I just miss when Barbie would tell fantasy stories. What happened to the unicorns & mermaids & fairys??? The retelling of ballets and classic fairytales??? At some point in the mid 2010’s it just shifted to realism and while that isn’t necessarily a bad thing; it just seems like they’ve forgotten the roots of the brand.
There's this interesting interview with Teale Sperling, who worked on the early years of the vlogs and was a production manager on Barbie: Dreamhouse Adventures. She's mainly known these days for working on Mattel preschool shows. Anyway, around 18:20, she mentions that Mattel thought that the movies where Barbie was playing characters in fairy tales and stuff didn't give her a defined voice. Barbie used to be an escapist movie to give fun. There's nothing wrong about that, look motherfckn *Ghibli.* The more mundane themes are very BOOORRINNG. I know they are trying to be more grounded, but if I watch movie that only about day to day life, then I simply not watch movie. I would simply life another day to day boring life. Oddly enough, the one thing I’ve consistently disliked about this era (despite my enjoyment of it) is how poorly integrated the fantasy roots are whenever they do try. Particularly in A Touch of Magic where the magical elements just felt like props meant to appeal rather than add anything important or significant in any real way. I don’t really agree Barbie should always be about fantasy either necessarily. I mean, arguably the most popular Classic Barbie movie happens to be the one with minimal magic involved. Of course, this era doesn’t (at least seem to) have the level of quality time/budget the earlier Classic films had (that typically enhances the world-building,) but I’d argue that Barbie media has always generally been more character-driven.
@@roseymatilda745That's true. The older Barbie movies did seem to have more going on. Plus the budget issues might be the difference between modern and old BCU. The old Barbie movies (specifically the ballet ones) used mocap on legit Ballerinas. And several Barbie movies were original stories as well as adaptations of books/folklore that with a little twist. A lot of variety was present, despite the different levels of quality.
original animated youtube videos which put characters into a more casual context where they directly talk to the viewers are SO awesome. the barbie vlogs and the shrek swamp talk videos are both really funny adaptations of characters into an original format that fits youtube and clearly have a lot of love and humour poured behind them
another thing is that barbie isnt a regular doll brand anymore. they only ever release budget or collector dolls with basically nothing of not inbetween. The mid-range stuff they do release dont relate to the media at all too....

I was blinded by nostalgia of older barbie movies, when i first watched newer generation barbie movies/series i was really surprised that it was really enjoyable. Yea im having cringe strokes while i watch but its still pretty nice especially for young girls. Out of all 52 episodes, there's only 4 episodes (Life Can Be A Dream, Time Will Tell, Getaway And Gotaway, and Curse Of The Miner's Ghost) that don't feature Barbie's sisters. I mean, even in Barbie: It Takes Two, which has Jackson and Jayla as the main kid characters, they still get more screentime.
I’ve come to not particularly mind the sisters tho the only one they seem to care about developing and keeping consistent as a character is Chelsea. I know no one really cares about her movie, but it’s only one out of this… trilogy that actually bothers to explore her relationship with her other sisters. Skipper particularly frustrates me as her own movie just kinda felt like an afterthought regarding this imo.

Speaking as a Barbie veteran (owned all the classic DVDs and multiple dolls) the older parts of the fandom rejecting modern Barbie is kinda... Sad. And also weirdly close minded for Barbie enjoyers of all people?? Lmao Yes the older movies are classics and they're very good, but the modern ones still managed to build their own charm, their own loveable characters, their own universes and the songs still slap!!! The nostalgia obsession is a bit worrying, given how the creativity of the media in general has been slowly deteriorating over time, bound by sequels and remakes (stares at Disney.) so seeing Barbie never be afraid to diversify her contents is very refreshing. Even if every modern Barbie piece isn't my cup of tea, I appreciate that it exists. Also she has top tier chemistry with Ken in this modern era, on par with the Life in the Dreamhouse series. Iconic. Honestly, as someone who genuinely likes none of the modern content, basically who you mentioned, its mostly bcuz they are making her relatable. For me, she's an idol, unrealistic, im one of those (possibly many kids) who doesn't see her as this "i wanna be" person. She's a doll! She has hundreds of career, let her be unrealistic! Let her be this untouchable woman! Watching this video does open my eyes that its still good ig. But it aint for me. So yeah, stripping all the princesssy and glamour of it made me avoid any aspect of it. Thats for me tho🤷♀️
i think it’s how bland the plots are and idk everything seems watered down…the movies used to have a lot more thought behind them and introducing kids to new ways to be creative…idk randomly putting in that barbie wants to be a singer or having her help with marine biology stuff doesn’t really feel like this is something barbie is passionate about like the old movies used to be (erika loved to sing so much she basically risked her life, and then when she was free she travelled the world on her own doing her passion…so barbie immediately becoming famous any time she does stuff doesn’t feel earned)

i’m kind of way late to this video but omg this rocked super hard!!!! i’ve kind of considered myself a tiny bit of a classic era barbie movie purist just because i’ve been afraid the newer ones would be bad and also because i adore so many of the (classic era movies so much and i have a tendency to dislike change, oops💀). i’m not a hater of the modern era or anything, i really just haven’t gone into it much at all. but i was so charmed by so many of the clips you highlighted in this video!! now i think the only thing about the modern era that still puts me off is mainly the fashion, but i feel way less averse to the newer animation style and voice acting (i just got so used to kelly sheridan voicing barbie in the classic era, and for some reason im partial to the older character models). (also as an aside, as a resident of the american southwest i found the bit about roswell hilarious!!!) but anyways this was awesome!! wonderful video !!!!!

