1987 Belmont Stakes - Bet Twice -vs- Alysheba

- Bet Twice, a narrow runner-up in both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness, reversed those decisions with a vengeance in the 119th running of the Belmont Stakes yesterday to deprive Alysheba of racing's Triple Crown.
Bet Twice took the lead before traveling a mile and stretched it into a 14-length runaway over Cryptoclearance, with Gulch finishing a nose back in third place. Alysheba, who had won the Derby by three-quarters of a length and the Preakness by half a length over Bet Twice, finished fourth as the 4-to-5 favorite, missing a $5 million payday by a huge margin and a $1 million bonus by inches.
Alysheba, who would have earned purses and bonuses totaling $5 million had he become the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978, was steadied in traffic turning for home, but the incident was minor and did not affect his chances of victory.
Bet Twice, whose lopsided margin was the fifth largest in the history of the race, paid $18 for $2 to win as the fifth choice in the betting and covered the mile and a half 1 under Craig Perret in 2:28 1/5. The son of the Nijinsky II stallion Sportin' Life and the Dusty Canyon mare Golden Dust is owned by Blanche P. Levy, the Cisley Stable and numerous minor partners, including the baseball personalities Pete Rose and Garry Maddox. Warren A. (Jimmy) Croll Jr. trains the New Jersey-based colt, who became the first Derby and Preakness runner-up to win the Belmont since Arts and Letters in 1969.

This was a great field. This race played out similar to Easy Goer's 1989 Belmont win. Both reversed second-place finishes in Kentucky Derby and Preakness for a huge win.
Bet Twice also earned the million dollar bonus for having the best record in the Triple Crown races!
Trainer Woodfor Cefis "Woody" Stephens (September 1, 1913 - August 22, 1998) couldn´t win a sixth consecutive Belmont Stakes. But his five straight Belmont Stakes victories is a record which is still valid after thirty years and will never be matched or surpassed.
Greetings from Venezuela.
Gone West is Quality Road's and Smarty Jones's paternal grandsire.
Gone West getting a mile and a half? Don't think so...had nothing past the mile.
Al Michaels had a great line in the aftermath of this race on the unedited broadcast. Something along the lines of, "I guess it should have been Bet Thrice" Classic!
Alysheba ran against a tough field and didn't quite have his best on that day. Gulch and Cryptoclearance are good horses and it wouldn't be the last time they tested (and sometimes finished ahead of) Alysheba and Bet Twice.

Bet Twice was what you call a "stayer" and proved it here. Losing close races to Alysheba in the Derby and Preakness, he crushed him and every other horse in the longest racer at Belmont. In a few years we would see it again in Easy Goer vs. Sunday Silance. Easy Goer lost by a nose to SS in the Preakness, but buried him and him AND THE rest of the field in the Belmont.
It's my theory that Irish horses make the difference. Bet Twice had the great Princequillo in him (who was in Secretariat), and Turn-To, who you can find in many Belmont winners. It may be a bum theory, but it worked here.
Alysheba was a stayer. Irish breeding angle.. don't think so. No Lasix most likely reason.
@@JoeKoOhNo I think they found a way around the Lasix issue eventually but not here
Gone West also had some Princequillo in him, via his grandpa Secretariat.

I love the graphics when they show how long each race was. LOL
It is wonderful to rewatch these runnings. Alysheba ran so inexplicably poor. Also, the horses that so added to the breed as far as being stallions were Gulch, Gone West and Cryptoclearance. This was probably one of the better Belmont fields where these horses went on to bigger and better things. I still cringe at Perret's arrogant response concerning his ride. Perret's massacre of the English language..... ugh! BRIAN
Alysheba ran without Lasix. Big story all week and only got bigger after this race.
Bob Levy lifetime owner of Racehorse 😎👍
Interesting how this Belmont scenario is similar to what occurred in the 1989 Belmont concerning Easy Goer and Sunday Silence. A dominant performance denies a Triple Crown.
A cold exacta of the second choice over the favorite in all three Triple Crown races in $1989 yielded $60.00+ for every $6.00 wagered.
Gone West, Woody's horse, eventually gave us Elusive Quality, who gave us Quality Road and Smarty Jones.
Yes, Gone West turned into a terrific sire, and can be seen in many excellent h orses.
@@brucerobbins3584For sure, he was 1 of Secretariat’s best grandchildren.
Thanks for a trip down memory lane...they should bring back The Sidewalks of New York for the post parade instead of the cheesy NY NY...
Perrett rode some great h orses in Canada....Peteski, Izvestia
And after he began his career in thouroughbred racing in 1967, Craig Perret is still an active jockey. He has won more than 4,400 races including 1990 Kentucky Derby aboard Unbridled, American Pharoah´s grandsire.
Regards from Venezuela.
Gone West’s mother was Secrettame, a daughter of Secretariat.
Bet Twice blew em away and any chance of the Triple crown. When you look at final times I would not call 2:28 slow as Johnson did comparing it to to other final times over the years.
True. You can find other 2:28s. 2.29, 230, and even 2.31. Horses are not trained to run 12 f anymore. Maximum is 10 f. Which is why Secretariat's 2.24 will never be broken.
bne: It was a slow pace. What can you expect? The final time was the same as Citation and Count Fleet. Back then they were track records. Times have gotten faster, obviously, but Bet Twice's time was average, faster than some, slower than others.
Sec's will remains a record on dirt forever maybe, a perfect 12-clip. Two years later, Easy Goer ran the second fastest at 2:26 flat. A performance no better than Bet Twice , but a faster pace. So much for time....

He got the $1M bonus too
How is Craig Perret not in HOF? As an Ohioan I saw him ride at Churchill for years, I truly believe he should be in.
Good News Craig Perret is Elected To The Racing's Hall Of Fame.
Much deserved and overdue, been turned down for so long. Class act on and off the track.
Perret also rode some great horses in Canada. He may be in the Canadian HOF for jockeys.
I miss "Sidewalks of New York" in the post parade
Brian Henegar me too.

And I missed too. 119th. Belmont Stakes video must be more complete. Regards from a 56 year-old venezuelan citizen.
Alysheba really sh** the bed badly in this race.
McCarron simply rode alysheba wrong
Just curious to know what should have McCarron done in this race?
There was nothing Chris could have done. Bet twice would have won no matter what that day.
Maybe Alysheba could've gotten second or third and won the million dollar bonus?
Alysheba couldn't touch Bet Twice on that day
@@sSeSs808 McCarron should have put him on the lead..he broke on top..and they crawled...it was an extremely slow pace...as he proved throughout the rest of his career..these horse could never have touched him
Probably the worst ride of Chris McCarron's career
