    This is actually an impressive and surprisingly innovative machine. I feel like this is a genuine competitor to an iMac for more casual users. It looks beautiful, can be rotated, can run mobile apps, and is 1/2 the price. Would love to see future iterations of this product with more customizability. Maybe 27'' or 4k option with i5? I feel like not including stylus support could really take advantage of the stand as well. Excited to see where this line of products leads.

    I feel like this could be a perfect kitchen device. Watch youtube cooking videos, pull up recipes and turn the screen to see more of them at a time, pump out some tunes while you cook. Set a timer and play a quick game while you wait. If you could use this a a full on google smart display as well it would be perfect.

    This device is just fantastic, which is why I love the Google ecosystem so much.
    We don't have to restrict ourselves to a single company vision like Apple does.
    Having all of these manufacturers is a huge asset and brings a whole bunch of different ideas and visions. It's a victory for us users because in the end we have a lot of choices.

    Thanks for a great update review 👍
    For me, the major benefit of Chromebooks is value for money.
    Sadly many of the most interesting models you review can take an age to hit the shore over here (🇬🇧), and even when they don’t we seem to pay a big premium. Hope we can get i3 versions of the HP over here soon at a decent price🤞

      The situation is worse here. Decent specced machines are few and far between and cost more than they even do in the UK! I paid $100 more than the US price for the Lenovo Duet last year. It's coming down in price now that it's a year old!

    Thanks for the review, been checking daily since the first look! Waiting for it to hit the UK store (and price confirmation) as would make a great device for working from home on and general personal business! Run my whole company on an Acer 715 with a Pentium Gold and no hiccups. Would miss the number pad though.. Hopefully next time around there's 8GB RAM and a higher definition screen but the price will shoot up of course whereas this looks value versus a Chromebook and certainly a Chromebox and monitor etc. combo. Thanks again!

    Nice review, the unit is built to capture the imagination and I'll dare say reminds me of the iMac G4 (known as the Sunflower, or Lamp Mac and what I wanted it to be the next evolution of the iMac) Good screen size, resolution, and the added keyboard and mouse complement the value of the offering, I think what is my real-world application for the screen rotation is for contract editing/text editing and that is something I do every day.

    I had been waiting for a decent Chromebase/Chromebox and purchased the HP Chromebase based on this review by Chrome Unboxed. Previously, I was using the Acer Chromebox in my office. As with the Pixelbook GO (which I also purchased based on a Chrome Unboxed review), Robby's review is spot on. While I would have preferred and would be willing to pay more for an even higher quality AIO, the HP Chromebase is a terrific package at a decent price. I'm completely enjoying the AIO and would definitely purchase again and recommend. Great form factor, camera, speaker, microphone, and screen (although, would like a larger screen even more). I won't repeat what's stated in Robby's review, I'll just state again that his review is spot on.

    Looks great and all, but the price is too high for a low powered chromebook, i paid just over $650 for a 4750GE based tiny desktop and tilting screen that it slips into(this model isnt touch, but there is a touch version for an absurd $75 price premium)
    Yes this HP looks amazing, but the performance just isnt there. I would expect this to sell much better at around $450 for an i3, because, basically, this is an i3 laptop, with a larger screen and no battery. And have you checked the price of screens lately, there isnt much of a difference between 17, and 25 inches

  • @malcontent_1

    • @michaelcorcoran8768
      @michaelcorcoran8768 2 года назад

      @@hermanstokbrood Yeah although I think 4 gb and 64 gb is a weak baseline. I know you can add ram and storage, so that's nice. But 4 gbs of ram on a desktop in 2021 seems a little low. Microsoft is pulling this too with the Surface GO labtop base model.

    Man, if I buy a desktop computer this is high on the list. The only thing that keeps me from fully committing is that not very easy to customize a core i3 version of the device. They're either out of stock or unavailable at the HP website or there's something wrong with the interface. I did see one on eBay with 16 GB of ran and the core i3 for a reasonable price though.

      I think people are sleeping on Chromebooks. If you want a PC labtop with a premium build these days you get charged 2k! If you don't need Windows (ie don't game on steam). Not even stuff that is super speced out. Just a solid i7 labtop with premium build tends to be super expensive, even when they are not "gaming labtops." Meanwhile, you can get a premium build for a Chromebook for like sub $500 on sale. If you are not rendering 4k video, or a hard-core gamer, it seems like wasted money spending 3 or 4 times as much to run Windows vs Chrome OS. They also don't get slowed down by endless updates. I have to restart my surface pro 7 for an update seemingly everytime I use it

    Probably a bit late to comment but I just got a Black Friday Deal for this thing for around $400 - watched your video after that. I actually just looked at the specs and the design and thought that I can't go wrong with that. Chromebooks have been in use here for ages, we've been on Google Workspace ever since they were called "Google Apps for Business", so I knew what I was getting myself into. I fully agree with you and I was also overwhelmed by the display.
    I don't know if anything changed about the model ever since you had yours, but I don't have an issue with the volume rocker because there are actually keys on the keyboard to control volume. So the placement doesn't really concern me. Was that different on your device?

