    ZOYSIA
    Emerald ....Available on Amazon in 1/8 lb bags. Honestly this is pricy to do an entire yard considering a 1 lb/1000 seed rate. This link is the most reasonable price I have found.

    St. AUGUSTINE
    Raleigh....check your local sod farms for this variety. Sorry could not find plugs for the mail however, it's sketchy to get grass that way.

    • @GregPhillips.22
      @GregPhillips.22  5 месяцев назад +1

      It's good have used it before. Was going to mention it in the video. Barenbrug puts a coating on their seed. I have found it does not make as big of difference in germination as marketed. Not that it's bad, I have not seen that much difference in germination. Also, the amount of seed in the bag is less per pound because of the seed coating taking up room in the bag. I would rather have the more seed than the coating.

    Greg, I love your topics and learn so much. I have common Bermuda here in central Oklahoma. I have three huge Elm trees. I never could get Bermuda to grow under them. Tall Fescue is the only thing I have had any success with under those trees. I just have to seed every Fall due to the heat stress. I noticed they have rizohm type fescue that spreads now. Have you ever tried any?

    • @GregPhillips.22
      @GregPhillips.22  5 месяцев назад

      I have tried that one with mixed results. Think the only seed producer/vendor that offers it is barenbrug seed. They want to put the seed coat on it too which I am not all that crazy about either. Raptor III tall fescue scored highest in drought tolerance the south east. There were no trials in your neck of the woods. Quick check I have not found any Raptor III online. Daybreak from Twin City Seed out of Minnesota has it. It is a very high quality tall fescue. link is below. Can't say it would make it through a Texas summer but it is a excellent quality tall fescue. One thing you may consider is plugging St. Augustine in your shade areas and allowing it to spread. It is the most shade tolerant warm season grass. If there is a local sod farm that offers plugs could go that route and let is spread over time.

      It should be fine. It is how it's stored is important. If it's somewhere it has been frozen or in a hot warehouse or high moisture you start loosing germination rate. Generally it will germinate but it does decrease over time.

      Can you estimate how much shade your back yard gets? Bermuda would be ideal but there is the shade issue. You could overseed zoysia in the front yard. I like a zoysia/bermuda because the leaf texture are much closer than Bermuda/St. Augustine. St. Augustine would handle the shade though.

    Greg, I have all Bermuda(common) in my front and back lawn. Where am I? South eastern Washington. I’m green from Aprilish to Octoberish. May through September is prime. It’s HOT here. A near desert. But I want to overseed with rye in my backyard (as it has more shade it tends to come out of dormancy and go in to dormancy 2-3 weeks before my front. But you have me interested in Yukon now. If I don’t like how the rye is this fall, maybe I could try Yukon?

    • @GregPhillips.22
      @GregPhillips.22  5 месяцев назад

      Could ..yukon has a finer leaf texture than common. The thing is , if you don't have at least 7 hrs of sun in your back yard Bermuda will not do well. I was hoping mine would creep
      more under my maple tree. No luck. It's why I am finally giving up and seeding high quality fescue under it this September. The Yukon would give you a finer leaf texture in your sunny yard. Could scalp the 💩out of your common in mid May, aerify then seed and drag your Yukon into your common. Keep it moist for 10 to 14 days then be aggressive with your nitrogen aps until mid July. Trick is if you are in a dry area is keeping the seed moist.

    • @GregPhillips.22
      @GregPhillips.22  5 месяцев назад

      Tenacity is officially labeled to "suppress" Bermuda. I know it whitens it up..if it is stressed after application, dormancy, drought etc. may help thst along.
      There is also Fusilade II but it is pricy but will kill Bermuda both common and hybrid.
      Tenacity if you apply it in the fall prior to dormancy that will help if you want to go that route. In addition to price ..the label on fusillade II says not to apply to tall fescue during the summer. That scares me a little. The only use I am aware of Fusilade II is a superintendent friend of mine used to trim bunkers. He was happy with the results. At least that gives you a couple of options.

    • @GregPhillips.22
      @GregPhillips.22  5 месяцев назад +1

      It is an option and if it works for you go for it. For winter overseeding it's personal preference. There are several herbicides that will take rye out of Bermuda. Celsius being one of them. It's good application in mid spring. Just to clean up anything that had germinated over winter/spring. Then hit it with summer pre emergent. Keeps ya clean mean and weed free until fall.

    Hey just found your channel. Sorry if you covered it in another vehicle but why did you pick Bermuda for your front lawn vs Zoysia? I live in the transition zone in Kansas and have considered switching to bermuda or zoysia.

    • @GregPhillips.22
      @GregPhillips.22  4 месяца назад

      I was in NC and had managed Bermuda on golf courses there. Zoysia is a very good species but it creeps "fills in" very slowly. That makes it less forgiving than Bermuda. One thing I would prefer to be better with my Yukon Bermuda is color. Some of it may be tall fescue yards on either side of me but it is a little light in color. It's why I did the iron video. Was hoping just adding iron wound green me up but it didn't. Higher nitrogen just makes it grow faster and I am mowing 2X/ week. You can seed emerald zoysia and likely get decent cover on a new lawn but Bermuda will fill in a lot faster. If you are in the upper transition zone. Looking at Yukon or Rivera Bermuda. Unlikely sod farms in your area grow warm season grasses so you are stuck with seeding which ever direction you go. Will say this summer my Bermuda paid off. Had the best yard in the neighborhood without hardly doing a thing but mowing. Hand watered a couple of drought stress areas but that was it. Bermuda is a tank in heat and drought in the transition zone.

    • @adamsimone141
      @adamsimone141 4 месяца назад

      @@GregPhillips.22 Makes sense. Not sure why but the thought of Bermuda scares me because it just takes over everything. I'd be scared it would take over the entire neighborhood and piss all the neighbors off. Zoysia probably the same it just takes longer. I'm sure both are equally as tough to get rid of if you decide you don't want it.
      Here in the Topeka/KC area all of the golf courses have Zoysia fairways but I do know Arrowhead Stadium (Chiefs) uses bermuda.

      It is basically like springing. You can take those put them in the soil surface. They need pushed in a little just to lock them into the soil a bit. If you look at that the sprigging machine it puts the sprigs down then runs over them with a disc. Kinda like a thick pizza cutter. Just to push them into the ground a little. On a small area take a flat shovel and push them down a little should be the same. Not hard enough to cut the stolon just enough to push it in the soil. Got to keep them moist for an about a week or two until they take root.