Thank you for this indepth look at new Barbie! It certainly does have its own charm but I still do miss the era of Barbie movies that A Fairy Secret and the one where she goes fashion designing in Paris (Fashion Fairy Tale??), feels like we'll never see that version of Barbie again. Also ofc all the more fantastical takes on Barbie like Musketeers or Rapunzel or Princess and the Pauper or the Mermaid one. I can't say I don't care for Barbie's sisters at all, there was that one older Christmas movie with them that I feel nostalgic for and I love Barbie: Life in the Dreamhouse as a whole (Oh my god I just looked it up and it came out 2012 wtf it feels so much more recent) it just doesn't feel like the Barbie universe I grew up with. (I was so obsessed)
I'll be honest. I didn't think that there would be someone who would actually review any of the modern projects to this extent. I'll be honest and say that I have a soft spot for this world given how Barbie Dreamhouse Adventures is the first Barbie project I saw. To give a few miscellaneous thoughts: 1. Most of the movies do have their issues, but I still think they're good, even Chelsea's movie. 2. Despite my love for this world, my opinion on Barbie: It Takes Two has lowered quite a bit. It's attempts to be more humourous make it feel like the early episodes of Ultimate Spiderman and Avengers Assemble (which I guess is not a surprise since showrunner Marsha Griffin wrote on those shows). It makes most of the attempts at a story feel hollow, especially with how the stuff with Bertram Livesy and Otto Phoenix never gets resolved. 3. It does seem like Mattel is hesitant to make Brooklyn her own character. I mean, every project she's in outside of Barbie: Life In The City always focuses on her relationship with Malibu. 4. In regards to Barbie Mysteries: The Great Horse Chase, the look does take getting used to, but I don't mind it. Kickstart Entertainment has worked with the franchise before with the preschool special My First Barbie: Happy DreamDay. This seems to be their first non-preschool CGI project given how CGI projects like StarBeam and Deepa And Anoop are also preschool shows. 5. Sticking with Barbie Mysteries: The Great Horse Chase, showrunner Seth Kearsley actually talked about this show a lot on Twitter. He said how he wanted to purposefully go for a new look to convey a different tone. I do wonder how the show will turn out given how he got into a car crash during development, and much of what he did when he came back was either reworked or scrapped.
oh my gosh thank you for the tidbits this EXPLAINS EVERYTHING Ultimate Spiderman and It Takes Two. I totally see it now. I'm trying not to be too pessimistic about the Great Horse Chase! I like the look theyre aiming for, even if the execution is a little... not the best. but it's creative! And the premise of the show seems interesting too so we'll have to see how it goes! maybe one day I'll give the Chelsea movie a real chance haha
I’m intrigued about this new Mysteries route they’re taking too. It almost feels like they’re going back to this era’s origins as Puppy Adventure was also a pet-centric mystery. Mystery-adventure also seems like a much better fit for the general tone of the Modern era than what Touch of Magic tried to inject with the comedy-fantasy mix. I hope they do give Brooklyn a more significant solo role. Her route in Epic Road Trip didn’t feel like it was treated with the same emotional urgency that Ken’s had. I’ve yet to actually watch Touch of Magic S2, it seemed like they tried to give Brooklyn her own plot with the school play but it didn’t seem like a major focus? If they’re still wanting to be on the roll with secondary character movies, Brooklyn would be the perfect candidate for it. Wonder if this new series is potentially setting itself up for one? I would be down to watch a Ken one too. If only these movies are actually that dedicated to developing them as characters more, as I felt they didn’t try as much as they could’ve with Skipper and Stacie.

As a Barbie enthusiast🤓☝🏻: I am open to changes but my only concern about the new world of Barbie is the lack of depth in her everyday living, nothing intrigues or sparks me like before(Though A Touch of Magic has a potential, I’m giving it a chance). This franchise will turn decade old for the incoming years and I am hoping that we will get to see an improvement of this franchise. barbie vlogs legit helped me go through a very dark time in college. i was so depressed and lost because i was studying a major that i wasn't passionate about and i couldn't see the point of going through with my education if all i was ever gonna become is a cog in a machine (i've got other stuff going on too but that's mostly what made me so depressed). but she helped me realize that i could be more than my job and occupation. she made me realize that all i have to do is create the life i wanna live and have the right positive attitude to live it. i'm forever thankful to her vlogs and she's genuinely become one of my role models because of this. just how real she is in her vlogs despite her whole "perfect" branding (which isn't her fault ofc, it's just how she's being branded and marketed and she isn't even real but that's not the point). i also make it a point to tell people that my role model is barbie in the barbie vlogs (along with her in her old movies and current ones tbh, they're all great) to weed out any prospective friend or love interest. if they cringe or even make fun of this fact of myself that i take very seriously and pride in, they don't deserve to be a part of my life. remember guys, positive attitude changes everything!!!

