones, as I’m new to the over ear world. I was hoping for some recommendations, open back or closed back, for headphones under $300. I’ve really enjoyed getting a LG V60 to run wired audio equipment per your recommendation! Long post, but thanks so much for the recommendation, information and guidance!

I test all headphones and earbuds with both an iPhone 13 Pro Max and Galaxy S22 Ultra to ensure quality across both operating systems. Thankfully these still sound great on both so long as you listen to high quality audio.

I agree that the XM5 had the best mics. I disagree about needing to look at the HD600 or 650 for this app- those aren't competing with ANC cans! And I already own both but I also expect Sennheiser to sound like Sennheiser. If I wanted Beats...I'm wondering how the Apt X HD compares to LDAC but there's no way to really tell. LDAC brings substantial improvement on my XM3s. Thanks for the in-depth review.

What EQ settings do you recommend
For you, it's been a year.. On some more recent reviews, the App now has a 5-band EQ. My question is: Since I don't like bass-forward cans, does the new 5-band EQ work well enough to balance out the audio spectrum? I do like deep sub bass.. but only more naturally, and not pushed forward. I also don't care for low midrange forward, or high bass forward. If the 5-band EQ can balance out the V-shaped sound, I would indeed buy these cans... Your thoughts, please?

I have the PXC 550-ii and chose those over the Momentum 3 primarily due to the weight factor, found the PXC way more comfortable for my head.
Am I assuming correctly that they have merged the PXC into the momentum 4 and technically discontinued the PXC series...
What do you think?
I was also waiting for a PXC 550-iii to be announced (currently using the PXC 550 first gen for the same reasons and travel friendliness, which is slowly falling apart now) and when seeing the M4, I was thinking the same. I hope they are just as comfortable as the PXC 550, I really like all the rest about the M4. I just think the design could have been a little more exciting... If they don't fit my ears, I'd go for the B&W PX7 S2, which sound very similar to the PXC (the original PX7 don't), or the Technics EAH-A800 which also sound nice, although different. Both have very spacious earpads like the PXC.

@@larrymtz83 I didn't compare them directly yet but I had the opportunity to listen to both of them already. I'd say they are both equally good, just tuned differently: The M4 can deliver more bass and sounds more fun, the PX7 S2 sounds more neutral and maybe more refined. The M4 doesn't sound as dark as the Sony XM5 but still can hit harder in the lows, and you can reduce the bass if it's too much. I think the PX7 S2 has a slightly more natural timbre in the mids, the treble and the soundstage is equally good on both from my memory. The amount of bass is good on the PX7 S2, more than the old PX7, but not on M4 level.

Above 70% volume it becomes noticeable. Pretty much on par with most other wireless headphones.

Literally just bought my XM5's today; the earpads feel like they're sitting on top of part of my ears, so I wasn't sure about keeping them (kind of getting used to it). My return window runs up to 8/23, so I think I might have to give the momentum 4's a pre-order in a couple weeks.
I use HD660s for my main headphones, so if the sound signature is closer to those the trade should be well worth it. (the 60 hour battery life is also kind of insane)
The XM5 are excellent! Enjoy them in the meantime!
I think the Sony XM5 and XM4 over ear headphones are very overrated (have owned the 4, tried the 5). The noise cancel is great but like you said, the ear pads sit on your ears and they get very hot and sweaty. This problem gets worse with time, not better, as the earpads aren't very cleanable
Im not sure if the Momentum 4s look too comfortable unfortunately, but we'll see once they're out
I also tried the XM5 and liked them quite a bit. But also for me, I feel the earpads and also my ears touch the drivers. It's a lot better than the XM4 which touch all parts of my ears, and also the sound on the XM5 is way better (less muddy bass, clearer mids).
I always liked the Sennheiser sound better, and even though the Momentum 3's bass is pretty heavy, they're far more rounded and clear overall. I currently use the PXC 550 which have an almost perfect sound for me. Just a bit forward in the mids, but less bass heavy and everything is there and very clear. Also they're still the most comfortable out of the bunch. I'll try the Momentum 4 but I'm afraid they won't fit my ears...
You might want to try the Technics EAH-A800: Also a very clear sound, just slightly recessed in the upper mids and a bit loose in the upper bass. But they are very comfortable for bigger ears. Also another great option is the just released B&W PX7 S2 which sound similar to the PXC 550 (and a lot better than the old PX7) and have very spacious earpads. Just a bit higher clamping force.
@@PantsaBear Yep, I had the same problem. That' why I returned them. When it comes to comfortable, Bose QC headset are the best ones I have tried.
@@VeitLehmann Same with me. Hate my ears touching the bottom of the cups. Best (for fit) I've tried so far are the AirPods Max that completely cover my ears.

