- Doing yoga recently, I heard this song by Spacehog playing and really got into it. I came home humming it, asking my hubby why it sounded so familiar, not realizing that he had been playing it for our newborn thinking I'd never analyze "In The Meantime." WRONG! Here we go!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Spacehog for the first time, performing "In The Meantime”.

Really loved this song when it dropped.
I think it has withstood the test of time.
I love this song and I love that you are doing this. This brings me joy.
I always thought he sounded like a cross between Lane Stayley and Axl Rose.
OMG. such nostalgia fuel right here. this had to have been my all time favorite song in the late 90's. The alternative radio station where i lived just would. not. stop. playing. it. which got no complaints from me. I miss the 90's
Every once in a while a band writes a Perfect Song. This is one of those songs.
Absolutely one of THE BEST songs of the 90’s. Such a classic. Thanks for doing this one❤
That intro bass rif on a Rickenbacker is legendary.
It almost sounds like a fretless bass, imo.... Very nice.
OMG! I'm so happy, I never thought you would get around to this one. It's in my top ten favorites.
The coolest opening to any song. Such a groove
"Telephone and Rubberband"
by Penguin Cafe Orchestra
“Hot for Teacher” Van Halen
😉
When Doves Cry- Prince
The late '90s one hit wonder "Got You Where I Want You" by The Flys makes me so happy, I usually giggle when I hear it start. The '90s had some great happy songs like this!!
The Flys - Got You Where I Want You gives off the same vibe to me. Dandy Warhols - Bohemian Like You does too
This is one of my absolute favorite songs. I remember finding it decades ago and it has stuck with me ever since. It’s guaranteed to fill me with feelings, to the point where I was even tearing up singing along to it as you did your review.
This song is so fun on bass...not easy! I have no idea how he sings and plays this.
And his bass tone is just sooo good.
Honestly the bass is such an unsung hero of this song. It's what I focus on whenever I hear this song
@tonyzahn8911 Ric! Listen to Chris Squire (Yes) if you haven't. Also, early Geddy (inspired by Squire). All will be clear.
One of my favorites to play on bass
According to Royston, the bass you're hearing is John Lennon's Rickenbacker 4001 bass, loaned to him by Sean Lennon.
The end of this always feels like it would flow beautifully into Our Lady Peace's Clumsy.
oooohh would love to hear Elizabeth's take on OLP!
Honestly, I'd love to see a deep dive on Canadian rock from Elizabeth. Our Lady Peace, Crash Test Dummies, The Odds, The Tea Party. Then some newer stuff like Metric and Billy Talent (Oh my gods I want to know what she thinks of Ben's voice because he's pretty wild).
@@chadcharest9891love to see this happen, I’d like to add Collective Soul and The Spin Doctors to that list.
@@chadcharest9891the Teaparty!!!❤❤❤
@@chadcharest9891Wild Strawberries...?
This is the song when I think of the 90s. Still bangs nearly 30 years later.
Sowing the Seeds of Love by Tears for Fears gives me same vibe! I've loved both of these songs since I first heard them.
Sowing the Seeds of Love makes me emotional when I hear it.
I've loved this song since I first heard it back when it came out. It will never leave your head. I can listen to it over and over and just be happy the whole time
One of my favorite songs to play with my cover band. As a bassist it’s amazing that he was laying down some serious notes while singing live.
I was in middle school when this came out and it was part of this weird and fantastic chunk of the nineties when bands had weird-ass names, and 1-2 super catchy hooks you heard everywhere. Loved it!
I love this song, it takes me back to younger days! I was amazed to hear it in the last Guardians of the galaxy film, never thought you do a video on it, so super happy, thank you
I love the bass line in this one.
I love this song. I live the reverse guitar. And that... busy signal at the beginning. Love it.
At last. A song we agree on. The perfect song for the 90's.
You Get What You Give from New Radicals gives me the same happy vibes as In The Meantime, both are always on my playlists.
This. Would love to see a You Get What You Give reaction
A great pop album overall. New Radicals came, conquered and vanished.
@@VoltLives Oh, good call! Yeah, that’s definitely on my list.
I'd like to see that analysis
Gregg Alexander an absolute genius composer of a ton of great songs including..the Michelle Branch/ Santana monster The Game of Love..New Radicals had one album..the cute little girl niece? that Archie adores from All in the family forward ,Danielle Brisbois, is in the band too...She will like Steal my Sunshine by Len and There She Goes by The La's..I think Drunk Driver/Killer Whale by Car Seat Headrest.tho kinda new.has got killer vocals and music and lyrics and video and...its a downer tho with upbeat music..