Tbh you're right, the old Barbie vlogs will be missed. I personally think that Dream House Adventures feels to me like it's more... Marketed for kids than even the older Barbie movies? Because a lot of the old BCU movies actually seemed to be for both kids AND adults (Eg: Annelise and Erika wanting different types of freedom, Aiden overcoming his gambling problem out of guilt, Blair's parents getting MURDERED by her Aunt so she could get more power, etc) while the Netflix Barbie is a lot more goofy and has less variety in a lot of it's movies/episodes. Some are okay but they don't appeal to me as much (prolly cause of the slow burn- like i had NO IDEA there was Ken and Barbie confession IN THAT MOVIE YOU TALKED ABOUT. Girl, I WAS SCREAMING? Ken is healthy communication king, just like his BCU and Life in the Dreamhouse counterparts). ALSO Skipper not having a love interest is fine by me. Last time she had one was this dude in 'Barbie in a Pony tale'. He was alright, but I don't mind any of Barbie's sisters not being in a relationship.

Odette had her dad, both Anikka's parents are alive and same with Princess Ro. I guess Blair was an exception? Also her real parents were nonexistent in the films where she's an actress, so it's nice to actually see them in the modern version). I hope modern Barbie throws in some drama to make the story a bit more interesting and maybe have some variety for future movies!

As someone who has been following the Vlogverse since fairly early on (I wanna say around Princess Adventure’s release,) it is genuinely fascinating to see a perspective from someone who started with Epic Road Trip and how much that has impacted your judgement of the series, particularly with Ken. It made me think that I‘ve been too harsh on him and the Karbie pairing prior to ERT, but I still think they don’t utilise him (and the fact they literally made him the Friends to Lovers AND the Boy Next Door archetype, HELLO,) nearly enough. I was delulu and rooting more for Malibu B and Trey during the Dreamhouse era, as I genuinely felt like they got more viable screen-time with how their relationship developed throughout. I mean… here’s some food for thought; how come these writers decided to have Trey show up in Malibu B’s dreams TWICE and somehow Ken didn’t show up once, and Trey got several iconic episodes with Malibu B whilst Ken mainly got the Escape Room episode (tho I maybe underestimating the actual amount of Ken’s screen time judging by your clip montages, which btw I loved how gloriously long they were. No one else on this site is using them to this extent, so you may as well.) I also didn’t know a lot of the awkward Ken Love Interest moments were done by one particular writer, but it explains…. A lot. The transition to It Takes Two where Malibu B uproots everything for Brooklyn B was pretty brutal for me, and felt like that was where a lot of Vlogverse’s main issues you mentioned became prevalent. Not like they weren’t present at all during Dreamhouse, but abandoning the vlog structure really has made the rest of the series feel more…. directionless? I remember when I first watched ITT and having no idea what audience this was supposed to be for as it connected to neither what the Dreamhouse series or Big City Big Dreams managed to set up. The character assassination of Malibu B also bothered me SO much, and I’m one of those people that LOVES how she has been consistently written as an impulsive girl-failure (I just find it to be such a fascinating twist on Barbie imo.) I think it just bothers me that they just decided to fully commit to taking her down the generic singer pipeline instead of leaning more into her STEM interests. I also need to get around to watching Life in the City as I didn’t realise it was so Brooklyn B and Emmy-centric. Those two really did deserve so much more time together. It’s also frustrating how increasingly persistent this series is in wanting so badly to have-it-all with the comedy-fantasy elements when they’re often so generic and poorly integrated, particularly now they’ve decided to ditch maintaining a more grounded setting. I genuinely was more invested in the bizarre undercover operation setup Princess Adventure had going on than anything that happened in A Touch of Magic. I do respect how this series is willing to stay it’s own thing but the world in A Touch of Magic was so mind-numbingly dull, I WISHED they had sprinkled in more Classic Barbie Movie elements just to spice it up. I know this wouldn’t necessarily fix the glaring tonal/execution issues, but I certainly would’ve cared more about that pegasus if it had happened to be someone’s long lost relative for example. I feel like I’ve barely scratched the surface despite yapping for several paragraphs, but I’m sure you can tell that I’m incredibly passionate about my love/hate relationship with this franchise. i knew 10 year old me was making good decisions when she binged the barbie vlogs (w the mocap animation). i love that barbie as she feels so down to earth n casual, n bcs it's vlog format, the content still can be enjoyed in short periods of time. i'm one of the ppl that was turned off by the newer barbie movies, nvr watching them bcs they feel very corporate, childish n outdated (i know they use more modern elements but they seem to come from the era of snapchat/early internet jokes that can get pretty stale). also the art direction, fashion n animation is....not that pleasant to look at to say the least. Their clothes look very intended for making dolls (which probs is the whole point) but i think it def clashes with relatable, real-lifey vibes the show was going for. i would've loved to see more modern but fashionable outfits for every character as a natural evolution of barbie being a fashion icon. whereas in barbie life of the dreamhouse (love love that show), works immensely better bcs all the character designs/props/fashion are amped up to 11 on the campy/dolly/fashionista vibes bcs that's basically what the show was about, barbie's life as a doll. after watching your video tho, i'm actually hooked on watching the new dreamhouse series and epic road trip. glad to know that modern barbie still has fun, funny, character-developing writing along with good diverse characters that don't just feel surface level. i giggled way too much seeing your breakdown of epic road trip bcs why was the karbie friends to lovers chemistry too good?! i love that ken is a marine biology nerd, literally is an empath and a reliable shoulder barbie cud lie back on. barbie also being the awkward n uncertain one when it comes to forming romantic relationships bcs she's afraid it'll clash with her other aspirations but ken understanding it thru n thru, nvr forces anything on her, AND having good communicationn AAAA and the kissing scene???? *standing ovations* (i would've loved more if we had episodes dedicated to barbie n ken as a couple n all their nerdy dates/chicanery). i never thought romantic buildup between animated characters that felt mature and even relatable to my irl situations came from a netflix pick your story barbie movie! funny how the world works soooooo all this to say thank u so much for this video! i definitely agree with giving modern barbie media a chance AND let us start somewhere new with this barbie canvas cuz it's been a long decade already phew. will def tune in if you ever decide to do another deep dive/breakdown :D

