It's been more than six years since Rachel Brosnahan made her debut as Midge, a 1960s housewife-turned-standup-comedian on Amazon’s 'The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,' but Brosnahan remembers her first scene like it was yesterday. We asked Brosnahan to take a trip down memory lane and react to her very first scene from The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel pilot, in which Midge performs an impromptu standup routine at her wedding. “Everyone looks so young!” Brosnahan said as she watched the scene.
Brosnahan talks about what it was like working with The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel cast. She had known the actor who plays Midge’s husband Joel, Michael Zegen (Boardwalk Empire, Frances Ha), for years, and their shared history made for great chemistry and a slightly less anxiety-inducing audition process. Tony Shalhoub (Monk, The Man Who Wasn’t There), who plays Midge’s father Abe Weissman, is regarded by Brosnahan as a “national treasure.” Shalhoub is one of the actress’s all-time favorite co-stars, but she was intimated by the renowned actor when she first worked with him. Now the cast is like family to her.
Since the premiere of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel in 2017, Brosnahan has won an Emmy and two Golden Globes for her role as Midge. When asked how she thinks The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel will end, Brosnahan revealed what showrunner Amy Sherman-Palladino-who created other beloved shows like Gilmore Girls and Bunheads with her husband Dan Palladino-told her about what her plan for the end of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel looks like. “I’ve asked Amy 2,000 questions and one was, ‘Where do you see Midge ending up in the future?’” Brosnahan said. “This isn’t how the show ends, but for whatever it’s worth, what she said was she envisions Midge living in a penthouse apartment with 20 poodles one day. She’ll be wildly successful, but she’ll always look back on the day before Joel left her as the happiest day of her life.”
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is available to stream now on Amazon Prime Video.

I wasn't aware how much of an accent and "voice" Rachel is performing when she plays Midge. And all the mannerisms -- she is an amazing actress.
Exactly. Made me love her more. Her voice and her mannerisms are nothing like Midge's.
Rachel's voice is so different from Midge's.
Right she talks so much slower
I think her having a higher register works well for her that she is a comic in the show. Definitely works with the rhythm she with on stage
Her voice is so different, yet you can still see hints of Midge as she talks.
no it's the same voice
She watched the pilot and said "Who's gonna watch this"?! Girlie did we watch the same pilot, it was so great, I was instantly hooked lol She's really talented tho, the fact that she seems so different than Midge when most actors look like they're playing themselves says a lot about her talent.
This is exactly what I was thinking!!!!!
The unedited footage would be very cringe and hard to watch
"It turned out OK"... Probably one of the biggest understatements of all time.
Her reaction to watching herself is exactly how mine would be 😂
I love how different this is from all the other interviews. I'm binging all of them right now because I can't say goodbye to this show 😭
Her calling Michael a poor young man when he's older than her is so sweet 😂
This was a marvellous show. So, so, so good. Loved, loved Midge, her parents, Joel & Susie. I mean the entire cast was great. Everyone just fit so well. Well done. Wow. Unforgettable. My all time favourite show. It would be amazing to have a movie done years later to marvel us once again. Start shooting now 😉
I just recently had a chance to meet her and she is truly a caring, wonderful person. And this show has been so, lol well marvelous, I will be sad to see it go, but also thankful it was picked up in the first place.
Stunningly beautiful, AAA+ talent and a genuine person who I think is actually a great person even outside the spotlights... And what a show... one of the best in the last 20 years.
She's so funny and personable and such a talented actor that I feel bad for being so distracted by how good she looks in red...
She seems so nice ❤️ She's so beautiful and talented and definitely perfect for this role, I can't imagine another actress as Midge. What a great show!
Love this show, don’t want it to end. Writing is phenomenal, cast makes it genius give and take.
Thats what Ive missed in the last 2 seasons. The interaction between Midge and Joel
In the end, it is marvelous television! The ensemble cast really works great together. The girl who plays Suzie/Alexandrea Borstein--her agent-- is truly great, and a delight.
Maybe the greatest show in the history of television
She is such a talent. She goes topless in the pilot. She is absolutely perfect.
I think she is lovely. Loved this series. ❤️
Ok, now I love her more.
so sad the show is over :(
I love her laugh! ❤
That was a ... revealing episode :)
Her Voice is different out of character
I hate to say this but this show better have a happy ending. I really love season one, got heavily invested in Midge as a character and wanted her to succeed. Half of season 2 was good but the story plunged off a cliff from there with silly nonsense and bad writing along with drawn out plots that went nowhere or you could see the end of a mile away. With four episodes to go I really want Midge to get her MOJO back and fly. Seriously, I know it's all made up, but Rachel's acting is so good you just want better for her character than wants on offer. Again, I have never been so heavily invested in a TV show and that's my fault I know, but if I want sad I'll read a newspaper or watch the news on TV. Go Miriam 'Midge' Maisel.
I mean the flash forwards in season 4 imply that she's done pretty well for herself.
@@tatehildyard5332 Ya I don't know, she's estranged from her kids, Susie's no longer manages her and they don't talk. There's implications she's coasting in her career, hawking wigs while doing the same old bits because she's lost her edge and gone with safe stuff. I don't disagee with done well for herself, Emmy's and Grammy's, but you can tell she misses Susie and that push to always be better or as they both say in the series, tits up.
@@stevesmith8484 Based on the ending of the last episode, I’m guessing they’re going to make up in the final episode. Yeah it’s a little bit of a bummer seeing everyone else get shorted on good endings, but I also kind of appreciate the nuances of that we don’t normally see in entertainer rags to riches story. Usually they just focus on one particularly patchy part of the person’s life but once they get past that, the redemption arc is complete and it basically says everything else after that was fine. Showbiz has a way of grinding even accomplished people down, just in different ways. And considering the main template for Midge is Joan Rivers, it could have wound up a way bigger bummer.
@@tatehildyard5332 I am saving watching until the final drop, then watch all three. In the interim I've watching Good Omens.
@@stevesmith8484 Oh. My apologies for spoiling it then. A good chunk of that episode I mentioned was basically just a Susie epilogue and a lot more happens for her in it too.
good
"It's on film, and you can't change it" ... George Lucas invites you to hold his beer.
Both sets of in-law parents have become so obnoxious and unsympathetic, the writers have pushed them way too far into idiocy.
I think Abe gets a lot of redemption end of the final season
she's just been cast as Lois Lane
Rachel is a prettier Margot Kidder…
Loved that show… but they took way too long between seasons… lost interest
you're missing out tbh
@@feelingReckless13 indeed, but I've been rewatching it lately, since I immediately binged the 5th season when it came out 😂
From season 1 until 3, a season was coming out each year. Season 4 was delayed because of covid. With season 4 and 5 coming out again just a year apart. To me doesnt look too bad.
@@mcl2584 exactly
Annual seasons are pretty much standard, no? There's a ridiculous amount of work on this show, compared to most. All those carefully planned one-shots that go on forever, where they have to reset everything if anybody moves wrong or flubs a line. I don't think people appreciate how much special effects work there is, either - tons of computer graphics and matte work to create the period.
this season is soooooo bad
I disagree, some episodes are really good, and it feels just like the iconic episodes from prev seasons, some are okay tho I wouldn't rewatch them.
I love it!
clealry you have no taste whatsoever
Disagree. The flashfowards and flashbacks are genius. The only "weak" episode is the one with the garbage company performance, but the rest of them are solidly written and well acted. I think this season is on par with the rest, if not better.
@@Gruntled2001 bingo! you said it!