This. You Give What You Get. Laid. Virtual Insanity. Flagpole Sitta. Banditos. Mid/late 90s gave some great one hit wonders.
Laid, Flagpole Sitta, and Banditos? Did we just become best friends?!?!?
Upvote flagpole sitta,
Dude, that whole album of LAID was incredible. Just because the radio didn't play more than the American Pie song, don't sleep on James!
17 years ago I uploaded a terrible copy of the Banditos music video to my channel and for 15 years it was the only place you could find the video online!
Better than Ezra
I wish more people knew the rest of Spacehog's catalog. This whole album is great, but the album I really love is their second album, The Chinese Album. It went pretty much unnoticed.
So stoked for this! I swear I suggested this in a live premier like a year and a half ago, so really excited to see your reaction!
Ahhh this song Is on my perpetual playlist of ‘feel good’ songs.
My band Spacehopper did some gigs with Them in Glasgow in the 1990s , they were lovely guys
Mty favorite Hopper is the twin!
Are you Pure Essence Spacehopper that I was just listening to on Spotify?
Spacehog was such an under rated band. They were one of my faves back in the day and I still listen to them on occasion. "Mungo City" was always a favourite too.
Alanis Morrisette! Grammy performance of Uninvited!
My favorite Alanis song. A must.
Love myself some Spacehog. One of my favorite songs of all time
I would love to see you do 4 Non Blondes “What’s Up” 😊
Excellent choice!
YES!
100% this. Heard it on the radio the other day and my first thought was of this channel...
Yeah, she goes BIG with those vocals.
This whole album is amazing. Saw them play live over 20yrs ago and they were just as fun live.
I love this song! Was not expecting this to show up on your channel!
Afternoons and Coffeespoons by Crash Test Dummies is a song that brings me pure delight when it’s played.
Goes well with Sliverchair's "Tomorrow"
I'd love to hear Elizabeth's take on Silverchair! Especially since Daniel Johns is the only grunge adjacent singer I know of who is documented as consistently doing vocal warm ups and really seemed to care that he sounded good from a more classical standpoint
Do a song from each album including when he did stuff with paul Mac and talk about how a 14 year old voice matures.
One of my all time favourite basslines. I still listen to this song on the regular.
YAY! This is one of my FAVORITE songs ever! It always makes me happy when I hear it.
Its such a bop, but with this bluesy dirty bass line. Ugh I love this song.
I cannot wait for you to start the SilverChair journey, starting with Tomorrow (i have a wish list of their songs and the order to do them in).
I fell in love with this song the first time I heard it on a late night PBS show called On Tour in the 90s.
The Distance by CAKE, If You Could Only See by Tonic, and You Get What You Give by New Radicals would be great choices in this vein.
I love the bass line on this song. Classic.
I was also thinking of recommending Tonic. Tal Bachman - She's so High also has a lot of upbeat high singing. Harvey Danger - Flagpole Sitta is another great one.
Blind Melon - No Rain
Cornershop - Brimful of Asha
For CAKE, I'd go with "Sheep go to Heaven" or "Short Skirt Long Jacket" myself...though they are one of my absolute favorite bands so anything works.
@@truefreak Frank Sinatra or bust.
I’d love to see reactions to any Cake or Garbage!
There is definitely a "oneness" to this song, for sure. It's all about that mixture of existentialism and the desire to connect and find meaning. In the meantime, let's just be there for each other. We love the all of you.
Great song with beautiful lyrics and a positive message. I love it.
This song has made me smile since the first time I heard it, forever ago! It's utterly joyous. 😊
The blank stares were an artifact of 90s rock videos; there are two things happening, 1) people too cool to admit they enjoy the music, 2) a band that's going to give it their all regardless of the crowd reaction. 90s ironic detachment. FWIW, this was possibly (perhaps likely) a product of whatever director was assigned to them by the record label, rather than the band's idea.
Yeah but that was more like a bri-ish thing. The 90's in my region was a bit more expressive.
I think the audience members are exhibiting the kind of cool detachment that Royston Langdon is trying to break through with the lyrics, and as you said in point 2, in the end the band just has to be themselves and not let it affect them. The hourglass toss at the end does seem to get a reaction, which is how it often goes - just when time is up!
"In the Meantime", for me, is the template of 90s alternative rock: Catchy hooks, guitars, and catchy lyrics.
I loooove this song. Everyone has been chipping in with their 90s favorites. The one song I go back to the most is Three Strange Days by School of Fish. I think I’ll listen to it again now.
THANK. YOU.
We're digging into some 90s hidden gems, ladies and gents, and maybe this one of the best ones amongst those.