There are a few reasons they might be constantly backtracking the Barbie x Ken romance. A. Early on in the doll line's existence, it was decided that the two, though always intended to be a romantic couple, couldn't ever marry. Barbie has to stay forever young, inspirational, and versatile, so she can't ever fall into the role of "mother" or "wife". Thus, all wedding lines are either explicitly "fantasy" or are for another couple (specifically Midge and Allan, who aren't held to the same restrictions). However, the natural progression for such a long-lasting couple is that they would eventually marry (or at least progress), which Mattel won't let happen, so the romance is effectively "rebooted" to recycle the same story beats. B. It's hard to write a multi-ending interactive movie, and not everyone will see the same outcomes. As a result, these sorts of choose-your-own-adventure stories tend to be non-canon and unpopular. You can't have major changes or reveals in scenes you can't guarantee will be watched. You can't have a confession be canon, because people will miss it and expect to see the will-they-won't-they in future installments. C. Barbie, the IP, was struggling - has been struggling - for a while. The dolls aren't being made with the same quality; social media was pushing the narrative that the IP is harmful and outdated; there was a rise in competing fashion doll brands; and people were boycotting the dolls in favor of more "relatable" options, that offered less glitter and more diversity. Mattel listened... and one of the things they apparently took from it was "people don't like Ken, so we should limit his presence in favor of more popular (and more diverse) characters". The end result is that we end up with quite a bloated cast, in all honesty, but Ken gets progressively more pushed into a comedic background role.
definitely! with your third point - I totally see the bloat. even when just watching adverts nowadays, there are SO MANY DOLLS AND SO MANY CHARACTERS. What gets me about this incarnation of Ken is that he is a fantastic main support character the few times he actually gets utilised. And the fact they’ve literally made him the Childhood Best Friend Next Door makes the decision to limit him even more baffling. I do like the idea of this Barbie having an entourage of friends for the occasional situation (like when she’s abroad in Princess Adventure and needing a bigger support system to counteract Johan’s swarm of bodyguards,) but primarily they should’ve just stuck to Theresa, Renee and Ken as the main friends. When heyomayo brought up that his current VA is Indian-American, and that he’s canonically done bhangra. It made wonder if it’s possible to actually make him be a white-passing Indian or happened to be raised in parts of the culture. That could actually be really interesting. We technically still haven’t seen his parents so it could still happen.

I grew up with 2009-2015 era barbie more than classic barbie so my last barbie movie which I thoroughly enjoyed was "Barbie Starlight Adventure". I don't dislike Barbie and her sisters stories but I don't think I have anything interesting to learn/enjoy/anticipate from Barbie and her sisters starring in multiple adventures. I don't find newer barbie movies that interesting in terms of main character personal goals (in the movie), themes they are going for and the overall worldbuilding (fantasy/sci-fi/high school). The stakes are based more in reality and feels like it leans more towards 6-9 years old and their life problems. To be fair, to me, they look too similar in terms of storytelling structure so I stay away from them and refrain from getting too negative about them online. I believe Barbie Dreamhouse Adventures was decent, from what I saw. However, it's not compelling enough for me to watch all episodes. Since classic barbies have that fantasy element in them (ballet, christmas, barbie twist to old fairytales), they were still very enjoyable to me when I first saw them in comparison to post 2015 barbie movies. Thus I appreciate the older classical barbies more despite not growing up with them. The last movie which kinda interested me was that video game one. It was cool in terms of worldbuilding but I "suddenly" felt it was written with almost invincible main characters and was too far away from my own taste and understanding of current childhood/teen interests. That movie made me realize that maybe, I have simply grown out of Barbie and am no longer going to enjoy anything they might put out. I just listen to Barbie music though. It makes me feel very happy. And vlogs! I have watched some of them when they first came out and it felt like a very smart move by company. That time when barbie lost her mind and desperately tried to save her "relationship confession" was hilarious.

I just miss when Barbie would tell fantasy stories. What happened to the unicorns & mermaids & fairys??? The retelling of ballets and classic fairytales??? At some point in the mid 2010’s it just shifted to realism and while that isn’t necessarily a bad thing; it just seems like they’ve forgotten the roots of the brand.
There's this interesting interview with Teale Sperling, who worked on the early years of the vlogs and was a production manager on Barbie: Dreamhouse Adventures. She's mainly known these days for working on Mattel preschool shows. Anyway, around 18:20, she mentions that Mattel thought that the movies where Barbie was playing characters in fairy tales and stuff didn't give her a defined voice. As such, they created this more down to earth teenage Barbie as a way to give her a more defined personality.

