Here's what some icons have to say about the book!!!
Ice-T: "Respect to Soren Baker for documenting the history of gangster rap in these pages. Some hate it. Some love it. But you can’t deny its brutal, hardcore honesty."
The D.O.C.: "History has so often been written by the victors, that you very rarely ever get the real story behind anything. So it’s really important to hear from the people that were there, which is exactly what Soren Baker shares in this book. He writes about it and he’s honest about it."
Xzibit: "Hip-hop changed the world. Gangster rap changed the narrative, and then changed the world again. Soren Baker has been a very integral part of documenting hip-hop on the West Coast for as long as I can remember. I don’t think anybody is more qualified to write this book."
Leslie “Big Lez” Segar: "Soren Baker has changed the perspective of gangster rap by putting his pen to paper. He has given hip-hop power, proven its potential, and made non-believers contemplate all of its possibilities. The truth in his writing leaves no stone unturned, something he's done again with The History of Gangster Rap. Soren doesn’t just champion hip-hop. He also reveals its flaws and its truths."

That “In The Beginning” compilation back in 1997 was all about this topic! Snoop is definitely the king of rap cover songs.

Talk about a hidden gem! I don't think it's officially out there for streaming - I've had to upload a couple of the songs onto here myself for sharing purposes, for instance - and I really think that, even when it was new, it flew under the radar. "In tha Beginning... There was Rap" is a must-have for heads.

I forgot about all those other covers he did. Two hip hop centric covers I can think of are that Straight Outta Compton Anniversary album that had tons of good covers on it. Also that In the Beginning there was Rap compilation album. Next thought goes to RUN DMC and Aerosmith covering the laters Walk this Way along with Anthrax and PE covering PE's Bring that Noise. Onyx and Biohazard re-doing the music for Onyx's Slam is cool too. Lastly , from the rock side covering rap tunes you got Rage Against the Machine's Renegades album where they cover a ton of hip hop songs from EPMD, Cypress Hill, Eric B. and Rakim... Then you have Korn's cover of Ice Cube's Wicked, Godsmack 's cover of Easy E's Boyz n tha Hood, Prophets of Rage covering Fight the Power, No Sleep Till Brooklyn, and Moma Said Knock You Out, and probably a few others I'm forgetting. I don't have a problem with covers if you put your spin on it and make it yours versus repeating what someone else did.

Vapors is my favorite of all the snoop covers. Definitely dope that he paid homage to those legends.
Snoop epitomizes hiphop in a way that many don’t, and it’s shocking to see all the disrespect the man gets anytime conversations are had regarding the greats.

A cover/homage is a lot different than using a ghostwriter, as it should be. I honestly think that there should be MORE covers, but the very culture of hip hop almost demands that you're original, which is both to its credit and to its detriment.
My favorite Snoop cover is probably "Paper'd Up," mostly covering "Paid in Full," although "Vapors" is second.