Love this song to bits! My go to karaoke song.
Thanks again, Elizabeth. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Elizabeth, please consider making a video on Florence + the machine. She is a spectacular live performer and I’d love to hear your take on her live performance
Either a BBC Ali palace one or the Charity gig she did from the Albert hall... for best effect.
Note as of this morning Bev Bevan of ELO announced they will cease performing Next year ... The final concert will be in Hyde Park London in the summer.
Tandy the original key board player and composer of many of their earlier works died earlier this year..
Interesting choice! Saw these guys live many years ago. They put on a great show.
Great bass line, too!
Loved the pillow metaphor.
The epitome of lightning in a bottle. I think there's only one other song on the album I actually liked, but this song I could listen to every day and it was on many a mix tape back in the day (Spotify playlist for the modern era). I kind of have a soft spot for anyone who can play a killer bass lick and sing at the same time anyway. Perhaps I was destined to love this song, and indeed I still do. Great pick!
Absolutely one of my favorite songs...ever!!
This is one of those songs that just screams that it's from the 90s. I'm instantly transported back there when I hear it.
When I play Guitar Hero, I like to sing along with the songs I know, and "In The Meantime" is one of the most joyous songs for that.
I am so happy you reacted to this (analyzed). I was quite surprised to see Spacehog on my feed with you beside it!❤ I love blasting this with the windows down, singing and feeling free! And I don't know know all the lyrics either.
I haven't heard this song in forever. Glad you dove into it!!! Reminds me of being a teen in the 90s.
This is probably my favorite era in music. Mid-90’s, coming out of the moody/angry grunge scene, alternative suddenly flipped the other direction into fun, happy music. Another I’d recommend is Refreshments “Banditos”.
Yeah, that seems fair.
Both Refreshments albums have a few gems on them.
@@paulschirf9259 This, and the band that followed their break up Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers have a lot of great songs as well. My Heart is A UFO is great fun.
@@piltdownfilms Agreed.
this was such a great song, never thought you would review it.
“Do You Realize” by The Laming Lips…. a must listen and in the similar vein as this song.
Damn typo… supposed to be Flaming Lips
Real Big Fish covering Take On Me gives me the dame happy vibes everytime I hear it.
No rain, blind melon (the bee suit girl song)...rip Shannon hoon
Yes please!
I was about 11 when this came out. Summer holidays, life was simple, just playing football, painting warhammer with my friend and just playing outside until I was called home. I was lucky to have that childhood.
*LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS SONG!!!* Thank you, Elizabeth!
I like the telephone tone on guitar this is so much that its an old busy signal
This song has been in my rotation for almost 30 years.
I Come From The Water - Toadies
or
Inside Out - Eve 6
Also as many have stated, I'm so happy you did this song as it's so near and dear to my 90's high school heart! Which consequently is the era you need 1st hand experience of to get the video 😅
Toadies! To analyze vocals I'd go with Possum Kingdom, though.
This song, Matthew Sweet - Sick of Myself, & Superdrag- Sucked Out were my power pop faves from this era.
One of the best bass lines of the 90's
Seeing anyone give a spotlight to Space Hog is a win for me. I was in college when this song came out, and it still stands up in all its pseudo-Bowie goodness.
The fact that you just dropped a Lemon Jelly reference makes my entire day. Absolutely fantastic atmospheric/electronic band, that not a lot of people know about. Kudos to you!
Agree 100%. To me it seems to combine happiness with a subtle sense of longing and just hooks you in. Another tune that makes you feel happy - and is nothing like "In the Meantime", is the 1989 Rod Steward + Ronald Isley version of "This Old Heart of Mine" (not the original from the 60s). The tone of the music and the way their voices play off of each other is amazing, so happy and upbeat.
I never thought of this as a happy song. It is very melancholy. Apparently, it samples the song Telephone and Rubber Band by the Penguin Cafe Orchestra.
If you want to listen to similar bands that had more big hits try the Gin Blossoms or Matchbox 20 or the Wallflowers. Some of my favorite alternative rock bands.
That’s the track… I love that piece of music 😀
the singer is so happy because that bass line is so damn fun to play 😹
One of the first songs I taught myself. I still haven' completely mastered it, but it really is a load of fun.
I'm amazed you are doing this. I'm amazed Spacehog is still around. I saw them with my wife way back when they were on their way up, in a tiny little dive bar in Boston.
Excellent choice! The persistent busy signal in the song was a clever hook.
Oh man, I’ve always loved this song ❤ Takes me back to listening to KNAC radio in ATX throughout the 90s.