Oddly enough, the one thing I’ve consistently disliked about this era (despite my enjoyment of it) is how poorly integrated the fantasy roots are whenever they do try. Particularly in A Touch of Magic where the magical elements just felt like props meant to appeal rather than add anything important or significant in any real way.
I don’t really agree Barbie should always be about fantasy either necessarily. I mean, arguably the most popular Classic Barbie movie happens to be the one with minimal magic involved.
Of course, this era doesn’t (at least seem to) have the level of quality time/budget the earlier Classic films had (that typically enhances the world-building,) but I’d argue that Barbie media has always generally been more character-driven.

The old Barbie movies (specifically the ballet ones) used mocap on legit Ballerinas. And several Barbie movies were original stories as well as adaptations of books/folklore that with a little twist. A lot of variety was present, despite the different levels of quality.
original animated youtube videos which put characters into a more casual context where they directly talk to the viewers are SO awesome. the barbie vlogs and the shrek swamp talk videos are both really funny adaptations of characters into an original format that fits youtube and clearly have a lot of love and humour poured behind them

@@scarlettsmoak8977 I assume Barbie's sisters are pushed more because of how they're very prominent in Barbie Dreamhouse Adventures. Out of all 52 episodes, there's only 4 episodes (Life Can Be A Dream, Time Will Tell, Getaway And Gotaway, and Curse Of The Miner's Ghost) that don't feature Barbie's sisters. I mean, even in Barbie: It Takes Two, which has Jackson and Jayla as the main kid characters, they still get more screentime.
I’ve come to not particularly mind the sisters tho the only one they seem to care about developing and keeping consistent as a character is Chelsea. I know no one really cares about her movie, but it’s only one out of this… trilogy that actually bothers to explore her relationship with her other sisters. Skipper particularly frustrates me as her own movie just kinda felt like an afterthought regarding this imo.

Yes the older movies are classics and they're very good, but the modern ones still managed to build their own charm, their own loveable characters, their own universes and the songs still slap!!!
The nostalgia obsession is a bit worrying, given how the creativity of the media in general has been slowly deteriorating over time, bound by sequels and remakes (stares at Disney.) so seeing Barbie never be afraid to diversify her contents is very refreshing. Even if every modern Barbie piece isn't my cup of tea, I appreciate that it exists.
Also she has top tier chemistry with Ken in this modern era, on par with the Life in the Dreamhouse series. Iconic.

i think it’s how bland the plots are and idk everything seems watered down…the movies used to have a lot more thought behind them and introducing kids to new ways to be creative…idk randomly putting in that barbie wants to be a singer or having her help with marine biology stuff doesn’t really feel like this is something barbie is passionate about like the old movies used to be (erika loved to sing so much she basically risked her life, and then when she was free she travelled the world on her own doing her passion…so barbie immediately becoming famous any time she does stuff doesn’t feel earned)

I really really enjoyed this video. I do think the clips went on for way too long at times. I wanted to hear your commentary not watch unrelated barbie clips. But either way, this was a fun video and you did a good job. This serves as a solid introduction to modern barbie, and that includes having some clips! Just a bit too many for me.

i’m kind of way late to this video but omg this rocked super hard!!!! i’ve kind of considered myself a tiny bit of a classic era barbie movie purist just because i’ve been afraid the newer ones would be bad and also because i adore so many of the (classic era movies so much and i have a tendency to dislike change, oops💀). i’m not a hater of the modern era or anything, i really just haven’t gone into it much at all. but i was so charmed by so many of the clips you highlighted in this video!! now i think the only thing about the modern era that still puts me off is mainly the fashion, but i feel way less averse to the newer animation style and voice acting (i just got so used to kelly sheridan voicing barbie in the classic era, and for some reason im partial to the older character models). (also as an aside, as a resident of the american southwest i found the bit about roswell hilarious!!!) but anyways this was awesome!! wonderful video !!!!!

It certainly does have its own charm but I still do miss the era of Barbie movies that A Fairy Secret and the one where she goes fashion designing in Paris (Fashion Fairy Tale??), feels like we'll never see that version of Barbie again.
Also ofc all the more fantastical takes on Barbie like Musketeers or Rapunzel or Princess and the Pauper or the Mermaid one.
I can't say I don't care for Barbie's sisters at all, there was that one older Christmas movie with them that I feel nostalgic for and I love Barbie: Life in the Dreamhouse as a whole (Oh my god I just looked it up and it came out 2012 wtf it feels so much more recent) it just doesn't feel like the Barbie universe I grew up with. (I was so obsessed)
I'll be honest. I didn't think that there would be someone who would actually review any of the modern projects to this extent. I'll be honest and say that I have a soft spot for this world given how Barbie Dreamhouse Adventures is the first Barbie project I saw. To give a few miscellaneous thoughts:
1. Most of the movies do have their issues, but I still think they're good, even Chelsea's movie.
2. Despite my love for this world, my opinion on Barbie: It Takes Two has lowered quite a bit. It's attempts to be more humourous make it feel like the early episodes of Ultimate Spiderman and Avengers Assemble (which I guess is not a surprise since showrunner Marsha Griffin wrote on those shows). It makes most of the attempts at a story feel hollow, especially with how the stuff with Bertram Livesy and Otto Phoenix never gets resolved.
3. It does seem like Mattel is hesitant to make Brooklyn her own character. I mean, every project she's in outside of Barbie: Life In The City always focuses on her relationship with Malibu.
4. In regards to Barbie Mysteries: The Great Horse Chase, the look does take getting used to, but I don't mind it. Kickstart Entertainment has worked with the franchise before with the preschool special My First Barbie: Happy DreamDay. This seems to be their first non-preschool CGI project given how CGI projects like StarBeam and Deepa And Anoop are also preschool shows.
5. Sticking with Barbie Mysteries: The Great Horse Chase, showrunner Seth Kearsley actually talked about this show a lot on Twitter. He said how he wanted to purposefully go for a new look to convey a different tone. I do wonder how the show will turn out given how he got into a car crash during development, and much of what he did when he came back was either reworked or scrapped.

