BY THE GODS! I never knew about the Layer Transparency lock... thats what I was looking for all my life. This changes EVERYTHING. I watched a lot of tutorials and guides, but this is the one that actually explained everything the way it was needed for me to move on to the next level (I'm an amateur).
@@HimanshuSingh-sf3lcI have a problem, when I use the clipping mask or lock transparency, the color painted gets way lighter than the color chosen. Please help me with this.
@@VinhNguyen-wr1yd there should be no change in color if you're using transparency lock, if you're using a brush to color with transparency lock enabled maybe check the top where it shows brush settings and see if the blending mode is set to normal. With clipping masks, again, the only way with the colors being different than the one selected is blending modes and opacity issues.
@@HimanshuSingh-sf3lc Thanks for the quick reply! It seems that there is a problem with one of my current drawings. I don't know why this occur but when I duplicate the file and color it the same way again, the color isn't lighten.

i've been doing digital art/painting for years but i've always done it in a way that is much more time consuming than this. you taught me some really important stuff. this will make doing coloring a lot easier. thank you!
Cool video. A suggestion from one of my favourite artists is to learn the keyboard shortcuts for both the tools and actions. The more you practice, you'll develop speed and clicking on the tool icons slow you down. Photoshop essentials: (B)rush, (E)raser, (P)en, (L)asso, colour sample (I), Colour fill (Alt+backspace). For the tool buttons that have multiple functions, you'll still have to click and hold on the tool icon to bring up the icon sub-menu though.
不择小树 because It toom him 5 minutes to start answering the question that's the title of the video. Not hating, but that's a logical accident. Also people are searching for a quick answer so they probably dont stick to a video this long when there are many other shorter versions
Funny thing about me: graduated top in visual arts, extensive knowledge of drawing, high understanding of lights and shadows..... But somehow I was always afraid of Photoshop painting. I paint hand to canvas all the time, but not being able to have that actual control is difficult for me. I would draw beautiful line drawings and illustrations, but be at a loss when it came to color, since the black outline made the drawing sharp, and using colors would mute it. But now, I have the confidence to take all the line drawings I've done since 2012 and turn them into Photoshop masterpieces. Thank you so much!

Hello, This was so far one of the best tutorials on how to cell shade , i have seen lots of tutorials on you tube regarding this subject but yours just answered so many questions that i had in mind!!!! just WOW! Cristian Capasso you are just awesome dude!
thank you so much for this. i've been drawing for years now (not getting better due to long breaks inbetween.. yeah i'm one of those people) and i always refused to let others teach me tricks, because i was like "ehh i can discover everything by myself" .. haha wrong! i mean i DID discorver a lot of things and got to know photoshop in minor detail all due to trial and error as i'd like to call it.. but my drawings always took too long or i cancelled them during process because my motivation left me. i'm literally coloring my drawings like kids do in coloring books. i guess i will never do that again thanks to you. :>
Thank you, I just finished my line art and have 1 and a half more day to finish the coloring before submitting my assignment. I hope I can learn this fast
Thank you so much. As an aspiring artist this is an amazing help, also sharing on how to use certain tools in photoshop is a gamechanger! Thanks for being a warm welcome and support to the community!
Not quite as quick and easy as the thumbnail suggests. Transparency lock is nice, but I prefer using solid color layers and applying masks to groups so that I can keep my shading in a different layer than my base color. Sometimes, I'll also have a group for the colors of the entire character just to make sure I don't accidentally have any transparent pixels on my character. Separating the lines from the white background using the channels window is smart. I usually use a layer effect in Krita that's called "color to alpha", which turns a selected color into transparency. The higher the color value, the lower the opacity. When selecting white, it only leaves the black lines. I really liked the part in the beginning of the process where you drew guidelines for the shapes to determine where the light will be and where the shadows will be. I feel like I should try using guidelines for shading and not only for drawing. This is a good tip.
this has been the most helpful video I have ever seen me pertaining to digital art thank you so much for this wealth of information and then I can add it to my art pieces thank you. In addition, I also subscribe and left a like. this video truly deserves it.
You earned a sub... This thing was the only problem keeping me from creating amazing stuff. I always wondered how people color without going out of boundaries... Thanks a lot.
Thank you for this tutorial! This helps me a lot since I've been drawing and coloring for years but I've begun to do my artwork digitally! Very helpful!
You had no idea how helpful this was, I been looking for the way to shade my work but what you show me was something I will never thought of knowing what photoshop could actually do the lock transparency is going be so damn useful for me. It was a bitch to color and shade with out special tools.
Cristian: This was hands down the best cell shading technique video I have seen. The pacing was spot on and your suggestions were all very constructive and helpful. Thanks for your time. I look forward to other videos by you.
Thank you. This helped a lot. Cell shading will make working with color so much faster and a real good tool for getting an idea of what colors work best.
I've watched a lot of videos like this, but not many have actually evolved my art. Like many others, I always wondered what people did to not color outside of their layer, but it's simple as locking the transparency... Thank you for making this, I feel like I for once took something away from the video I watched :)
ahh, thanks for the tips! Im a photoshop beginner and lock transparency will be a favourite of mine. Glad I know about this technique sooner rather than later!
Thank you so much!! I am beginner in digital coloring and I know much on doing line arts only. I still need to develop my skills in coloring, and this is a big help for me!

Tis looks great, I'm new to digital drawing and instead of using selction tools I use transparency and brushes. The main problem I have is inconsistency and most of the times when something ends up looking good it was by accident. I have to take on more to this methodical approach, looks great!
Thanks for new method of separating white background, I ussually put my Black and White lineart on top of all the layers in Multiply blending mode, that do the same, but sometimes it is necessary to get rid of those white colors to apply some nice photoshop styles to lines and your method helps like nothing else
I got a Huion H610 PRO V2 for under $90US. It's WAY bigger than the smallest wacom graphics board. It''s a great piece of hardware that's easy to set up and fairly straight forward. For my line art, I just clean up the scan, double click on the layer, click ok which will turn it into a new unlocked layer (layer 0), then turn layer to multiply. It will show all layers and colors, beneath the lineart layer but you only see the lineart itself by making the white background "invisible".
