I watch the show every afternoon. Down loaded the song . My grandson had his 5th birthday . He got a Conestoga wagon and horses. When he opened it. I sang "wagon train roll on!. Showed him how it went togetther. When we left he ran to the the car .here nana you keep this. I said no thats yours. He just smiled.
This theme was used in season two of Wagon Train, as most fans of the show know, first with vocals by Johnny O'Neill during the end titles earlier that season, then in instrumental form after that. Jerome Moross' more familiar theme debuted in 1959. (Henri Rene scored the first season theme in 1957, with lyrics by Bob Russell that were never used)
The music was written by the brilliant composer Sammy Fain (and lyricist Jack Brooks ). Fain is more famous for his film work and his Oscars, but Wagon Train may be his very best. It certainly is my favorite.
@Milton Moore Not true. This theme (although a different version) lasted ONE season, the 2nd season, and not even a full season, before being replaced by the instrumental.
His Music was also played in the western area of the amusement park "hansapark" an amusement park in northern germany #hansapark #hansaland #hansaparksierksdorf
Wagon Train lyrics Roll along Wagon Train. Rollin over prairie where there ain't no grass, Rollin over mountain where there ain't no pass. Sittin on a board eye in the weather, Prayin to the Lord We stay together Side by side on the Wagon Train. Wagon Train Roll along. Pickinup a passenger in every town, Wonderin if he's ever gonna shoot you down. Lookin for a pal, ain't it a pity, Lookin for a gal, needn't be pretty If she'll ride on the Wagon Train. Wagons ho! Gotta keep em on the run. Time to go! And follow the sun. Roll along Wagon Train. Never had a cabin near a general store, Only had a wagon and a forty four. Sittin on a board Eyein the weather Prayin to the Lord we stay together Sid by side on the Wagon Train..
originally I didn't know this wonderful western show had a theme song. When I first heard this song I luv'd it. Does anyone know if this song played till the end of show, if not, what other song replaced it? I was happily surprised to find this on RUclips! Thanks for the upload.
Internet movie database suggest that he was also the uncredited whistler in The Good, The Bad and The Ugly but that Johnny O'Neill was English, born 1926 and died 1999. Could be the same person, could be a mistake at IMDB. I have what I believe is a cover version of this song by actor Shane Rimmer (the voice of Scott Tracy in Thunderbirds) on a green label Columbia 45..
I love this theme song and I love Johnny O'Neill. What a great voice! I do have this record and several others by Johnny O'Neill. Does anyone know where he is now?
Wagon Train debuted in the fall of 1957 and I don't believe it used this theme song at that time. There was initially a kind of nondescript number and this replaced it in 1958. I think this Fain/Brooks version sung by Johnny O'Neill was the best and is superior to the instrumental which ran the most years.
I just watched S2 E25 of Wagon Train tonight (The Sister Rita Story) and Johnny's lyrics have been removed from the song starting with this episode. It's just the instrumental of the song without Johnny's beautiful singing voice :( I wonder why they took Johnny off the song and turned it into an instrumental? I vastly prefer Johnny's version with the lyrics. Ah well.
It's funny how some of these deals go down. WWE creates their own In House music but it seems that after a certain amount of time goes by, they stop using the songs they supposedly own, such as "Stone Cold Steve Austin's Classic entrance music, which they no longer play!
Actually, the composer of the theme that replaced it was Jerome Moross. Moross' theme was first used in 1961 and would be heard throughout the rest of the series' run on NBC.
Sitting with Johnny now we are his sons and family he's still singing as good as ever. It's nice to see that someone else enjoys his music ..

lovely voice and song.

oh, this version is lush and even more beautiful!!

My favorite of all the Wagon Trains songs. Too bad they only used it for about a year.
i wonder why
Right in the description is written that this song was not replaced until 1963, so it lasted for
SIX YEARS, NOT ONE.

Glad I got stoned and watched the retro channel at 5am, wouldn't have discovered this song otherwise
haha 4am and stoned here
not stoned, but addicted to the show
His family has to be glad to hear that!

All thumbs up...!!!
Wagon Train lyrics
Roll along
Wagon Train.
Rollin over prairie where there ain't no grass,
Rollin over mountain where there ain't no pass.
Sittin on a board
eye in the weather,
Prayin to the Lord
We stay together
Side by side on the Wagon Train.
Wagon Train
Roll along.
Pickinup a passenger in every town,
Wonderin if he's ever gonna shoot you down.
Lookin for a pal,
ain't it a pity,
Lookin for a gal,
needn't be pretty
If she'll ride on the Wagon Train.
Wagons ho!
Gotta keep em on the run.
Time to go!
And follow the sun.
Roll along
Wagon Train.
Never had a cabin near a general store,
Only had a wagon and a forty four.
Sittin on a board
Eyein the weather
Prayin to the Lord
we stay together
Sid by side on the Wagon Train..
The hearing impaired thanks you. Not exactly a difficult song to understand the lyrics.
sarge good man
There is an uptempo instrumental version of this arrangement occasionally played as the end theme. I wish I could find it.

This is my only 45 by him. Googling didn't show of his whereabouts

" Does anyone know where he is now?" Considering the age he would be, he is in his 80's or 90' or dead. He sung this song 60 years old.

maybe they would have had to pay him royalties?

I have long wondered if Johnny O'Neill were still living in NY. I last heard from him with a birth notice of his firstborn son.
Did Johnny appear on the tonight show with Bette Davis & sing Mariah?

You're wrong John!
Moross' theme was first used in 1959!