I’m intrigued about this new Mysteries route they’re taking too. It almost feels like they’re going back to this era’s origins as Puppy Adventure was also a pet-centric mystery.
Mystery-adventure also seems like a much better fit for the general tone of the Modern era than what Touch of Magic tried to inject with the comedy-fantasy mix.
I hope they do give Brooklyn a more significant solo role. Her route in Epic Road Trip didn’t feel like it was treated with the same emotional urgency that Ken’s had. I’ve yet to actually watch Touch of Magic S2, it seemed like they tried to give Brooklyn her own plot with the school play but it didn’t seem like a major focus?
If they’re still wanting to be on the roll with secondary character movies, Brooklyn would be the perfect candidate for it. Wonder if this new series is potentially setting itself up for one? I would be down to watch a Ken one too. If only these movies are actually that dedicated to developing them as characters more, as I felt they didn’t try as much as they could’ve with Skipper and Stacie.

I am open to changes but my only concern about the new world of Barbie is the lack of depth in her everyday living, nothing intrigues or sparks me like before(Though A Touch of Magic has a potential, I’m giving it a chance). This franchise will turn decade old for the incoming years and I am hoping that we will get to see an improvement of this franchise.
Also, do you like the new animation of Miraculous Ladybug because for me, it’ll take time. London Special is the last time we’re going to see it:

this video essay was so fun and silly!!! As an avid enjoyer of the old barbie movies I kind of dismissed modern barbie, and I never considered it could still be good too, so this video really showed me its good aspects, and while I may never watch modern barbie, I can at least say I don't hate it 😭

barbie vlogs legit helped me go through a very dark time in college. i was so depressed and lost because i was studying a major that i wasn't passionate about and i couldn't see the point of going through with my education if all i was ever gonna become is a cog in a machine (i've got other stuff going on too but that's mostly what made me so depressed). but she helped me realize that i could be more than my job and occupation. she made me realize that all i have to do is create the life i wanna live and have the right positive attitude to live it.
i'm forever thankful to her vlogs and she's genuinely become one of my role models because of this. just how real she is in her vlogs despite her whole "perfect" branding (which isn't her fault ofc, it's just how she's being branded and marketed and she isn't even real but that's not the point). i also make it a point to tell people that my role model is barbie in the barbie vlogs (along with her in her old movies and current ones tbh, they're all great) to weed out any prospective friend or love interest. if they cringe or even make fun of this fact of myself that i take very seriously and pride in, they don't deserve to be a part of my life.

Tbh you're right, the old Barbie vlogs will be missed. I personally think that Dream House Adventures feels to me like it's more... Marketed for kids than even the older Barbie movies? Because a lot of the old BCU movies actually seemed to be for both kids AND adults (Eg: Annelise and Erika wanting different types of freedom, Aiden overcoming his gambling problem out of guilt, Blair's parents getting MURDERED by her Aunt so she could get more power, etc) while the Netflix Barbie is a lot more goofy and has less variety in a lot of it's movies/episodes. Some are okay but they don't appeal to me as much (prolly cause of the slow burn- like i had NO IDEA there was Ken and Barbie confession IN THAT MOVIE YOU TALKED ABOUT. Girl, I WAS SCREAMING? Ken is healthy communication king, just like his BCU and Life in the Dreamhouse counterparts).
ALSO Skipper not having a love interest is fine by me. Last time she had one was this dude in 'Barbie in a Pony tale'. He was alright, but I don't mind any of Barbie's sisters not being in a relationship.

Odette had her dad, both Anikka's parents are alive and same with Princess Ro. I guess Blair was an exception? Also her real parents were nonexistent in the films where she's an actress, so it's nice to actually see them in the modern version). I hope modern Barbie throws in some drama to make the story a bit more interesting and maybe have some variety for future movies!

