    Interesting to watch you create different styles with cheap material ideal to improve bonsai skills for, would be good to see them trees after a few months to see how they have filled out. Thanks for doing an interesting video.

      Thanks, a lot of my viewers are worried about cutting back drastically. However, it works for me…never killed a tree because of that because the trees bounce back fast. It's all about what works for you!

    Dr Chang, I was told by a nursery man that Alberta Spruce trees have a lot of Spider Mites. How soon is soon, can’t wait for you too open your store? Thank You…….

      I will have trees to ship in the third quarter of 2024. No bonsai will be shipped until it is time ;-) They are currently growing healthily on my farm. I'll post a video soon on a giveaway where you can win some of my bonsai, so please stay tuned!
      Yes, spider mite is common problem. A diluted shot of Malathione will do the trick. Not terribly toxic. Or if you want to go organic, use mineral oil or lady bugs.

    i am based in zone 10a bay area.. but have never touched picea glauca even as garden trees . Because they are usually referred for zones 2-8 .. and we dont have enough “chill “ hours . Have you had success growing spruce in you pescadero garden which is similar zones (9-10 i guess ) ?

    • @bonsaiheirloom
      @bonsaiheirloom  7 месяцев назад +1

      Your are right. Picea likes to have cold freezing winters. So, they are grown elsewhere and shipped in. I think keeping a spruce alive for a few years in a wam climate is probably ok.

    wow 20 bucks home depot in california much higher same trees....

  • @creightonfreeman8059
    @creightonfreeman8059 7 месяцев назад +2

    I know this kind of drastic initial styling can work, but I prefer a more gradual approach because removing so much of the tree at once is a big metabolic shock to the tree and in my experience, has a much higher risk of killing the tree than reducing the tree in stages. I try to not remove more than about 30% of the tree at once.

    • @bonsaiheirloom
      @bonsaiheirloom  7 месяцев назад

      Yes, your approach is correct too. Everything is a compromise. Cutting back drastically works for me because trees bounce back quickly. You can certainly cut back a bit at a time. It's all about finding what works best for you.

  • @randysmith1723
    @randysmith1723 7 месяцев назад +2

    So I understand. You're saying that even in my Zone (Mountains of NC), it's OK to do everything at once? (Significant pruning, root removal, and repotting) At least as far as Alberta Spruce is concerned, for this time of year? Thanks for your very helpful videos!

    • @bonsaiheirloom
      @bonsaiheirloom  7 месяцев назад +1

      This is a generalization - Cut back branches to compensate for root loss so there is enough water for keeping the leaves green.