90s just had so many golden songs. Even ones I didn’t like at the time, I’ve come to appreciate more. But this has always been an earworm for me. I’d like to hear you cover 4 Non Blondes, and Linda Perry (the lead singer and future producer) is an amazing story. Also check out Len “Steal My Sunshine” which pops up in movies pretty often.
Delighted to see some 90s Indie-Pop get some well deserved love on this channel. One of the last great music eras before music industry started getting calcified in the 2000.
I love that you named your son Mycroft. Hopefully he'll be super smart when he grows up!
"I've been getting into David Bowie lately" Arc please!!!
If you like this, I highly recommend Laid by James! So much falsetto fun!
First 3 off the top of my head.... Meant to Live - Switch Foot Sweetness - Jimmy Eat World, Sleigh Bells - Infinity Guitars
Great 90s anthem! If you're going to dive into alt-rock you need to listen to literally anything by the Pixies for some quite surreal yowling and screaming.
Wait, what? Elizabeth has never reacted to The Pixies? This is a must for The Charismatic Voice!!!
@@brettsiegel6934 I know, right? Voices don't get much more charismatic than Black Francis. I think the song 'Hey' would be a good place to start :)
Pigs in spaaaaaace 😂
Yeeessss!!!! ❤️❤️🤘🤘
No one's going to get this
@@mrnoahlottI do
My favorite was Link Hogthrob!! 😂 also Dr Julius Strangepork. 🤘
@mrnoahlott you'd be surprised how many of us do...
OMG, I love this song, it has so many things going for it. That bridge is soooooo Bowie. And that frikkin baseline is pure genius.
When it came out, it was all over any kind of 'alternative' radio, and then they seemed to disappear. Then recently it was practically the them for the last "Guardians of the Galaxy" movie, and a whole bunch of new people were introduced to it. It's lost nothing over time.
I am going take drive and blast this wide open whilie singing along . and smiling
Thanks for reminding me how enjoyable this song is ..
I saw Space Hog at the House of Blues New Orleans.. and could see his tonsils from the cheap seats
those are some nutty basslines to be playing while also singing.
When this song came out, it was a breath of fresh air from the sludgy, muddled mixing of grunge music in the early 1990s. Then along came bands like Spacehog and Urge Overkill, with highly polished grunge that spoke more of late 1970s rock but with mid 1990s thrift store swagger. Thanks for this reaction!
Royston has just as exaggerated mouth openings live as well. Great bass player too! I was surprised in the opening that you keyed in on the synth instead of that delicious and prominent bass. Glad you wanted to dive i to this great 90’s gem!
This is where penguin cafe orchestra needs a special mention. Telephone and rubber band is such a cool piece on its own
that noise in the beginning also reminds me of Telephone Line by ELO
Definitely old phone noises.
It's a sample from Telephone and Rubber Band by the excellent Penguin Cafe Orchestra.
@@Womberto Came here to say this. What a great project they are. I
IMHO, the song and video are talking about "the meantime" as like a waiting room where we are waiting for our next big thing, but in the meantime, we are all going through the same waititng and we all have that in common. I could be way off, but that's the feeling I get. These people are from all different walks of life and culture, but they are all "in the meantime".
This is a commercial break music bed for so many sports, but the song is so good. Here's another one Lucious Jackson "Naked Eye". It will be on a play list.
The song they sample for the telephone sounds, "Telephone and Rubber Band" by Penguin Cafe Orchestra is worth a listen too. No vocals, so probably just on your own time, but it's a delightful little piece
Most of their stuff is fantastic. Check out "Broadcasting From Home", it's so good all the way through.
He’s a truly fantastic bass player also… and sings lead so beautifully at the same time
Alright by Supergrass is pure unfiltered joy in a sub 3 minute package.
The telephone intro is sampled from the excellent Penguin Cafe Orchestra. It's a dialling tone and an engaged tone played together. - ruclips.net/video/ZygIVDql8Bk/видео.html
Knew it! Was scrolling through the comments to look for someone mentioning it.
ah, yes. The two beeps together are the busy-tone, and I always thought the through tone was a synth. Not British here, the dial tone where I live is different
Also VERY reminiscent of Pink Floyd, 'The Wall' sampling the dial-tone.
@@katzentratschen Yup, same here.
one of my all time guilty pleasure songs of all time, makes me smile every time. loved it since it was released.
"September" by Earth, Wind, and Fire is one of my favorite "happy" songs.
Funnily enough ive recommended this one to you a few times, its a "relatively" unknown group from that era. but its an absolute banger.
Wow, I haven't heard this one in years! More songs that catch YOUR ear, please!