As someone who has been following the Vlogverse since fairly early on (I wanna say around Princess Adventure’s release,) it is genuinely fascinating to see a perspective from someone who started with Epic Road Trip and how much that has impacted your judgement of the series, particularly with Ken. It made me think that I‘ve been too harsh on him and the Karbie pairing prior to ERT, but I still think they don’t utilise him (and the fact they literally made him the Friends to Lovers AND the Boy Next Door archetype, HELLO,) nearly enough.
I was delulu and rooting more for Malibu B and Trey during the Dreamhouse era, as I genuinely felt like they got more viable screen-time with how their relationship developed throughout. I mean… here’s some food for thought; how come these writers decided to have Trey show up in Malibu B’s dreams TWICE and somehow Ken didn’t show up once, and Trey got several iconic episodes with Malibu B whilst Ken mainly got the Escape Room episode (tho I maybe underestimating the actual amount of Ken’s screen time judging by your clip montages, which btw I loved how gloriously long they were. No one else on this site is using them to this extent, so you may as well.) I also didn’t know a lot of the awkward Ken Love Interest moments were done by one particular writer, but it explains…. A lot.
The transition to It Takes Two where Malibu B uproots everything for Brooklyn B was pretty brutal for me, and felt like that was where a lot of Vlogverse’s main issues you mentioned became prevalent. Not like they weren’t present at all during Dreamhouse, but abandoning the vlog structure really has made the rest of the series feel more…. directionless? I remember when I first watched ITT and having no idea what audience this was supposed to be for as it connected to neither what the Dreamhouse series or Big City Big Dreams managed to set up. The character assassination of Malibu B also bothered me SO much, and I’m one of those people that LOVES how she has been consistently written as an impulsive girl-failure (I just find it to be such a fascinating twist on Barbie imo.) I think it just bothers me that they just decided to fully commit to taking her down the generic singer pipeline instead of leaning more into her STEM interests. I also need to get around to watching Life in the City as I didn’t realise it was so Brooklyn B and Emmy-centric. Those two really did deserve so much more time together.
It’s also frustrating how increasingly persistent this series is in wanting so badly to have-it-all with the comedy-fantasy elements when they’re often so generic and poorly integrated, particularly now they’ve decided to ditch maintaining a more grounded setting. I genuinely was more invested in the bizarre undercover operation setup Princess Adventure had going on than anything that happened in A Touch of Magic. I do respect how this series is willing to stay it’s own thing but the world in A Touch of Magic was so mind-numbingly dull, I WISHED they had sprinkled in more Classic Barbie Movie elements just to spice it up. I know this wouldn’t necessarily fix the glaring tonal/execution issues, but I certainly would’ve cared more about that pegasus if it had happened to be someone’s long lost relative for example.
I feel like I’ve barely scratched the surface despite yapping for several paragraphs, but I’m sure you can tell that I’m incredibly passionate about my love/hate relationship with this franchise. Given how large this brand is, I knew it had to be inevitable for this era to be talked about in depth eventually but I’m so happy it has happened now and not in the far future, so thank you

you know what I'm intrigued by your stance on Barbie and Trey. I kinda get it BUT(from the shows perspective) i think they show Trey quite a lot bc he's seen as more of a brother than Barbie's 'friend/enemy/FRENEMY???' so he's treated more like skipper/stacie/chelsea (and thus gets more screen time) plus he's easy to turn to for an antagonistic role while ken doesn't get to serve a unique function beyond 'i can surf good and I like marine biology'. (which, to go off topic, was NEAT AF when they used his bio knowledge to recognise an artic spruce pinecone-thing in the escape room ep. MAKE HIM A NERD!!!)
I WILL SAY that ken did show up in Barbie's dream in that one ep she dreamed she was the president or whatever and he had some WEIRD SEXUAL TENSION WITH ONE OF THE MANY BARBIES I SWEAR but um yeah your point still stands

i knew 10 year old me was making good decisions when she binged the barbie vlogs (w the mocap animation). i love that barbie as she feels so down to earth n casual, n bcs it's vlog format, the content still can be enjoyed in short periods of time.
i'm one of the ppl that was turned off by the newer barbie movies, nvr watching them bcs they feel very corporate, childish n outdated (i know they use more modern elements but they seem to come from the era of snapchat/early internet jokes that can get pretty stale). also the art direction, fashion n animation is....not that pleasant to look at to say the least. Their clothes look very intended for making dolls (which probs is the whole point) but i think it def clashes with relatable, real-lifey vibes the show was going for. i would've loved to see more modern but fashionable outfits for every character as a natural evolution of barbie being a fashion icon. whereas in barbie life of the dreamhouse (love love that show), works immensely better bcs all the character designs/props/fashion are amped up to 11 on the campy/dolly/fashionista vibes bcs that's basically what the show was about, barbie's life as a doll.
after watching your video tho, i'm actually hooked on watching the new dreamhouse series and epic road trip. glad to know that modern barbie still has fun, funny, character-developing writing along with good diverse characters that don't just feel surface level.

