Well, considering this is an actual military base, and if there was ever an incident where they needed to take immediate action ,having the horses roped off wouldn't make much sense, would it? And of course, some of the horses, being living beings with feelings and temperaments, occasionally decide they have had enough and attempt to head back to the stables sometimes quite quickly. If it's roped off, then both human and horse troopers would, in fact, be harmed quite badly, don't you think?

Most people were very gentle and respectful of the horses (with the obvious exception). I wonder if it's wise though to let people get so close especially with tensions as they are in some of the cities at the moment - someone might want to make a name for themselves.
I'm afraid it is and unfortunately considered as Touristic Attraction because of the Horse Guards with their shiny Cuirrassiers along with their horses trained soldiers.
The guard stamps his foot when approaching the horse, this is to indicate to the horse to stand still! Honestly, I have a horse, when I stamp my foot firmly on the floor, the horse is trained to stop and stand still. A horse is very sensitive to vibrations with its hoof, its a survival instinct as when the heard moves it will know there is approaching danger. Horses are a lot smarter than people credit them; they use smell, taste, touch, sounds, vibrations as main sensory inputs.
I think they should have a police man or woman stand near the guard at all time to ensure that people behave they can change everytime the Guard changes so they are not standing for too lon
Isn't it a shame that lots of UK visitors say thank you to the Guardsmen yet most foreign visitors stand in the way after their photographs and ignore the guard and horse.
It's really strange seeing full beards on British soldiers. For the whole of my life and as far back as WW1 British soldiers had to either be clean shaven or wear a moustache. The last time I saw bearded British soldiers was in photographs from the 1800s. Those Victorian Guardsmen were rocking some massive beardage.
I'm glad you mentioned so decided to google it... The rule change, which applies across the army, was approved by the king earlier this year. Prior to that, facial hair was only allowed for religious, medical or roles specific reasons. ~ Personally, I prefer clean shaven or wearing a moustache.
I can't believe how the tourists insist on pawing at the horsex. It's incredible. No respect vor the Kings horse and guards 😮 And it seems to be getting worse. Time to change the boards I think 👏
Ok my imagination is getting the best of me….. I just witnessed a guard using his hand against a man who would not move out of his way as he, the Guard, approached the horse. Guards can do what they need to do. What if that tourist got annoyed enough to plan an execution of the guardsmen and their horses at some point? The guardsmen don’t have any way to protect themselves other than a sword. A gun goes a long distance. By the time the gun was shot, the sword would be mute. I’m really concerned for the guards and their protection.