    Sadly it appears this didn’t sell well enough for HP to refine and iterate this particular product. As of Dec 2022, it’s listed as discontinued on the HP website, though the base model appears still available for purchase for the moment through retailers, though likely that won’t last long. Too bad.

  • @rdg7714

    I've watched this video about 10 times now. Why, you ask? Because I want it SO bad. I currently have the 2020 Acer 713 and love it, but there's just something about having a dedicated desktop. Sure, you can plug your chromebook or laptop up to an external display, but there's a special something about being able to just sit down at your desk and start plugging away instantly - no dongles or cables to fiddle with. With the sleek all in one design, no need for external speakers and the versatile display, this chromebase is just begging to be a perfect solution to a minimalist desk setup.

    • @michaelcorcoran8768
      @michaelcorcoran8768 2 года назад +1

      I feel the same way man everyday I think about buying this. I don't need it, currently my setup is a 34 in ultra wide that I hook up into surface pro, which technically has more processing power than this. I also have the Lenovo duet and the tab S7 which can do some desktop productivity. But I don't have a dedicated desktop computer and sometimes I think I should get one. I don't edit videos so the Mac mini, and obvious choice for a lot of people, seems a little boring to me.
      But it's still definitely something of a luxury. But it has added features like compatibility as a home hub, and assistant, conferencing machine, and it will be a monster in terms of scrolling. I am a little worried I'll buy it and in a few months a new version will come out with QHD or other improvements.
      I have to admit using a surface pro with an external monitor isn't super ideal, as it gets really hot and doesn't have good battery life. I do like the idea of something that's always on even though I would technically have less processing power.

    • @rdg7714
      @rdg7714 2 года назад

      @Michael Corcoran I use a surface laptop hooked up to a 24 inch monitor at my work office, so I understand your struggles 😆
      I used to use a surface pro at work, and I experienced the same issues with it getting too hot.
      I'm invested in the Google home ecosystem, so the added home hub and assistant features are a big selling point for me. I'll probably end up buying this desktop in a couple months!

QHD, OLED and 90Hz are the big developments in the next 3-6 months so I am expecting better. I would def think twice before buying this as you can buy a great monitor and a cheap Chrome device and have a better viewing experience?

    GREAT! Review! My Amex card is already starting to burn in my pocket! But to your point about phone shapes and functions: I 100000% agree. What is it going to take for someone to create a ‘round’ smartphone - like a compact/mirror? Imagine the old B&O MP3 player… now put it on the same design-timeline as the iPod went on to one day become an iphone. TA-DAH. You’d get a ‘round’ smartphone… tons of opportunities for innovating the inputs… opportunities to refine the overall device for portability, visibility…etc. Instead what do we have: Rectangles. One square that folds INTO a rectangle… and nothing else. It’s a shame to live in a world where the technology that allows us to build virtually ANY shape is met by the most mediocre demands.

This one seems like a step backwards and brings back restrictions (being tied to a desk) that we had left behind. It will be ideal for schools, libraries or anywhere that 'hot desking' takes place.

      Pixel book with the 4k screen probably. Maybe the Samsung with 4k screen but it has shit battery life. Other options are the Acer Spin 713 or the HP x360. Those are arguably the top 4 premium chromebook labtops. I am not as well versed on desktop models, outside of this one

    I don't like the stand-design very much and I don't get the touchscreen. It probably could bring the price even down further with no touch. I would like 8gb as standard with even AMD joining the party. I think it's nice the AIO gets more attention and ChromeOS in particular. This combination is something we are hopefully going to see more often.

    • @michaelcorcoran8768
      @michaelcorcoran8768 2 года назад

      To me the touch screen is the PRIMARY selling point. Touch screen monitors are super expensive. And I hate using any modern device without a touch screen. After all these years of gesture navigations and touchscreens as are primary computing methods on our most used devices, that is the key feature here. Without a touch screen I would not even consider buying it. Its the biggest reason to choose this over a Mac, which has stubbornly refused to implement touch (to justify selling everyone an extra ipad or 2)

      @@michaelcorcoran8768 For a laptop I get your argument. But I don't see it for a desktop. The screen is simply to far away to be convenient for input IMO. The mouse as an input-device is still irreplaceable if you ask me.

    7:42 $500 for a Pentium Gold? And a 1080p screen? How can you say this is a fair price? This seems ridiculously overpriced for the specs you're getting

    • @michaelcorcoran8768
      @michaelcorcoran8768 2 года назад +1

      It's only $100 more to get a core i3 and you can add RAM and storage or replace the existing RAM and storage because it's totally modular. I think it's reasonable given that it's a touch screen maybe even quietly affordable. But I do think 4 GB of RAM is kind of silly. Thankfully you can upgrade it yourself at any time