There are a few reasons they might be constantly backtracking the Barbie x Ken romance.
A. Early on in the doll line's existence, it was decided that the two, though always intended to be a romantic couple, couldn't ever marry. Barbie has to stay forever young, inspirational, and versatile, so she can't ever fall into the role of "mother" or "wife". Thus, all wedding lines are either explicitly "fantasy" or are for another couple (specifically Midge and Allan, who aren't held to the same restrictions). However, the natural progression for such a long-lasting couple is that they would eventually marry (or at least progress), which Mattel won't let happen, so the romance is effectively "rebooted" to recycle the same story beats.
B. It's hard to write a multi-ending interactive movie, and not everyone will see the same outcomes. As a result, these sorts of choose-your-own-adventure stories tend to be non-canon and unpopular. You can't have major changes or reveals in scenes you can't guarantee will be watched. You can't have a confession be canon, because people will miss it and expect to see the will-they-won't-they in future installments.
C. Barbie, the IP, was struggling - has been struggling - for a while. The dolls aren't being made with the same quality; social media was pushing the narrative that the IP is harmful and outdated; there was a rise in competing fashion doll brands; and people were boycotting the dolls in favor of more "relatable" options, that offered less glitter and more diversity. Mattel listened... and one of the things they apparently took from it was "people don't like Ken, so we should limit his presence in favor of more popular (and more diverse) characters". The end result is that we end up with quite a bloated cast, in all honesty, but Ken gets progressively more pushed into a comedic background role.
definitely! with your third point - I totally see the bloat. even when just watching adverts nowadays, there are SO MANY DOLLS AND SO MANY CHARACTERS. I really don't know what strategy mattels going for but whatever it is it's CONFUSING AF and I don't like it lol
and with your second point - that's probably the main reason the kiss felt SO OUT OF LEFT FIELD FOR ME like what do you mean you used a NETFLIX INTERACTIVE to make 2 characters kiss after over a decade
in summary: barbie is a little confusing with its decisions a lot of the time lol
What gets me about this incarnation of Ken is that he is a fantastic main support character the few times he actually gets utilised. And the fact they’ve literally made him the Childhood Best Friend Next Door makes the decision to limit him even more baffling.
I do like the idea of this Barbie having an entourage of friends for the occasional situation (like when she’s abroad in Princess Adventure and needing a bigger support system to counteract Johan’s swarm of bodyguards,) but primarily they should’ve just stuck to Theresa, Renee and Ken as the main friends.
When heyomayo brought up that his current VA is Indian-American, and that he’s canonically done bhangra. It made wonder if it’s possible to actually make him be a white-passing Indian or happened to be raised in parts of the culture. That could actually be really interesting. We technically still haven’t seen his parents so it could still happen.

I agree I have a love have relationship with this era like I said in a previous comment I don’t like the movies when they started changing I was eight back in 2017 and didn’t like how they made me feel stupid even though I love the concept of the movies. I love the dolls but hate the quality they feel cheap I have a ballerina doll from 2014 me and my twin we made the doll Ken out of spite and ruthlessly treated the doll horribly and even now the doll besides the hair is in good condition the leg snapped out of socket once but my grandma fixed it easy but I remember holding my cousins newer Barbie and it felt like it was made from cheap plastic that someone easily could snap in half same with the clothes they are cheaply made too and they sometimes all look like they are trying so hard to target girls I love the diversity but the don’t have good clothes for the dolls of a lot of body types and change then charge you 20$
If you like the new movies and dolls I’m happy for you and that you like it I’m sure their are good moments in the newer movies that I don’t remember

I loved your video and your so funny like totally my type of humour.I am a big fan of the old barbie movies(even though I never bought a barbie doll but never mind,I adored the movies) I started to see barbie movies change like you mentioned in 2015 and I was like ok and I kinda liked the puppy dog chase and the only like old barbie vlog I watched was the one that she talked about us like women often say sorry(and she made valid pointes).When dophine magic like first came out I like it and animation for me was good and story for me was ok but still it was missing the magic of old movies.I agree with you about Brookyln and Malibu dynamic and after the movie I didn't watch the series because they didn't draw me that much to watch.The chelsea and the skipper one I give up the first second of the movie like my god like no nope those movies don't exist in my life.For me the problem with the modern movies they lost the magic of the barbie that I grew up and adored(I know I have my nostalgia googles).I know like the generations change and some things have to change but the path they choose I am not a fan of but I will say that the new Barbie is not that bad like she is fun and like you said a good protagonist for child media but at the same time its getting boring like you say.Girl dont worry I am cringe like you and I love to watch children media(someties they do it better than hollywood).I am so sorry for this tangent but I wanted to share my thoughts and again I really love your take on the modern Barbie.

I grew up with 2009-2015 era barbie more than classic barbie so my last barbie movie which I thoroughly enjoyed was "Barbie Starlight Adventure".
I don't dislike Barbie and her sisters stories but I don't think I have anything interesting to learn/enjoy/anticipate from Barbie and her sisters starring in multiple adventures. I don't find newer barbie movies that interesting in terms of main character personal goals (in the movie), themes they are going for and the overall worldbuilding (fantasy/sci-fi/high school). The stakes are based more in reality and feels like it leans more towards 6-9 years old and their life problems. To be fair, to me, they look too similar in terms of storytelling structure so I stay away from them and refrain from getting too negative about them online. I believe Barbie Dreamhouse Adventures was decent, from what I saw. However, it's not compelling enough for me to watch all episodes. Since classic barbies have that fantasy element in them (ballet, christmas, barbie twist to old fairytales), they were still very enjoyable to me when I first saw them in comparison to post 2015 barbie movies. Thus I appreciate the older classical barbies more despite not growing up with them.
The last movie which kinda interested me was that video game one. It was cool in terms of worldbuilding but I "suddenly" felt it was written with almost invincible main characters and was too far away from my own taste and understanding of current childhood/teen interests. That movie made me realize that maybe, I have simply grown out of Barbie and am no longer going to enjoy anything they might put out.
I just listen to Barbie music though. It makes me feel very happy. And vlogs! I have watched some of them when they first came out and it felt like a very smart move by company. That time when barbie lost her mind and desperately tried to save her "relationship confession" was hilarious.