I rarely use the cans I have now bcuz I'm always moving around doing something, therefore I use wireless earbuds instead, but I'm VERY interested in these. I enjoy the MTW3 & the CX Plus quite a bit & can imagine how good these are

thanks for the amazing review. I have one question, how do these perform with heavy metal/rock? I've used XM4 before and it was surprisingly bad with rock/metal music. I will listen to heavy metal most of the time and looking for a good pair of wireless headset to do this. Is this what I'm looking for, and if not, can you recommend something better?
On the sennheiser smart control app you can choose what genre of music you listen to and it will pesonalize the sound. The app also has a thing called sound check where you listen to your music, it gives you different steps and you choose from different options of sound type and then it will be personalized for you. I listen to rock on them and there is no problem
Can you use the EQ settings in USB-C (wired) mode? I've heard you can, but I'd want to make sure.
I just recently received my momentum 4 headset.. and I'm not getting any response with the EQ. Maybe it's just me but it doesn't seem to change any part of the sound.
Momentum 3 is a u shaped sound not really V. Does the sub bass beat the airpod pro max? Thought the M3 sounded better but was missing the sub bass vs APM.

Yes! I can confirm you can indeed use the mic when wired with the included USB cable and the headphones powered on. I tested this on a Windows 10 and successfully recorded audio through Audacity.
Via bluetooth it will be hit or miss depending on how good the bluetooth radio is on your PC or laptop.
You know, I am so happy you exist. I am in between rock and a hard place, choosing between Momentum 4's and Airpods Max, and there is so much bull on youtube, and you do not know who has been bought and paid for (much of them are) but we know you give it straight. I am baked deep in to Apple ecosystem, as in Mac, iPhone etc ... but Airpods Max price tag is ridicolous, I am wondering, if that integration in to Apple ecosystem worth overpaying for or will the M4's bee just as good of a choice. I have gone through some Pioneer's, Sonys and Bose 700, and all of them gave me pain around ears and some heating up after short time of wear, what is seducing me on side of Airpods Max is their fabric ear-cushions. What say you, Jefe, what should I do?

Would you still prefer these over the XM5? I just watched a video where they say the Momentum 4s have finicky touch controls that are not consistent. I’m debating if I should get either of these.
Controls have been consistently good with mine.

I'm looking for perfect anc wired 3.5 and USB c with decent bass for pc/gaming and m4 such a sweet spot between airpod max and xm5. Does m4 v shape sound similar to jbl/soundcore harmon target curve ? Just worried about muddy mids but I think this is the ultimate dream headphone I've waited for all this time. Sony xm3/4 sounded really dark and muddy and distorted even using ldac whjch i had to return so have no faith in xm5 sound quality can't wait to try m4. Loved m1 original and I know they had signature sound but im not after that flat sound anymore. If this is not nice ill just try soundcore q45 but already tried and returned q35 as not good for long session ear ache after a while, love the anker q10 red/black and black in particular as per your recommendation) q20 would be my ultimate budget headphones all in one if they supported anc in wired mode its a shame cos older revision of q20 did support anc in wired mode. Oh one more bonus winning point about m4 has to be aptx ll support could work as perfect wireless gaming headset if the lag is negligible using creative bt dongel which supports both aptx and aptx ll. (Dongle also supports aptx HD but m4 don't).
This was by far the best review I got out of internet. I'm still trying to choose between XM5 and M4. Sound is priority for me, but I listen more to Alt-Rock and Folk, so I've heard that Sony handles that better.
Idk about that music genre, but having both, the M4's sounds is incredibly better than the sonys

Wow thank you! I was thinking to use them on pc for gaming. As like a hybrid set of headphones I can casually game on and take with me when I go out. Although as you said, their soundstage is not huge.

Alright! I'm back. I can confirm you can use the mic when wired with the included USB cable and the headphones powered on. I tested this on a Windows 10 and successfully recorded audio through Audacity.
Thinking of replacing my bose qc35ii with these, or should i look at something else?

Any issues with the head tracking sensors? I've owned the AirPods Max for roughly half a year now and used to think they were awesome, but these last two months or so, I've been having issues with them disconnecting from my devices very often. I assume it has something to do with the head tracking, since it's more likely to happen whenever I slightly adjust their position on my head, but cleaning the sensors or doing a factory reset doesn't seem to make a difference whatsoever. By now, it's annoying me so much that I'm considering replacing them with another pair of headphones. The top contender for me is the Momentum 4, but I'm also feeling kinda reluctant to buy another pair of headphones with head sensors due to my previous experiences.
As far as I'm aware, the Momentum 4 DO NOT offer head tracking like the AirPods Max. If you're referring to the wear detection sensors, those only control the automatic play/pause function.

I don’t know if that’s what’s messing up my AirPods Max, but it seems likely since it usually happens whenever I’m touching/adjusting the headphones. I’ve tried turning off automatic head detection with the problem persisting though, so I’m not really sure.
In any case, I take it you didn’t experience any detection issues with the Momentum 4?

Why would I compare an open-back wired headphone to a closed-back wireless? That's not an apples-to-apples comparison. These are two different tools for two different jobs.
Is the sound signature noticeably different between wired and wireless usage when turned on in both cases?

What I often seen is that plugging the cable can either disable features OR downgrade the headphone sound.
