Bought a 1998 Legacy for my son's first car.. Test drove and it worked fine. Got it home and the speedometer didn't work. This was exactly the problem. Applied your fix and it worked perfectly. Dude, you just saved me hundreds of dollars! Much Gratitude.
THANK YOU. I've never done any work on my own car before, and I was able to do this. It took me about 45 minutes, and most of that time was spent jiggling the instrument cluster to get it out from behind the steering wheel. And it WORKED, at least in the immediate.
just did exactly this and took my 99 legacy on a test drive and so far so good. anyone watching this defintley give this a shot before even bringing it to a mechanic
2006 Forester with this problem, at first speedometer started swinging wildly then stuck on either 34mph or 72mph, after stopping and restarting it would go away. Seemed ok through the winter until crack in engine coil and gasket leak at 115k+ in spring. Then speedometer went to zero, stayed there. Tachometer also acts up, but infrequently.
I am just starting to have the same problem in a manual 98 forester. The engine light comes on as well when the speedo doesn't work. I noticed after you did the fix the check engine light still is on does it go off, any tips
Curious? Noticing that while you've got the speedometer to work, it appears the the "check engine" light is still on----my problem with this is that in a smog check, if the check engine light is on, that's a flat fail as far as I know. I've heard you can erase the codes and take the smog test, hope it doesn't pop back up, but . . . I have the dead speedo/odomoter and have had the codes read and they point to the speedo as the fail, so I hope the check engine would go away with this fix.
have a 05 Forester, speedometer stopped working but the digital odometer still works. No Check Engine Light on, are the gears in the speedometer striped? when I turn on the car the speedometer needle does move from the bottom of the gauge to 0mph, but the needle does not move once the car is going.
My 2008 Subaru's speedometer and odometer are not working. I washed the front floors yesterday and vacuumed the water with a dry vac. Could there be a connection? When I start the engine the odometer reads 0 but as soon as I start to move, :ER 5P appears in the odometer display
I also have this problem but my tach doesn't match up either. The speedo is off and tach. I'm gonna try the fix and see if it helps. Thanks for the heads up
I have a 1998 Outback and it was doing the same thing as car and everyone once in a while it would cut off while driving it ending up being that the rpm was running to low so we had to turn the RPM up
This doesn't always work. You see the one contact screw that does not have a trace leading to it? This is the same as the blue connector that the vss signal feeds into. Run a wire to that contact instead. It's a lot more solid connection.
Did this fix, but it only worked for a few minutes. I ended up resoldering one tiny spot on circuit board. Used this video and a forum to take out speedo head and just add a dab of solder to the bad joint. Has been working for 4 months. Somehow this managed to fix my rev limiter but not my speedometer. Prior to doing this fix my RPMs were limited to 4500 RPM. Any ideas of why this happened not that I'm complaining? :)
I have a 06 forester. today I noticed that the speedometer had stopped working while driving the car. every thing else is working. will this work for my fix?

So far, so good, your little trick works!
Incredible, the subaru dealer was ready to charge me 500$ to replace the whole cluster!!!
Thanks!

Thanks the fix worked GREAT
Important to know!.... If the car cuts out at 4200 rpm , it is the speed sensor issue, not speedometer. If
I have this same exact problem, code is P1540,so replace the speed sensor and it will fix it?Just one sensor or is there more than one?
I'm having the same issue on an 05 sti. Everything works but the speedometer

What about when the speed isn't accurate? The speedocable looks fine on both ends and I lubricated it

Good video, Thanks.

The solder kept working until the engine crapped out.... best of luck to you :)
